  11. Dramatic shift in the Turkish position due to internal protests on government inaction and support for regional fight against Isis Martin Chulov in Beirut, Constanze Letsch in Istanbul, and Fazel Hawramy in Irbil The Guardian, Monday 20 October 2014 13.33 EDT Turkey will allow Kurdish peshmerga forces from northern Iraq across its territory to defend Kurds in the besieged Syrian border town of Kobani, in a move that fighters say could tip a month-long battle against Islamic State (Isis) insurgents in their favour. The announcement marked an abrupt shift from Ankara’s position of refusing to militarily help the Kurds of Kobani and came hours after the US military dropped 24 tonnes of weapons and medicines in the first supply run it had made to the besieged town in nearly five weeks of fighting. Both developments followed a substantial increase in the number of air strikes against Isis forces, which Kurdish militia members inside Syria and exiled residents of Kobani say are steadily turning the tide of the battle. Guided in by special forces and by Kurdish spotters operating deep inside the war-ravaged town just south of the Turkish border, the air strikes are believed to have decimated the Isis command in recent days, forcing it to use an increasing number of untested cadres who are struggling to hold ground. The jihadi group has paid an increasingly heavy price in the fight for Kobani, losing an estimated 400 men and many of the heavy weapons it had brought to the battle from a stockpile it had looted in northern Iraq. “It is being much more difficult for them,” said a western diplomat based in the region. “If what has been delivered can make a measurable difference then they can’t win. They will need to recalibrate their commitment.” The state of the battlefield is now markedly different than late last week, before the increase in strikes, when Isis forces were advancing despite the presence of US and coalition jets and seemed poised to overrun Kobani, the fourth-largest Kurdish town in Syria. Such a victory would have been a significant boost for Isis, proving it could prevail over the US and its Arab partners as it continued on its rampage through the centre of the region. The jihadis’ gains had been made while Turkey refused to support the fighters inside Kobani, because of their links to the PKK, which has been fighting an insurgency against the Turkish government for nearly 40 years. Kurdish fighters contacted by the Guardian say the weapons drops have boosted morale and, if continued, will help them hold back the Isis onslaught. “The weapons aren’t enough to change the game in one night,” said Sores Hassan, a spokesman for the YPG militia, which is fighting in Kobani. “But if the aid is continued, it will help us a lot. This support is helping us morally and lifting our spirits more than really helping us on the ground. We are talking to the coalition through different channels to continue the support and we hope it will happen more often.” Another fighter, who identified himself as Ameen, said: “The game has changed now. After the Americans provided us with weapons, we turned from defending the city to attacking Isis. Now we are no longer playing the defensive in this war. I believe the next couple of days will bring us victory. “In the first week of the air strikes, the Americans were bombing empty Isis headquarters. Now, it is different. They are more accurate and they know the right places to bomb.” Mahmoud Haji Omar, a member of the peshmerga committee in the Kurdistan parliament, confirmed that peshmerga troops were preparing to deploy to Kobani: “We are planning to send a number of peshmerga forces to go and fight in Kobani against (Isis). We are currently selecting the fighters that will be going to Kobani. Turkey has agreed to give passage as long as the peshmerga fighters bring back the weapons that they take in to Kobani.” Earlier, US secretary of state John Kerry said the Obama administration decided to airdrop weapons and ammunitions to “valiant” Kurds because it would be “irresponsible” and “morally very difficult” not to support them. Kerry told reporters in the Indonesian capital Jakarta that the US administration understood Turkey’s concerns about supplying the Kurds, but said the situation is such in Kobani that the resupplies were deemed absolutely necessary in a “crisis moment”. “Let me say very respectfully to our allies the Turks that we understand fully the fundamentals of their opposition and ours to any kind of terrorist group and particularly obviously the challenges they face with respect [to] the PKK,” Kerry said. “But we have undertaken a coalition effort to degrade and destroy Isil [isis], and it is presenting itself in major numbers in this place called Kobani.” Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavusoğlu said that the decision to allow the peshmerga to pass through its territory was in line with a wider regional effort to fend off Isis. “We want the region to be cleared of all threats. We assess the military and medical materials aid provided by our Iraqi Kurdish brothers and airdropped by the United States to all forces defending Kobani in this framework,” he said. “There are seven or eight groups that are fighting together with the PYD [the Democratic Union party] [in Syria].” Some observers pointed out that the perceived policy shift in Ankara was no surprise and pointed to a string of violent protests that shook Turkey two weeks ago in response to the government’s perceived inaction over the crisis in Kobani. Nevertheless, it underscores a bewildering array of allegiances: Turkey last week bombed PKK positions inside its borders, and is days later preparing to aid the PYD, which it says is a direct PKK ally. Mesut Yegen, a historian of the Kurdish issue, said that Turkey could not risk the fall of Kobani: “The events from two weeks ago clearly showed that if Kobani should fall, the peace process would end. The Turkish government wanted to test how people would react, and they saw what would have happened. Turkey can no longer be seen as watching the drama in Kobani unfold without doing anything.” Additional reporting: Mais al-Bayaa http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/oct/20/turkey-allows-peshmerga-forces-to-travel-to-kobani
  12. • Officer on administrative leave after incident in Tallahassee • Investigation promised into incident captured on video Associated Press in Tallahassee, Florida theguardian.com, Wednesday 1 October 2014 14.58 BST A Florida police officer is on administrative leave after he fired a stun gun into a 62-year-old woman’s back during an arrest. At an early Wednesday news conference the Tallahassee police chief, Michael DeLeo, said there will be an internal affairs investigation of the incident, which occurred on Tuesday. Someone on a nearby porch captured the incident on video, which was released by police. Officers were investigating complaints about drug sales. DeLeo says officers had detained three people when Viola Young approached, inquiring about one of the arrests. An officer told her to stay back and another officer attempted to arrest her. In the video, Young appears to be walking away when the officer uses his stun gun, striking her in the back. She falls face-first to the ground. Young was later taken to jail. It is not known whether she has a lawyer. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/oct/01/florida-police-shoot-woman-stun-gun
  13. By Dana Ford and Jason Hanna, CNN June 10, 2014 -- Updated 2217 GMT (0617 HKT) (CNN) -- When the shooting started at her high school near Portland, Oregon, early Tuesday, student Jaimie Infante didn't recognize the sound of the gunshot. She thought maybe somebody had dropped a book. In reality, a lone gunman had opened fire at the school, killing one student and forcing others to flee. An assistant principal told students to go into lockdown mode. "At the end he said: 'This is not a drill,'" Infante told CNN. A teacher suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was treated at the scene. The suspected gunman is also dead, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said. According to multiple law enforcement officials, the shooter was a student at the school. The gunman appears to have died from a self-inflicted wound, the sources told CNN. Authorities are working to notify the relatives of both the shooter and the student, neither of whom has been identified. Officials believe they know who the gunman was, but they are "not confident enough" to reveal details yet, Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson told reporters midday Tuesday. "Today is a very tragic day for the city of Troutdale and Reynolds School District," he said. "I'm very, very sorry for the family, and for all the students, and everybody who will be impacted by this tragic incident." 'Could have been much worse' The shooting happened at about 8 a.m. (11 a.m. ET) at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, about 12 miles east of Portland. The city has a population of about 16,400 people. Classes were in session at the time. Details about what led to the shooting weren't immediately available. The gunman is believed to have used a rifle. A couple of SWAT teams responded, said Sue Strickland of the Troutdale Police Department. "Without the quick and well-executed response, this tragedy could have been much worse," the Reynolds School District said in a statement. Anxious parents waited for news that their children were safe. One couple, Craig Tuholski and Tawnjia Reimer, were talking with CNN affiliate KGW, about how agonizing the wait for news was, when Tuholski's cell phone rang. "Is that Chris?" Reimer asked before letting out a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank God." "That's what we were waiting for," Tuholski said after hanging up. About an hour after the shooting, Oregon State Police said the area was secure and the situation was contained. Obama: 'Levels of gun violence off the charts' Speaking in Washington, President Barack Obama said the nation should be ashamed of its inability to get tougher gun restrictions through Congress in the aftermath of mass shootings that he said have become commonplace in America. "Our levels of gun violence are off the charts. There's no advanced, developed country on Earth that would put up with this," he said in response to a question about gun violence. Most members of Congress are "terrified" of the National Rifle Association, the President said, adding that nothing will change until public opinion demands it. "The country has to do some soul searching about this. This is becoming the norm, and we take it for granted, in ways that as a parent are terrifying to me," Obama said. CNN first learned of the shooting through reports on Twitter. Special sentence sought for Seattle college shooting suspect Las Vegas shooting victim's friend: 'You never expect it' Timeline of U.S. school violence CNN's Mariano Castillo, Steve Almasy, Tom Cohen, Evan Perez, Pam Brown, Shimon Prokupecz and Stefan Simon contributed to this report. http://edition.cnn.com/2014/06/10/justice/oregon-high-school-shooting/
