TSA detains Sen. Rand Paul in Nashville

January 23, 2012

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul’s press secretary Moira Bagley tweeted on Monday that Transportation Security Administration officials were detaining her boss in Nashville, Tenn.

“Just got a call from @senrandpaul,” Bagley tweeted at about 10 a.m. on Monday. “He’s currently being detained by TSA in Nashville.”

Texas Congressman and current Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul – Sen. Rand Paul’s father – placed a post on Facebook about the news as well. “My son Rand is currently being detained by the TSA at the Nashville Airport,” Ron Paul posted. “I’ll share more details as the situation unfolds.”

Ron Paul adds, via Twitter, that the TSA detained his son “for refusing full body pat-down after anomaly in body scanner.”

Sen. Rand Paul’s Facebook page has a post about the incident too. “Senator Paul is being detained at the Nashville Airport by the TSA,” Sen. Rand Paul’s Facebook post reads. “We will update you as the situation develops.”

Sen. Rand Paul’s chief of staff Doug Stafford told The Daily Caller the Senator “was detained by the TSA after their scanner had an ‘anomaly’ on the first scan.”

“He offered to go through again,” Stafford said in an email. “The TSA said he could only have a full body pat down. He would not consent to it. He offered to go through the scanner again. The situation is ongoing.”

The TSA and the CTSA are a bunch of friggin idiots. Most of these people use to be guarding kiddy rides at some county fair. They've become rather anoying as they push their union crap as well. Nothing but a bunch of high school drop outs!

Good job TSA He is no better then anyone else hold him until he does the pat down

Well well Mr. Politician........If this is what I gotta put up with then so does Sen. Paul. Welcome to the life of all us normal citizens who have no choice but to go along or get arrested.

Why is it that politicians think they are above the laws they write and then support if they are not gonna abide by them? I don't know the answers but I really hate examples like this that clearly shows this politician is suffering from a sense of entitlement due to his lofty politicial title. Yes I even read where he is against this as one of his principles and actually I agree with him but I have no such ability to defend my principles as TSA doesn't care about my principles. They tell me to jump and I say HOW HIGH? Sen. Paul doesn't seem to appreciate my predicament as much as I do as he has the ability to protest and has . Yes he is being detained and inconvienienced but if this were just a little guy he would be booked and transported most likely. In the end the Senator will walk off from here with a little deference to his office...........................= Unfair and unequal treatment under the Law.

I am also aware that Sen. Paul was not in office when the Patriot Act was passed but it was passed and is the law of the land and all citizens are subject to it .............like or not. However on another note...I hope he complains so much that he can get changes to the issue.......Bash if you must iI's only my opinion.

uh... sorry to rain on your rant, but the Senator offered to go through the scanner again.

I don't blame him for not wanting some jerk to grope at him, I wouldn't put up with it either.

Now, if the Senator refused to go through the scanner also then you would have something to scream about, but all you are saying is you agree with the gestapo tactics of TSA.

The whole thing was a set up to deprive us of our liberty and has nothing to do with terrorists.

Aren't you tired of the illegal and unconstitutional treatment yet?

Brainwashing aside, it doesn't make us any "safer" than we were before.

White House sides with TSA in Rand Paul standoff

By Keith Laing and Amie Parnes - 01/23/12 01:24 PM ET

The White House is standing by the Transportation Security Administration in its standoff with Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and his father, Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas).

The elder Paul called the TSA a "police state" Monday after Rand Paul was reportedly detained by TSA after he refused to take a pat-down from TSA officials at the Nashville International Airport.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday that he didn't have any reaction to Paul's "police state" comments.

But Carney sided with the TSA saying, "I think it is absolutely essential that we take necessary actions to ensure that air travel is safe."

Ron Paul, who is one of four remaining Republican candidates for president, disagreed Monday afternoon. Paul said after he confirmed the incident involving Rand Paul on his Twitter page that it showed why the TSA should be eliminated.

"The police state in this country is growing out of control," the elder Paul said in a statement released by his presidential campaign.

"One of the ultimate embodiments of this is the TSA that gropes and grabs our children, our seniors, and our loved ones and neighbors with disabilities," he continued. "The TSA does all of this while doing nothing to keep us safe. That is why my ‘Plan to Restore America,’ in additional to cutting $1 trillion dollars in federal spending in one year, eliminates the TSA."

TSA has defended its treatment of Rand Paul, saying that its employees in Nashville followed its normal procedure with the senator, who has often sharply criticized the agency's pat-downs before he refused one Monday morning.

"When an irregularity is found during the TSA screening process, it must be resolved prior to allowing a passenger to proceed to the secure area of the airport," the agency said Monday in a written statement. "Passengers who refuse to complete the screening process cannot be granted access to the secure area in order to ensure the safety of others traveling."

U.S. security officials denied that Rand Paul was held by the agency. Instead, they said the senator was escorted out of the security area after his refusal to accept a pat-down after his trip through one of the agency's X-ray machines caused issues.

Both Pauls have been vocal critics of the TSA, calling for the controversial agency to be disbanded.

TSA said in a statement that "the passenger," Rand Paul, "has since rebooked on another flight and was rescreened without incident."
