Acting US Defense Secretary Christopher Miller has ordered the suspension of cooperation at the Pentagon level with President-elect Joe Biden's transition team, in a decision "shocking officials in the Department of Defense," as the US website Axios quoted senior officials as saying.
The same source said that Miller, who was appointed on November 9, when Trump fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper immediately after the elections, gave an order Thursday night to officials at the Defense Ministry headquarters to cancel the scheduled transition meetings.
But a senior official in the Ministry of Defense played down the importance of this step, describing it as "a slight delay for the few remaining scheduled meetings until after the new year."
"We had less than twenty meetings remaining in the schedule today and next week," the official said, adding that "Defense Ministry employees who participate in the meetings have other concerns."
He added that these officials "needed to carry out their daily duties and the transitional activities consumed them ... (...) but we are still committed to a fruitful transition process."