  14. Suspects shouted: 'This is a revolution', before shooting officers and a shopper in an apparent suicide pact Associated Press theguardian.com, Sunday 8 June 2014 20.24 EDT A couple have shot and killed two police officers at a Las Vegas pizza restaurant before killing a third person and and then themselves inside a nearby Walmart. A man and woman walked into CiCi's Pizza and shot at point-blank range Alyn Beck, 42, and Igor Soldo, 32, who were eating lunch on Sunday, Las Vegas police officials said. One of the suspects shouted: "This is a revolution," but the motive for the shooting remains under investigation. One of the officers fired back before he died, but it is unclear if the suspects were hit, sheriff Doug Gillespie of the Las Vegas metro police department said at a news conference on Sunday afternoon. The suspects then fled to the Walmart across the street, where they fatally shot a person inside the front door and exchanged gunfire with officers before killing themselves in an apparent suicide pact, police said. The female suspect shot the male suspect before killing herself, Gillespie said. The victim's identity has not been confirmed, and the suspects' names have not been released. "It's a tragic day," Gillespie said. "We have a community to protect, we will do it with our heads held high." Nevada governor Brian Sandoval said he was devastated by the murders of the two officers and an "innocent bystander". Clark county assistant sheriff Kevin McMahill said at a news conference that the male suspect shouted "everyone get out" before the shooting at Walmart. The man and woman then went to the back of the store. The names of the suspects and victims and their cause of death will be released by the Clark county coroner's office. Walmart employees and shoppers were taken to a nearby clothing store to be interviewed by police. The restaurant and Walmart remained closed as detectives processed evidence. Walmart issued a statement saying it was working with police on the investigation. "We express our deepest condolences to everyone who has been affected by this senseless act of violence," company spokesman Brooke Buchanan said. Sheree Burns, 48, told the Las Vegas Sun she was eating at the restaurant, seated just behind the two officers when a man came up to one of the officers and shot him in the head She said she ducked under her table but peeked up and saw the other officer being shot. Pauline Pacheco was shopping at Wal-Mart when she saw the armed man and grabbed her father to escape, KLAS-TV reported. "We saw when the man was walking, he was shouting, yelling bad words, and suddenly he had a gun," she told the station. "It was terrible, it was terrible. That man was crazy." McMahill said the male suspect yelled "everyone get out" before shooting at Wal-Mart. The suspects then walked to the back of the store. 15. Days before England play Italy in their first match at the World Cup, the Italians are in hot water in Brazil for a television commercial in which Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Christ the Redeemer statue is dressed in a giant Italian football shirt By Nick Squires, in Rome 12:31PM BST 09 Jun 2014 Days before England play Italy in their first match at the World Cup, the Italians are in hot water in Brazil for a television commercial in which Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Christ the Redeemer statue is dressed in a giant Italian football shirt. The Catholic Church in Brazil says the digitally-manipulated advertisement, which is running as a trailer for the competition on Italy’s state broadcaster, Rai, is disrespectful and inappropriate. The 30-second video shows children dressed in the blue shirt of the “Azzurri” (Italy’s national team) scoring goals during games of street football and ends with an image of the towering statue of Christ wearing a number 10 shirt with the word “Italia” written across the shoulders. “Brazil awaits us”, the advertisement says. The Archdiocese of Rio has threatened to sue the Italian broadcaster for between 15 and 21 million real (£4 million - £6 million.....