Michigan right-to-work protests expected today at Capitol

LANSING — Large numbers of Michigan State Police officers were around the Capitol building early this morning as Lansing braced for a day of protests related to controversial right-to-work legislation working its way through the state Legislature.

Today’s protests are a precursor to much larger ones planned for Tuesday, when thousands of union activists are expected to converge at the Capitol and supporters of right-to-work legislation have also promised a strong presence there. Union members took civil disobedience training in Detroit on Saturday to prepare for the protests.

Parking meters along Capitol Avenue had bags over them today to prevent on-street parking, and the city of Lansing has announced street closures around the Capitol for Tuesday.

The grounds of the Capitol were empty shortly after 7 a.m., today, but that was expected to change this morning.

The Michigan Nurses Association announced a 10:30 a.m. demonstration at which some of its members will appear on the Capitol steps with duct tape over their mouths.

“This politically motivated legislation will only give corporations and CEOs more power to silence workers, including nurses,” spokeswoman Dawn Kettinger said in a news release.

The Michigan Laborers are among the unions also expected to have a presence at the Capitol today, as they demonstrate and lobby lawmakers.

Right-to-work legislation makes it illegal to require financial support of a union as a condition of employment.

Gov. Rick Snyder, who since taking office in January 2011 insisted right-to-work legislation was too divisive and not on his agenda, set off a political firestorm Thursday when he announced legislation would be introduced in the Republican-controlled Legislature and he would sign it when it reached his desk.

There were eight arrests at the Capitol Thursday after demonstrators tried to rush on the Senate floor and state police sealed the doors to the Capitol for several hours, saying the move was needed to control crowds and assure public safety. The doors were reopened in response to a court order.

A total of three right-to-work bills received partial approval Thursday, with one passing the House and two passing the Senate. The Legislature could send the right-to-work package to Snyder as early as Tuesday, when the state House is scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. The Legislature doesn't return to session until tomorrow. It's possible that procedural moves on either side if the political isle could push the vote in the controversial legislation to Wednesday.

Late Sunday, the state police said they would be strictly enforcing rules related to the use of Capitol facilities this week.

Signs, amplifying equipment and noise-makers such as whistles are banned inside the Capitol, the department said in a news release.

“Camping or sleeping overnight on the Capitol grounds is not allowed. Sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, and similar bedding items will not be permitted in the Capitol building.”

In February and March of 2011, union activists occupied the Capitol building in Wisconsin after Gov. Scott Walker announced plans to strip public employees of collective bargaining rights.

The state police also said “packages and briefcases suspected of concealing stolen items or contraband may be inspected if suspected to be capable of destructive or disruptive use within the buildin

So Big unions are running scared and if they cant get their way by vote they will try strong arm tactic`s. Their new flag they are flying is this. But I say it should look more like this.

Yeah well those big union bosses aren't exactly poor folk are they. When it takes $20 to make a 10 cent nail eventually the nail maker either re-locates where its cheaper to make a nail or go`s broke. All you have to do is look at the wonderful job the unions have done with the auto industry to see that big unions lose jobs and manufacturing.

Michigan, especially Southeast Michigan, needs this Right to Work law very badly.....Detroit used to have a population of 1.2 million people.........today there are less than 700,000.......much of the auto industry has left.......along with many of the businesses that worked in support of these Auto Companies..........The Unions priced themselves out of jobs.....and jobs were moved........Other Industry has had no interest to move into Detroit, and area, because of the Unions.......These are just the facts.........A once proud Detroit is now a shell of what it once was.......hopefully the Right to Work Act will encourage new business back into the city.... My Friend Umbertino,

It is only logical for President Obama to express his thoughts this way........The Unions helped him in the past 2 elections so he owes them.....reality is...look at what Detroit has become......

and yes.....the whole country has suffered.....but not like Detroit and the SE part of Michigan........the difference between the rest of the country and Detroit..........The Unions......

What are the unions complaining about? They are only getting what they have worked hard to create. They have spent billions of dues to promote political agendas. If a person did not support their politican mindset they money still went to support their individual for office. This way a worker does not have to support a political agenda in order to work.

I say an eye for an eye. You have Soros who bankrolls just about every marxist .org and is also a union backer. The bottom line is the people of Michigan had spoken. They wanted to get rid of "Right to Work Laws" and they did when they voted in a Republican governor and legislature. Where do you see the unfareness?

