Why Romney’s slipping in polls

September 18 2012

With less than seven weeks to Election Day, the American people are turning their attention to the presidential race. Polls say President Barack Obama has an advantage - in fact, some separation - over GOP nominee Mitt Romney nationally and in some critical battleground states - notably Florida, Virginia and Ohio.

How do we account for this? First is the contrast in the two parties' conventions. According to many nonpartisan pundits, the Republican convention was a "flop," whereas the Democratic Party convention succeeded in energizing its base and presenting an appealing message to undecided voters.

Then there is the contrast in campaigns. Even Republican strategists are shaking their heads at the reoccurring missteps of the Romney campaign. Meanwhile the Obama team seems to be making all the right moves, beginning with their success in defining Romney over the summer and then at the convention as being out of touch with the "middle class."

Moreover, one can only think that this image will only grow with the surfacing this week of the Mother Jones video that has Romney (ala Russ Limbaugh) telling a group of wealthy Republicans that 47 percent of the people are on some form of government dole, pay no taxes and take no responsibility for their lives.

Another factor in Romney's growing unpopularity is that he is tacking in an extremist direction. The conventional wisdom was that upon securing the nomination he would move to the center, but there are few signs of that so far. In not doing so, his campaign is alienating broad constituencies - union members, people of color, women, youth, seniors, gays, disabled, veterans, etc.

Romney's lack of a persuasive economic recovery plan also has hurt him in the polls. The expectation was that he would unveil a recovery plan in his acceptance speech at the Republican Party convention. What better place! But he came up empty, except for a few right-wing bromides like cutting taxes on businesses and the 1 percent.

As a result, Romney's advantage in public opinion polls over Obama over the handling of the economy has virtually disappeared. This is a major shift in popular thinking.

Still another factor that accounts for Romney's slippage is that he hasn't given people the sense that he is a steady leader in difficult times. Nowhere was this more evident than last week when the U.S. consulate in Libya was attacked and four Americans were killed. Before the dust had settled and the facts were in, he chided the president for his handling of this heinous attack. His rhetorical, and as it turned out groundless, shot from the hip at the president surprised nearly all, but his most zealous supporters and the Fox News team.

Indeed, people and pundits felt that his criticism was very unpresidential and amateurish; even some of Romney's supporters were turned off by remarks that were transparently self-serving.

Despite this criticism, Romney along with the right-wing media doubled down on their tirade against the president. Not only did the president supposedly botch the response to the attack on the consulate, they said, but the protests in the Muslim countries reveal that the president in foreign policy matters "leads from behind," that he unnecessarily apologizes for the U.S. role in world affairs, that he throws reliable allies like Israel under the bus and that he makes good speeches, but practices bad policy.

And joining Romney and gang (perhaps with a little more subtlety, but every bit as irresponsible and adventurist) was Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who is itching to go to war with Iran. (Perhaps to boost his sagging poll numbers in Israel.)

I seriously doubt that this desperate gambit by Romney will resonate well with the electorate however. The American people aren't looking for a more muscular foreign policy in the Middle East from their next president. Their memories aren't so short that they have forgot about the cost in blood and treasure of our misadventures in Iraq and Afghanistan. They correctly suspect that a war against Iran would not only enflame the entire region, but lock us into an untenable and costly situation in the Middle East for a long time to come. If anything they look with suspicion on any candidate who cynically plays with American lives for political advantage in an election campaign.

None of this bodes well for Romney and the Republicans. Their path to victory in November is more difficult now. For Obama and his supporters, on the other hand, the recent turn in public opinion is cause for cautious optimism, although no one will express that in words, probably for good reason.

For they realize that much can happen over the next seven weeks that could have an impact on the outcome of the race - nothing more so than the systematic attempt by the Republican Party and its supporters to suppress the vote.

It is this palpable reality that is driving the supporters of the president to turn out record numbers and guarantee every vote is counted on Election Day.

I"d just love to know who they are taking these polls with the fact that the 47% who are on the govt. pay rolls most likely

will vote for Obama cause they think this guy is the real deal, since sliced bread was invented. Why in the world

can"t people see whats going on, they evidently just live for today and tomorrow will take care of it-self,especially the

young crowd 18- 30, all I can say is the people that vote for this guy sure ain"t thinking about their future!!

Polls are a joke. Kinda like 100 out of 100 people polled agree schools shouldn't have classes on Fridays. (Because the only people polled were the students) Hmmm easy to spin that one. Or how about 98 out of 100 people disagree that they should have to pay taxes! (When you poll a slum area) Yep that sure tells me what the country is thinking!

So tell me how can a poll of 100 people, or a 1,000, or 10,000, or even 1 million people possibly shed light on the thoughts of a country with a population of over 314,000,000? Oh, that's right it can't. I have yet to be polled on anything political this year. It's a giant load of BS so the media has something to talk about. So even if they polled 1,000,000 people that would show you what 1 out of every 314 were thinking, still not even close to accurate. I'll take my chances on an RV before Christmas vs listening to what the polls are saying.

