  1. Within a year ... Gulf electricity is "free" to Iraq 2020-08-24 01:28 Shafaq News / The Iraqi ambassador in Riyadh, Qahtan Al-Janabi revealed, on Sunday, that the Gulf interconnection will completely solve the problem of electricity in Iraq. Al-Janabi said in a press statement today, which was seen by Shafaq News Agency, that "there is a memorandum of understanding signed between the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, for the purpose of linking the Gulf through Kuwait," indicating that "there is a clear development in this issue and the initiation of this work." very soon". He added, "It is hoped that it will be completed within a year to solve the electricity crisis in Iraq, given that the six Gulf countries have abundant electric power, and the peak hours in them differ from what is in Iraq." Al-Janabi explained that "through this link, Iraq will not pay any sums. Rather, its financing will be from the outputs of the Kuwait Conference for the Reconstruction of Iraq, which was held years ago." The American "Wall Street Journal" reported, in a report today, Monday, that the United States is pushing for a new Saudi-Iraqi project to invest in energy, noting that it is "towards completion ." And Washington had granted Iraq an exemption from the sanctions imposed on importing Iranian energy, for humanitarian reasons related to plunging Baghdad into darkness without this energy, at a time when Iraq is trying to reduce its dependence on Tehran. The networking project has been the subject of intense consultations in recent months, as it was discussed during the visit of the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kazemi to Washington last week . The Iraqi Finance Minister, Ali Allawi, said last Friday that the project "is about to be defined, designed and put up for tenders," adding, "The electrical network in Iraq is likely to be linked to the networks of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait ." On the other hand, a spokesman for the Saudi Energy Minister confirmed that the agreement "is progressing towards completion" and includes an option for a direct link between Iraq and Saudi Arabia . "We were working on this," says a senior Trump administration official, referring to the Iraqi electricity grid connected to the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
  2. Qatar Fund for Development signs an agreement to connect the Gulf electrical grid to the southern Iraq network A photo during the signing of the agreement, published by the Fund on its Twitter account August 01 2022 04:29 PM Doha-Mubasher: Qatar Fund for Development and the Electricity Interconnection Authority of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf announced today, Monday, the signing of an agreement to develop the Gulf electric interconnection system and connect to the southern Iraq network . The agreement aims to contribute to meeting part of the demand for electrical energy and filling the need for it, in addition to improving the performance and stability of the electrical network in the southern region of the Republic of Iraq. According to the terms of the agreement, it is planned to construct a new 400-kilovolt transformer station from the Al-Wafra station of the Interconnection Authority to the Al-Faw power transfer station in southern Iraq, which will enable the transmission of electricity from the countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf to Iraq . The Director General of the Qatar Fund for Development, Khalifa bin Jassim Al-Kuwari, stressed that the extension of electricity plays a fundamental and pivotal role in strengthening the vital basic sectors and supporting them to complete their work, as well as the pivotal role of the initiative in economic contribution and infrastructure development. In the same context, the CEO of the Gulf Electricity Interconnection Authority, Engineer Ahmed bin Ali Al-Ibrahim, affirmed that the electrical interconnection has achieved economic savings for the GCC countries, which amounted to nearly $3 billion since the project was fully operational. He said that the authority has worked to avoid any major interruptions in the Gulf networks since the start of operation in 2009, which had a significant impact on the continuity of electricity and its significant impact on society and the economic and industrial sector in the countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf . It is noteworthy that the GCC Electricity Interconnection Authority is implementing the project and owns and operates the Gulf Electricity Interconnection Network, which is one of the most important infrastructure interconnection projects approved by the Cooperation Council. In 2001, the GCC Electricity Interconnection Authority was established, and the interconnection project was completed in 2009, when the interconnection network began operating . The authority considers that the signing of the interconnection agreement with the electricity network in southern Iraq, which recently coincided with the Jeddah Summit for Security and Development, which was held on July 15, is one of the most important strategic projects for the countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, and implementation work is scheduled to begin during the month of August. The connection will be operational in the summer of 2024 . It is worth noting that the Gulf Electricity Interconnection Project achieved its most important strategic objectives of enhancing energy security, raising the level of reliability and safety of the Gulf electrical systems, and its success in avoiding the GCC electricity networks for any partial or total interruption by 100% by providing instant support by transferring the required energy via The electrical interconnection network directly, where more than (2500) support cases have been supported since its operation .