I love watching these marxist goons act like cry babies. :D/>

Twenty dollars to make a 10 cent nail? Please provide proof of your claim. When you say "wonderful jobs the union have done" do you mean a middle class living, pension, affordable health care?

Right To Work, works in Texas. just sayin'.

Really???

This is just ignorant. Do you even live in Michigan?? Do you have any proof of Soros activity in Michigan? They wanted to "get rid of right to work laws"? The republican governor and legislature pushed this "right to freeload" legislation!!! Do you even know what you're talking about?? The people of Michigan NEVER had an opportunity to speak out on this legislation. It was pushed through without ANY committee discussion or public input. By the admission of the governor, this legislation was done in retaliation for a ballot initiative to keep collective bargaining in Michigan's constitution. At least the supporters of that proposal had the guts to let the people decide. The republican cowards in the legislature of the State of Michigan wouldn't let the people decide, because they knew they would probably lose. Instead they made it law, and included an appropriation to make sure the people couldn't decide in a referendum. Typical of the beady eyed rats that they are.

Ortho...?

Someone has to help the people of Michigan and their economy,...even if they are politicians who take the lead. The people of Michigan elected those leaders (rats as u say),..just like the rest of us have to put up with O. How in a free democracy should a person be forced to join anything,..union, church,....whatever, in order to have job to "provide for their family"?? Just not right. Michiganders want to bring it to a statewide vote?...they know how to do that...."if" they believe its just and "if" they believe the majority will support it. Currently it looks like the out of state union activist are the real opposition,...not the majority of the people of Michigan.

But please, don't miss the GREATEST POINTS made: 1. Every American should be free to see employment with or without a union.

#2. So many states are Right To Work states and their economies are doing so much better. They are recovering, all be it slowly. I know the people in those 24 states are wishing the VERY BEST for Michigan and its hopes for a recovering economy. I live in a Right To Work state,..wouldn't consider any where that I could be "required" to join a union to have a job. Right To Work,..Try It You'll Like It.

Unions have committed suicide with their pass the cost on to the consumer mentality.

They have made it unaffordable for anyone to purchase union made.

When they retire they don't even stay in their union controlled states do they.

They move to right to work states so they don't have to pay the prices they themselves demanded.

That in it's self tells the real story.

No Surrender No Retreat and No Compromise

My friend ever heard of moveon.org. This Soros marxist organization has backed every union rally/protest including this one. Just do your home work and don't rely on your marxists buddies for information. The unions have shot themselves in the foot again. This time the bleeding will continue.

Well I do live in Mich.

#1 Only 1 out of every 5 people asked are for the unions.

#2 Only 16% of the jobs in Mich are union labor . They just happen to be big ones because that's where the money is for fat A$$ union bosses

#3 The Union boss`s brought this on themselves. The Gov of Mich made a deal with the unions prior to the election. That they (the unions) would forget about Proposal 2 which would actually change the state constitution in regards to collective bargaining and in return he would not pursue making Mich a right to work state. As usual with big union bosses they had no intentions of keeping their word and proposal 2 wound up on the ballot. It was voted down by we the people. The same way you the people voted in Mr Obama. Well since the union proved their word was crap. OUR Governor did exactly what he said he would do and brought Mich in as a Right to work state. Now all hells breaking loose cause sour grapes don't taste good.

and by the way the 10 cent nail story cannot be proved cause it was a metaphor which you obviously don't have the smarts to understand.

THE PEOPLE OF MICHIGAN HAS SPOKEN.

Well said! From a fellow Michigander that is exactly the way I took all this myself. Thank you Gov. Snyder.

First of all I am NOT ignorant and do not appreciate you arrogance. Secondly when I was working I could not care less what my employer did or supported because it was NOT my money. When I was paying union dues it WAS my money. I was paying them to support ME, not a politician. Lastly, if this was JUST a Michigan issue then why are unions being bussed in from outside the State? Being from coal country I support what unions CAN do but oppose what many of the mega unions ARE doing. Many of the mega unions have lost thier sight of the people and have been overdosing on power and money. They demand things that DO close small businesses. Having been a small business owner I remember how tight things are especially when starting up. You do not have the money to make things perfect for your employees. I know of a number of small businesses driven out of business by the union demands. Maybe it is time that the mega unions broke up to smaller unions so that they could get back to actually caring about the people.
