Iraqi presidency denies Talabani's death: TV

English.news.cn 2012-12-18 21:23:59

BAGHDAD, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi presidency office denied reports about President Jalal Talabani's death at a hospital in the capital Baghdad on Tuesday, an official Iraqi television reported.

"The Iraqi Presidency office denied reports about the death of President Jalal Talabani," the state-run Iraqia channel said.

Earlier, some local media said that Talabani has died after fast deterioration of his health.

However, the government-owned Iraqia channel quoted Naseer al- Aani, head of the presidency office, as saying that "reports about Talabani's death are not true, and his condition is stable."

Earlier in the day, a medical source told Xinhua that Talabani was admitted to Baghdad hospital of Madinat al-Tib late Monday night and was unconscious due to stroke and was in critical condition.

An earlier statement by his office confirmed that Talabani has been admitted to a hospital in Baghdad "because of fatigue and tiredness."

Talabani, 79, has been suffering various health problems in recent years.

Iraqi president Jalal Talabani critical after brain stroke

Published: Tuesday, Dec 18, 2012, 21:15 IST

Place: Baghdad | Agency: Reuters

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, who has mediated among Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish parties, was in hospital on Tuesday after suffering a stroke that left him in "critical but stable condition", government officials and lawmakers said, even as the incident sparked off rumours of the Kurdish president's death.

Without Talabani, Iraq would lose an influential peace-maker who often eased tensions in the fragile power-sharing government and negotiated in the growing rift over oil between Baghdad and the OPEC member country's autonomous Kurdistan region. Reports on his medical condition varied.

Three government sources said he was in critical condition, but his office said the 79-year-old president was stable under intensive medical supervision after receiving treatment for blocked arteries.

"President Talabani has suffered a light stroke. His condition is stable now and doctors are closely monitoring him and if they decide he should be transferred outside then he'll go," veteran Kurdish politician Mahmoud Othman, a close Talabani associate who was in the Baghdad hospital. Talabani had been suffering from ill health much of this year and received medical treatment overseas several times in the last two years. Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki visited the hospital earlier on Tuesday.

Tough Times Ahead?

Under Iraq's constitution, the parliament should elect a new president if the post becomes vacant and Iraq's power-sharing deal calls for the presidency to go to a Kurd while two vice presidents are shared by a Sunni Muslim and a Shi'ite Muslim. Political analysts said former Kurdistan prime minister Barham Salih is favoured candidate to replace Talabani should the president be incapacitated.

But his exit from Iraqi politics would come at a sensitive time and any succession would be complicated, a year after the last American troops left the country. "He is the most moderate among Iraqi politicians and the most able to defuse political shocks. I do not think any one will be able to fill his position as a president and as a politician," Iraqi analyst Ibrahim al-Sumaidaie said.

Iraq law would see one of the vice presidents take over Talabani's duties before the parliamentary vote. But Iraq's Sunni Vice President, Tareq al-Hashemi, is a fugitive outside of the country after he fled to escape charges he ran death squads. He was sentenced to death in absentia. Any parliament vote would also be complex, with Maliki locked in a struggle with Sunni, Kurdish and some Shi'ite rivals in the power-sharing government.

Talabani was crucial in helping the Shi'ite leader survive a no-confidence motion directed against him earlier this year. Talabani also recently helped ease a military stand-off between Maliki's central government and the autonomous Kurdistan president, Masoud Barzani, in their long-running dispute over oil-field rights and internal boundaries. But that situation remains sensitive after both regions sent troops to reinforce positions along their internal frontier.

A veteran of the Kurdish guerrilla movement, Talabani survived wars, exile and infighting in northern Iraq to become the country's first Kurdish president a few years after the 2003 invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Here is a news link to CNN. At the end of the link it proves my point. Iraqi News media claimed Talabaini was in Germany for knee surgury. CNN has confimed it was SPINAL SURGURY in January of 2012. CNN is also reporting a stroke not death...

I am not saying this isnt true. I am just proceeding with caution due to the fact Iraq is infamous for conflicting reports or releasing news articles that have been a bit less than true...

Fox is not reporting that Talibani is dead...they have not and currently are not. Their ticker states he has been hospitalized due to stroke and is being treated by a medical team in Baghdad. PM maliki is at the hospital and it is undecided if treatment will continue in Baghdad or if he will be transferred to another country for treatment...

Wasn't there something going around that some leader was dead just prior

to some other country's revaluation...?

Turned out to be rumour, but the currency did do it's thing...

Can't remember which one it was....

Hope Talabani is okay.... Like we always said,

He's always the only true Gentleman in the room.

If he is back in hospital - we wish him well....

If he is no longer with us --- Peace Be Upon Him and those who love him.

Thank you SgtFuryUSCZ, you are a truly exceptional human being; after reading all posts related to Talabani and his illnes/dead, you are the only one that has put human dignity in front of the $$$$ sign. I am sorry this is happening, as Talabani was/is a true gentleman and a great President for Iraq. May God bless him and his family!

yes kuwait did say the king was dead, also alot of rumours around for dec 18/12 and even adam stated possible bingo on a date

who knows but i do hope the ride is ending <_</>

It just seems to convientent for this to happen when UNSC is releasing some type of report today. CBI has been given the green light to raise the value of the dinar, Kwait is being very flexible with Iraq and calling for their release of Ch7, HCL article 140 are coming together ect ect ect... I am very leary of news reports that come out of Iraq. However with that being said the man could have truely fallen ill. With his past current health issues a stroke would not be unrealistic... Approach this with caution and skeptisim like most every other conflicting report that come out of Iraq....
