  1. Sent to me by Senator Pompeo. Opinions Please. Dear Ms xxxxxxx Thank you for contacting me regarding Congressional benefits. I appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts with me. In order to make sound decisions, it is important for me to hear from Kansans. You will be glad to know that one of my first votes as a Member of Congress was to reduce the amount authorized for salaries and expenses of Member, committee, and leadership offices in 2011 and 2012 by five percent. This five percent cut is estimated to save $35.2 million in 2011 alone. Additionally, Congress has declined a cost-of-living salary increase over the past few years. As you may know, all Members of Congress currently pay into Social Security. Congressional retirement is funded through taxes and the Members' contributions to the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), and it is identical to the benefit that all other federal employees are eligible to receive. There is no special retirement system for Members of Congress. The health care benefit that Members of Congress receive has been in the news lately given passage and implementation of Obamacare. Much like the retirement system, I am eligible for the same health insurance coverage as any federal employee and pay the same premiums and deductibles. There is no special health care system set aside only for Members of Congress. While in Washington, I can also be seen by the House attending physician, a service for which I would have to pay. I personally support term limits. The change overall would help make elective office less of a career path and more of a temporary duty of citizens. I agree with you completely that it is an honor to serve in Congress representing the 4th District of Kansas. Once I am finished serving the people of Kansas, I want to get back to the thing I love —running a small business. Should legislation come to the House Floor on any of these issues, I will be sure to keep your views in mind. Again, thank you for your thoughts. If you have any additional concerns, please do not hesitate to call on me or Mike Netherton of my Washington, D.C. staff. It is an honor to serve the people of Kansas in the United States Congress. Sincerely, Mike Pompeo Member of Congress
  2. Regal Cinemas cuts workweek for thousands, blames ‘Obamacare’ The largest movie theater chain in the country has cut the workweek of thousands of its employees, blaming President Obama’s health care law in a company memo that announced its decision. Regal Entertainment Group scaled back shifts for non-salaried workers to part time, putting them under the threshold at which employers are required to provide health insurance, Fox News reports. “To comply with the Affordable Care Act, Regal had to increase our health care budget to cover those newly deemed eligible based on the law’s definition of a full time employee,” the memo reads. “In addition, some managers have requested guidance on what they should tell those employees negatively impacted and, at your discretion, we suggest the following: To comply with the Affordable Care Act, Regal had to increase our health care budget to cover those newly deemed eligible based on the law’s definition of a full-time employee.” “To manage this budget, all other employees will be scheduled in accord with business needs and in a manner that will not negatively impact our health care budget,” the announcement continued. A number of colleges and businesses, such as Applebee’s and Olive Garden, have taken similar measures in order to cope with health care costs. Other business are passing the costs onto the customers. “Mandating businesses to offer health care under threat of debilitating fines does not fix a problem, it creates one,” a Regal manager, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Fox News. “It fosters a new business culture where 30 hours is now considered the maximum in order to avoid paying the high costs associated with this law. “In a time where 40 hours is just getting us by, putting these kind of financial pressures on employers is a big step in a direction far beyond the reach of feasibility for not only the businesses, but for the employees who rely on their success,” he said. 3. I don't usually start topics but I wanted to share a story with my DV family.... I am a health insurance agent first off and I take calls from prospective clients. Yesterday I got a call from a lady 37 yrs old that wanted to get health insurance for just herself. She had a husband and 2 children but she only wanted it for herself. Going thru the process I learn she only wants to get health insurance so she can have her birth control insert taken out so she can have a third child. She is willing to pay $300 per month for health insurance, which is a pretty decent amount for a 37 yr old so she can do that. Have another baby and let the insurance company pay for it. Which wouldn't be so bad until I ask about her children and doesn't she want to cover them? She says oh no she doesn't need to because they are on state assistance!!! The state is already supporting 2 children and she wants to bring in another for us to support. UGH!!! Now it even gets better... My next call I get a lady who is 59 and has really never had insurance and goes on and on about how great its gonna be with Obummer care! I tell her the (above) story and she has the nerve to DEFEND that maybe we just don't see what's behind this women's desire to have a 3rd child. All she could talk about was the evil corporations. Now the big surprise was both of these people were in TX which is mostly republican, if its like this here what is it like in other states that are mostly dems. I can barely support myself I DONT want to support her third child! GEEZ! My attitude about having kids is... "Don't breed em if you cant feed em". I think I was born about 100 yrs too late... What happen to people standing up on their own 2 feet and when someone does need help the neighbors pitch in. Its just too much, how did it come to this? I am so sickened by all this and it stole my sleep last night. Thanks for letting me vent.