Personally I think Mitt is going to stomp a mud hole a mile wide in O and walk it dry, beat down city!!!! :D :D :D

Here is the short bio for Sam Webb, the writer of the article. After reading the bio it is understandable that it is bias toward the Obama agenda: socialism.

Sam Webb is the national chairperson of the Communist Party, USA, a position to which he was elected in 2000 and then reelected in 2001 and 2005. From 1977 through 1988 he was the state organizer of the Communist Party in Michigan. Earlier, he was active in the labor movement in his home state of Maine.

He is a public spokesperson for the CPUSA, and travels extensively in the U.S. and abroad, including recent trips to South Africa, China, Vietnam, and Cuba where he met with leaders of those countries.

Webb currently resides in New York City, graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia and received his MA in economics from the University of Connecticut.

Now, go to his website (http://www.peopleswo...pping-in-polls/) and look at the titles of his articles which are listed. Tells you a great deal about the bias of this writer. Don't expect a balanced presentation, its not in his political DNA.

Maverick - It really does not matter who takes the polls. The important information was that Romney said it and that means it is so!

He has said he does not pay attention to the fact finders, so how can he be wrong? I happen to be a member of the 47%. Just to set the record straight, I started working at age 12 (and have one of the smallest social security numbers around to prove it) and have paid into the "system" until I retired at age 75. You are correct. I do not pay taxes. Sorry guys and gals, that is the way it is. I do collect my social security checks and spend practically every cent of it.

Both my husband and I worked and saved and yes, Mr. Romney thought we were being responsible. Then 911 took over and with it, we lost savings. (Not whining about that - stuff happens). Then illness struck and because my husband had worked overseas he had no insurance. Therefore, with no previous insurance, he was uninsurable. Those of you in the same situation, know how fast that wipes out any and all savings. Now I am delighted that I have a "fall-back" situation i.e. I can live on my social security money. By the way, my husband died before he could collect on the funds he paid in. Am I a victim? I do not think so. I think I am very blessed to be alive and able to make ends meet so far.

No one can argue with that Blondie121. Some people don't realize their blessings or the blessings/tribulations of others. You explained your situation quite well. You're NOT a victim of the system; just as Romney take advantage of legal tax havens, you're operating in what the system has provided.

BTW: As far as we know Romney didn't always pay taxes.

God Bless

Are you calling her a liar? Ask TexasGranny the circumstances in whether taxes are paid or not.

Some people have to pay federal income taxes on their Social Security benefits. This usually happens only if you have other substantial income (such as wages, self-employment, interest, dividends and other taxable income that must be reported on your tax return) in addition to your benefits.

No one pays federal income tax on more than 85 percent of his or her Social Security benefits based on Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules.

Umbertino What is your agenda? You keep bringing these anti Romney articles in here for what purpose? Don't you live in Italy? Don't tell me Obama has found a way to give our money directly to foreign citizens to trash the opposition. wink.gif

Umbertino's agenda? IMO, to obtain the title of Troll.

You are right, Lutie. Umberino is Italian and lives in Italy. And he insists on trying to interfere in our elections. He once said he is a communist, so I can only surmise he is trying to encourage those of us who are Americans to vote for Obama because his socialist values are much like Umbertino's own.

Blondie,

Nobody - NOBODY - considers you to be taking a handout. Social Security recipients are NOT (and should not) be lumped in with the 47% because THAT'S YOUR MONEY! You payed into the system all your working life and it is owed to you - a promise kept. Bless your heart....if you've been made to feel like you're getting something for nothing and that you're resented for it....please know that that is not the case. Our outrage is reserved for the takers....those that feel they are owed something that they did not earn from those that did. See the difference?

The 47% is Romney's synopsis, not all conservatives. Romney is running for president. He characterized the 47% as one people; one people that he can't reach or help. But now his tune has changed - again - so he's now for all people. Nevermind his 49 minute speech to the elite about the 47%, his regards about Israel and ME, attempt to take advantage of a hostile situation as it arrives and the many other things - off the cuff.

Just my thoughts, Romney was just making a statement and it depends if you can think out side the box, he was making a point that Obama wants the USA to be Dependant on welfare and food stamps, a welfare state so to speak and that 47% was on some sort of Gov pay plan. Not lashing out at the elderly or the poor but to make a point that if your out of work and you get gov assistance most people get so use to it they don't want to give it up, so there for that portion of folks would vote for Obama even tho he is a do nothing President. END OF STORY open your minds folks he wants a socialist country and for the USA to be week and the middle east to be the super powers of the world.

Have you heard all 49 minutes? And you're right on your comment. The rest of the tape maybe more damaging.