$6,718 - $10,078M) in damages, promising to give the money to charity if it wins the case. “The Archdiocese is deeply offended,” Rodrigo Grazioli, a lawyer for the Brazilian Church, told O Globo newspaper. “It’s as if Brazilian TV were to make a commercial in which mulatto girls engaged in lewd behaviour with the gladiators of the Colosseum.” It is not the first time the Catholic Church has clashed with the advertising world over the Christ statue, an instantly recognisable symbol of Rio which looms over its bays and beaches. During the 1998 World Cup in France, the Pirelli tyre company ran a campaign in which Ronaldo, the Brazilian footballer, replaced the figure of Christ, towering over the city in a blue and black Inter Milan strip. In the commercial, Ronaldo appeared with his arms outstretched and one leg raised, with the sole of his foot covered in Pirelli tyre tread. “Power is nothing without control,” was the message of the commercial, which also proved controversial with the Catholic Church. 16. Ben Yakas in News on May 24, 2014 11:30 am An Italian tourist in NYC to visit his girlfriend was fatally punched outside a bodega in the Bronx on Friday. Police say that Oliver D’Orio, 37, was punched in the face around 12:10 a.m. yesterday in front of Guerrero Bodega on Washington Avenue and East 184th Street. He hit his head on the sidewalk and immediately lost consciousness; he was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead. You can see video of the punch below: Video on link Witnesses say that D'Orio was asking customers, including the suspect, at the bodega for alcohol when the incident happened: "[D'Orio] was pestering [the suspect], saying, 'Buy me a beer, buy me a beer,'" bodega clerk Julio Minier told the Post. "They came out onto the street and when the fight started he punched him with an open hand. The man went down. I knew he was dead when he hit the ground." Other locals told the Post that D'Orio, who was reportedly drunk and carrying a banana that night, had been menacing people prior to the incident: "Last night he was yelling outside and banging outside the Phoenix House [rehab center]. He was yelling and banging on the door…holding a bottle of [booze] ten minutes before he was put down," said neighbor Luis Williams. D'Orio, an Italian citizen who lives in Switzerland, had been in the city for 10 days; he was planning to fly home next Thursday. "That guy didn’t mean to kill him,” a witness named Frankie told the News. "They started fighting and he fell back and hit his head—and he didn’t get back up." 17. The Telegraph joins an Italian Coast Guard aircraft searching the Mediterranean for migrants making the treacherous journey across the Mediterranean to Lampedusa By Nick Squires, Lampedusa 9:04AM BST 23 May 2014 The Italian Coast Guard surveillance plane swung low over the glittering Mediterranean, thundering above the waves at a height of just 300ft. Officer Alessio Leocata trains his eyes on the deep blue waters picking out a scattering of fishing boats innocently plying their way home. But then he spots something altogether more sinister - a boat equipped with two powerful outboard engines with not a soul on board. Zooming in on the vessel with an infra-red camera, so powerful that it can discern the name of a boat from several miles away, Leocata confirms that it is empty. “It looks like it’s been abandoned by people smugglers,” said Capt Bruno Massimiliano, the pilot. “Sometimes they place a GPS device on it so that they can come back and retrieve it, other times they just leave it in the middle of the sea.” The whereabouts of its occupants - likely to have been dozens of migrants hoping to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa, a few hours’ sailing to the north - was a mystery. A short time later, a blip appears on the radar. This time it is a boat with people on board, heading north from the coast of Libya. When it is intercepted a few hours later by an Italian Coast Guard patrol boat, it is found to contain 320 Eritrean migrants. A severely dehydrated woman and her young child had to be taken by helicopter to Lampedusa for urgent hospital treatment while the rest were transferred to an Italy navy frigate and taken to the port of Pozzallo in Sicily. For Officer Leocata, the sightings are now no longer a surprise -they are routine. He is at the sharp end of an operation code-named by Italy “Mare Nostrum” (Our Sea), designed to intercept and rescue the huge number of hastily-constructed boats full of desperate refugees that almost daily ply the dangerous route between the coast of North Africa and Italy’s southern-most shores. Italy says it is being overwhelmed by the sheer number of migrants who are crossing from the North African coast - mostly from Libya - in search of a better life in Europe. It is not uncommon for 1,000 or more to be picked up in a single day. So far this year, 36,000 migrants have reached Italy, compared with 43,000 in the whole of 2013 and just 13,000 in 2012. Angelino Alfano, the interior minister, has said that unless Italy gets more help from the rest of Europe, it will simply allow the refugees in its reception centres cross its borders to neighbouring countries. "The European Union has two options: either it comes to the Mediterranean to put the EU flag on Mare Nostrum or we will let migrants with right of asylum leave for other countries," he wrote on Twitter. The authorities fear that by the end of this year the numbers will match the previous record, 2011, the year of the