House Kills SOPA

In a surprise move today, Representative Eric Cantor(R-VA) announced that he will stop all action on SOPA, effectively killing the bill. This move was most likely due to several things. One of those things is that SOPA and PIPA met huge online protest against the bills. Another reason would be that the White House threatened to veto the bill if it had passed. However, it isn't quite time yet to celebrate, as PIPA(the Senate's version of SOPA) is still up for consideration.

The online protests about the bill were surprising and large. They ranged anywhere from callng Representatives, companies, and senators to get them to change their mind, to actively moving domain's away from and targeting the business model of the companies that supported/lobbied for the bill. GoDaddy lost well over 100,000 domains in the space of about 10 days due to their involvement with these bills, along with other various targets. Reddit in particular has been influential in turning the tide against SOPA and PIPA, and is a good demonstration of how the Internet enables Democracy.

PIPA is less well known than SOPA, but the provisions are basicly the same. It still includes the same DNS blocking and censoring system that the original SOPA did, just without the SOPA name. There are around 40 co-sponsors of the bill in the Senate so far, with no word on how many senators support the bill in addition to that. There will most likely need to be 60 votes in the Senate in order to invoke cloture and end an almost guaranteed filibuster.

Wow democracy in action now we need to flood all the congressional offices with email and phone calls to tell them we are sick and tired of them not doing their jobs as the Constitution says. Come on think about this let it touch your heart don't you want to play a part in getting this nation back to greatness. Come on everyone if you can do it for this you can let your voice be heard again. NOW THATS TRULY DEMOCRACY in action.

Your Conservative House started the bill in the first place. Good thing we have people that are aware of what is going on and mad their voices heard.

To be fair and accurate these bills were started by both sides.

PIPA was introduced by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) in the Senate.

SOPA was introduced by Lamar Smith (R-Tx) in the House.

Congress Started Caring More About Corporate Interests than Free Speech.

Unfortunately other reports are stating that the bill has basically been shelved until they can come to an consensus on the issue. It's expected that a consensus would likely never occur, but the bill is technically not dead.

Correct. It's a bill that would take liberties away from the people, and there will ALWAYS be people who want that power... until the country and world realize that big government is bad, these things wil always be a looming threat.

But, for now... this is not a victory, but we live to fight another day. That's better than nothing.

It is better than nothing. But what I am hoping for is that they are not simply shelving it until after the Nov. 6th elections this year are over and then try to push full steam ahead before the 112th session of Congress ends.
