  1. Designed by Congress to snare tax dodgers with funds stashed abroad, the new rules are also likely to hit unsuspecting immigrants and first-generation Americans. Even tax preparers may be caught off guard. "The days of the secret, offshore trust are over," said Richard Luthmann, a lawyer in New York who said he is working with clients from India and Canada on tax disclosure. The rules are "really hitting a lot of unsophisticated persons with international ties," he said. The IRS on Monday published nine pages of instructions for filling out a new form that taxpayers must file with 2011 tax returns due on April 15, 2012. The exact number of taxpayers affected is unclear, but is in the hundreds of thousands. The new form applies to U.S. taxpayers living in the United States with at least $50,000 in assets abroad as of December 31, and to Americans living abroad with at least $200,000 in assets.
  2. I'm from Rio, but I have been in Texas since 1974. What do you think about the news, TonyDownTheShore?
  3. I live in Texas, but I enjoy watching international channels in order to get news from abroad. As I was watching Globo Television News, from Brazil, the reporter said that the Central Banks of the world are joining together to rescue both the European and the international currency markets during this financial crisis. IMO, this is great news! Go RV!

  20. Allawi non-attendance 'not due to illness, but despondency' 22/06/2011 14:44 Erbil, June 22 (AKnews) - Allawi’s reason for failing to attend discussions to resolve the political crisis was not medical as reported, but rather due to his belief that the meetings are “pointless”, said a Kurdish Member of Parliament. Speaking to AKnews, Ashwaq Jaf, said that since Allawi believes ‘there is no point is such meetings he avoids them.’ The recent round of meetings, organized by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, started this week, but Allawi failed to attend, saying he was in London for medical treatment. leaders of almost all the major parties met in president’s house Monday to negotiate a common ground out of the current political crisis in the country. Allawi apologized from attending the meeting, saying he is on a visit to London for treatment. ‘He will only be ready for a meeting when the subject is to discuss Erbil agreement in concrete terms and a schedule for its enforcement has already been set,’ Jaf added. The agreement, signed last year, allowed for Talabani and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to retain their posts for the second successive term and the creation of a power sharing government, despite Allawi’s al-Iraqiya winning most seats in parliament. Allawi was to be appointed head of a new executive body, dubbed the National Council of Strategic Polices, but wrangling over the powers of the post have meant in is yet to be created. Allawi has accused Maliki of “evading and violating the Erbil deal” and Maliki for his part has said al-Iragiya is ‘adding new terms to the deal’. Bahaa al-Araji of the Anhar bloc, a Sadrist current within the ruling coalition, said that Allawi's non-attendance is not acceptable. "We need intensive meetings with the head of the Iraqiya list, Ayad Allawi. He must attend these meetings personally," he said. The tensions reached climax when on July 10 at a public protest rally Allawi’s images were burned by supposed Maliki supporters and Allawi responded saying the Prime Minister is a “hypocrite who depends on foreigners [implying Iran] for staying in power”.