Arab Spring, when more than 62,000 came. The Italian government, citing information gleaned by its intelligence services, believes that are up to 800,000 migrants languishing in grim camps in Libya and other parts of northern Africa, waiting to make the crossing to what they view as the promised land. There are middle-class Syrians fleeing the murderous civil war in their homeland, West Africans from Mali and Burkina Faso in search of jobs and Eritreans and Somalis escaping the chaos in the Horn of Africa. They pay smugglers on average $3,000 to $4,000 to get them to Europe, officials told The Telegraph. Before they even attempt the perilous sea voyage, many have already been through hell - crossing the Sahara by truck or foot, beaten by gangs of smugglers, sold by one trafficking group to another, the women routinely raped. “I performed surgery on a young African man who had machete wounds to his hand, who said he had been attacked by smugglers in order to strike terror into the rest of his group - and another man, an Egyptian, who had a gunshot wound to his leg,” said Giada Bellanca, a doctor from the Order of Malta, a charity which deploys teams of medics on Italian navy ships. The pace of arrivals is expected to pick up dramatically as summer approaches and sea conditions improve. Lampedusa’s overcrowded migrant reception centre was closed early this year after controversy over its treatment of refugees, so new arrivals are now taken instead to centres in Sicily. Around 30,000 are currently languishing in these facilities, waiting to have their asylum applications processed. After a day or two, many others simply walk out of the main gates and disappear - headed for the most part towards wealthier northern European countries like Germany, France and the UK. In order to evade the Dublin Regulation, which stipulates that migrants must have their asylum applications processed in the country in which they first arrive, some migrants paint their fingers with nail varnish or strong glue so that they cannot be fingerprinted. Having avoided identification, they are then able to leave Italy and lodge their asylum applications in the country of their choice, officials say. “The system is on the point of collapse,” Giovanni Pinto, the director of immigration at the interior ministry, told a parliamentary committee last month. “We no longer have enough places in which to accommodate them and local people are tiring of the continual arrival of foreigners. On the coasts of Libya there are at least 800,000 more ready to cross.” Operation Mare Nostrum was initiated last October, after more than 350 migrants lost their lives when their boat capsized within sight of Lampedusa, Italy’s southern-most territory, in a tragedy that led to soul-searching and prompted calls for something to be done to address the migration crisis. But it is now at the centre of an intense debate, with critics, many of them politicians from the centre-Right, claiming that far from deterring migrants, it has encouraged more of them to cross the Mediterranean. The Italian navy and Coast Guard are acting as an unwitting “taxi service” for the migrant boats, with smugglers sure that the boats will be intercepted a day or two out from the North African coast, critics say. As a result, they are able to supply the boats with less fuel than before and the cost of making the crossing has reportedly dropped significantly, making it affordable to even more asylum seekers. “Mare Nostrum is helping the smugglers and encouraging the invasion of our coasts and should be terminated immediately,” said Matteo Salvini, the head of the anti-immigrant, Right-wing Northern League. It is hugely expensive, costing Italy €9 million a month, according to Mr Alfano, the interior minister. Italy has repeatedly called for more money and resources to be provided by the European Union to stem an exodus of almost biblical proportions. “In the public perception, many people think migrants come in search of a better life - for economic reasons,” said Albrecht Boeselager, a senior member of the Order of Malta who is responsible for its humanitarian missions worldwide. “But in fact there are many other factors driving this - some are politically persecuted at home, others are lured by very powerful criminal trafficking bands." Meanwhile, the boats keep coming. Most of the migrants arrive with only the clothes they are wearing, and many are barefoot. “There are old people, pregnant women, tiny babies. Many of them are not even wearing shoes,” said Dr Bellanca, on board a Coast Guard launch as it cruised over the exact spot where the migrant boat capsized last October, off the coast of Lampedusa. “But when they see the Italian flag, they cry with relief. We gave Londoners the chance to try Google Glass for the first time: here's what happened By Matt Warman, Head of Technology 12:00PM BST 23 May 2014 Google Glass is the gadget that every geek’s been talking about for more than two years: to some it’s “a computer on your face” and to others it’s the “wearable” future of modern technology. In San Francisco, people have been attacked simply for wearing this potent political symbol of how technology companies and