2013 RAMADAN START 7/14/2013

Recommended Posts

When we first heard news that Iraq might come out of Chapter 7, I began to wonder if we might finally see some movement on the RV front.  Then I remembered Ramadan was coming up.

I think it is reasonable to expect they will either RV before or after, but not during, their holiest month.  I cannot even begin to imagine how much it would disrupt their holidays if we all came flooding into the country during that time. :P

I don't know why we would come flooding into their country.  I know I certainly won't be going to Iraq if it RVs.  No need to - but I might to up north later as a tourist in the Kurdish regions.  Didn't get much of a chance to see things while I was there in 04-05.  Kind of limited touring in my sector - and the HMMWV windows were kind of small....

  When is Ramadan in 2013?

Ramadan in 2013 will start on Tuesday, the 9th of July and will continue for 30 days until Wednesday, the 7th of August.

Based on sightability in North America, in 2013 Ramadan will start in North America a day later - on Wednesday, the 10th of July.

Note that in the Muslim calander, a holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day, so observing Muslims will celebrate Ramadan on the sunset of Monday, the 8th of July.

Although Ramadan is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year, since the Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar and the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar. This difference means Ramadan moves in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days every year. The date of Ramadan may also vary from country to country depending on whether the moon has been sighted or not.

The dates provided here are based on the dates adopted by the Fiqh Council of North America for the celebration of Ramadan. Note that these dates are based on astronomical calculations to affirm each date, and not on the actual sighting of the moon with the naked eyes. This approach is accepted by many, but is still being hotly debated.

Finally, someone who actually knows what they are saying!

Here's another tidbit:

Ramadan is not like our Christmas holiday. Their society does not grind to a halt for thirty calander days. Business, government as well as everyday life is conducted as usual with the added consideration of the Blessings of Allah over the last year, an emphasis of sharing ones blessings with the poor and fasting from dawn till dusk (this is the Readers Digest version).

It is entirely plausible that an RV/RD can occur during Ramadan..... I'm just sayin'.....
