From "Darwin!" 1972 Saw them twice in concert.......Very very good...One of their secret is the Nocenzi Bros....Both keyboardists Album lineup: - Francesco Di Giacomo-RIP / lead vocals - Marcello Todaro / electric & acoustic guitars - Vittorio Nocenzi / Hammond organ, Moog synthesizers, harpsichord, vocals - Gianni Nocenzi / piano, E-flat clarinet - Renato D'Angelo / bass, double bass - Pier Luigi Calderoni / drums, timpani Review by loserboy PROG REVIEWER A great epic journey by this well respected legendary Italian progressive rock. "Darwin" was BANCO's 2nd release and is certainly one of their most complete works of art. "Darwin" is a very expressive album and offers a wide range of tones and moods with a superb blend of classical and progressive chamber rock. "Darwin" is a heavy theatrical production which comes across as a great concept-like piece of art. Loads of great keyboard work here as you would expect and songs are exceptionally well pieced together. I love the inter-exchange of the rock ideals with the classical style BANCO mix here. Oboes, clarinet and harpicords get interwoven with synths, piano and electric guitar. The CD re-mastered version is exceptional and offers grand sound reproduction. This is a real treasure for those lovers of Italian prog rock and is also a great place to start for the young at heart

And though I do so somewhat reluctantly, I do so in good conscience, for two specific reasons: its very early entry into the prog "catalogue," and the sheer amount of creativity being attempted (if not always successfully). Re "early entry," it is important to keep in mind that an album is actually written about a year before it appears. Thus, the 1972 appearance of this album (contemporaneous with Foxtrot, Three Friends, Fragile, Thick as a Brick and Trilogy, among others) means it was actually written prior to those albums - i.e., around the same time as Trespass, Acquiring the Taste, The Yes Album, Atom Heart Mother and ELP. Given this - and although the band "wears its influences on its sleeve" much of the time (i.e., it does not always successfully filter those influences into something new or compelling) - there is no question that the band is reaching for something, and very nearly achieves it. [N.B. Those influences primarily include ELP, Gentle Giant and a little bit of Yes. Given this, one could take the position that the very fact that it was those three groups that influenced IBDB is a positive sign - and I would agree.] / "Bronze Ballet" is the name of the group, but it might just as well serve as the title of this album, since the compositional quality is mildly theatrical, in the sense of a ballet or musical. The Introduzione, like the prelude of a theatrical musical, is lengthy, and states a number of "themes" which are then exposited more "fully" (at least, that seems to have been the intention...) in the three "incontros" (songs). The "Epilogo" (ending) then ties things together. I was particularly impressed with the musicianship, which is remarkable for that time. I also liked the vocals, which is not always the case with Italian (or other non-english European) prog. / As noted, the album as a whole has a lot of good ideas, but, also as noted, too few are expressed as well as they might be. The album would also have benefitted from more "incontros," since it seems somewhat "sparse" with only three - especially given that one of them does little but repeat part of the Introduzione. Still, as noted, they are clearly trying very hard, and the album is extremely listenable. Thus, although I cannot in good conscience give the album four stars, the band deserves an additional "E" for effort.

NOT meaning people politically on the right...Just to be clear In the translation I do realize it's very difficult for non-Italians to get the sense of some typical Italian expressions which is really complicated to render in the Anglo-American culture ( and consequentely in translation)...As some lines are typical of Italian culture and way of living...So some stuff may sound real weird and/or absurd to other cultures and it'd get too long to try and explain everything behind the meaning....Sorry about that They're all around us, among us, in many cases we are the ones making promises that we never keep, unless for selfish reasons. The only end is usefulness, the means are every possibility, the stakes as high as can be, and winning is an imperative - and don't give anybody else a chance to participate. In the logic of this game, the only rule is being shrewd: no scruples, no respect for others because the last ones will remain the last if the first are inaccessible. They are many of them, arrogant with the weakest, servile with the powerful, they are replicants (1), they are all identical, look at them: they hide behind masks and they're indistinguishable. They climb upwards like lizards, and if they lose their tail, they buy a new one. They do what they want so that people will know what they've done: they spend money, spread money, they are what they own.... Chorus: They are all around me, but they don't speak to me....