their rich employees are changing the world. In London, however, the device is little seen and less understood – while some Google employees are sometimes spotted wearing Glass around their offices, few people realise that its tiny screen can show web search results, translations, directions and the pictures or videos that its tiny camera can take. Glass faces two challenges: people worry it invades their privacy, often asking if it’s recording all the time, and often think it looks terribly unfashionable. In London’s Green Park, we spoke to tourists and locals about what they thought, however, and many didn’t even balk at the $1,500 price tag currently being charged to the American ‘explorers’ who are happy to pay for the privilege of being Google’s guinea pigs. None even asked if it has facial recognition. Perhaps most surprisingly, however, some could envisage a future where Glass is as normal as a mobile phone – but as one put it, Google and Apple are very good at convincing people to buy things they don’t need. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/google/10849381/Google-Glass-review-what-the-public-think.html
  19. Football fans clash in Rome before the Italian Cup final, between Napoli and Fiorentina, delaying kick-off by 45 minutes 2:52PM BST 04 May 2014 The kick-off of the Italian Cup soccer final match between Napoli and Fiorentina was delayed on Saturday after clashes near Rome's Olympic Stadium. Clashes took place in the Tor di Quinto area close to the stadium, with rival supporters throwing firecrackers and other objects at each other ahead of the game which was due to kick off at 1900 GMT but was delayed by 45 minutes. In another incident before the match, three Napoli fans were shot. One of the men was taken to hospital in a critical condition after being hit in the chest, while two others who had been shot in the arm were also treated in hospital. The pistol used in the incidents has been found by the police, the AGI and ANSA news agency said. However, the police said in a statement that the three shootings did not appear to be linked to the broader clashes in the Tor di Quinto area. The website of daily newspaper La Repubblica reported a total of six people had been injured in the clashes. ANSA put the tally at 10 and said four were in hospital. A large section of the Napoli supporters watched the match in almost complete silence in protest to the events outside. Napoli eventually beat Fiorentina 3-1 to win the cup for the fifth time on Saturday, with Italy international Lorenzo Insigne scoring twice. 20. The loss of the elite crew ranks as one of the worst wildfire disasters in history. William M. Welch and Gary Strauss, USA TODAY and The Arizona Republic staff 10:54 p.m. EDT July 1, 2013 PRESCOTT, Ariz. — As firefighters tried to gain control over a stubborn, swelling wildfire near here Monday, this close-knit mountain town was trying to contain its grief. Many flocked to Prescott Fire Station No. 7, the small, one-story base of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, the elite firefighting crew that lost 19 of 20 men as they were overcome Sunday by the swift, erratic Yarnell Hill Fire 30 miles to the south. Juliann Ashcraft said she learned that her husband, Andrew, 29, was among the dead by watching the news with her four children. "They died heroes," she said, wiping away tears. "And we'll miss them. We love them." Most were in their 20s, but ranged in age from 21 to 43. Outside a gated, locked fence where more than a dozen vehicles left behind by the lost firefighters remain parked, a stream of tearful mourners honored the loss of neighbors, relatives and friends with flowers, signs, balloons, flags, caps, letters, religious figures and other mementos. Prescott resident Keith Gustafson placed 19 water bottles in the shape of a heart. "When I heard about this, it just hit me hard," he said. "It hit me like a ton of bricks." The blaze — the worst wildfire tragedy since 1933 and the biggest loss of firefighters since 9/11 took 343 New York Fire Department personnel — was ignited Friday by lightning. The 2,000 acres burning Sunday quadrupled by Monday, with 8,400 acres engulfed in towering flames and unthinkable heat. Some 200 homes and businesses have been devoured in the towns of Glen Isla and Yarnell, 30 miles south of Prescott and about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix. Erratic winds and dry grasses have been feeding the inferno as more than 400 firefighters were trying to flank it from three sides in triple-digit heat. Air tankers and helicopters were also saturating the area to keep it from spreading. "This is a nightmare scenario for firefighting: thunderstorms producing little rainfall, unpredictable, shifting winds, and, of course, lightning strikes," Weather Channel meteorologist Jon Erdman said. Amie Nichols and fiancé Dustin Oliver came to honor Oliver's cousin and close friend, nicknamed Tiny. "He was always a good guy — always funny," said Oliver, who declined to name his cousin. "We grew up together. I haven't slept since I heard about it yesterday." http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/07/01/arizona-firefighters-disaster/2478537/
