  10. Rockets hit Green Zone as Iraq marks Army Day Text size By Salam Faraj and Ammar Karim BAGHDAD, Jan 06, 2012 (AFP) - Rockets were fired against Baghdad's Green Zone as Iraq's military marked its anniversary with a parade Friday, a day after the country suffered its worst attacks since August and weeks after US troops left. Further violence against Shiite pilgrims, who were the targets of Thursday's bombings, killed two people, the latest in a spike in attacks against the majority community amid a political crisis that has stoked sectarian tensions. Meanwhile, top officials in Nasiriyah, worst hit by Thursday's bloodshed, held a funeral for two Sunni soldiers who, officers said, tried to prevent a suicide attack that killed 47 people in the southern city. In Baghdad, insurgents fired three rockets against the heavily-fortified Green Zone as Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki presided over a huge military parade to mark the 91st anniversary of the founding of Iraq's armed forces. The rockets hit the outer edge of the Green Zone, home to the US embassy and parliament, at 12:25 pm (0925 GMT) and did not cause any casualties, a senior intelligence official said on condition of anonymity. The noise caused by the rockets exploding could be heard from inside the grounds where the parade was taking place, an AFP journalist said. Iraq's fledgling 280,000-strong security force, completely reformed after the US-led invasion of 2003, meanwhile marked Friday's anniversary on stadium grounds under the gaze of Maliki, acting Defence Minister Saadun al-Dulaimi and Iraq's top military officer Lieutenant General Babaker Zebari. Heavy security measures were put in place for the parade, with journalists covering the event having to pass through five checkpoints after gaining access to the Green Zone, and several roads leading to the area shut off entirely. Inside, Iraqi flags of all sizes were on display throughout, as well as a large banner that read, "Side-by-side, to build and save Iraq". The parade came as two bombings in south Baghdad targeting Shiite pilgrims killed two people Friday morning, a day after attacks against Shiites in Baghdad and southern Iraq killed 70 people. In Nasiriyah, top officials attended a large funeral for two soldiers who authorities said gave their lives to try and stop the attacker. Lieutenant Nazham Faleh and Private Ali Ahmed Sabah, both Sunnis from north of Baghdad, tried to wrestle the insurgent away from a crowd of Shiite pilgrims who were resting on their way to the shrine city of Karbala for Arbaeen commemorations, their commander said. The bomber, who security officials said was carrying 35 kilograms (77 pounds) of explosives as well as nails and ball bearings, was nevertheless able to detonate his payload. "If they did not do that, the number of casualties would have doubled because of the huge amount of explosives he was carrying, and the huge number of people around," said Colonel Sattar Jabbar al-Rizzi, commander of the Iraqi army brigade responsible for securing the area. Also on Thursday, five bomb attacks against Shiite neighourhoods in north Baghdad killed 23 people, making the nationwide toll the worst since mid-August. The violence has dealt a blow to US and Iraqi claims that domestic forces are able to maintain internal security, let alone protect the country's borders. US forces dismantled the Iraqi army after toppling Saddam Hussein in 2003 in a move later panned for having put hundreds of thousands of men with military training out of work and created a potent recruitment pool for insurgents. Friday's parade marked the first Armed Forces Day since the December 18 withdrawal of US forces from Iraq, a country where there were once nearly 170,000 American troops on 505 bases. The parade came with Iraq mired in a political crisis, albeit one that appears to be easing with several leaders softening their rhetoric in recent days. The row was sparked by an arrest warrant issued for Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi on charges he ran a death squad. Hashemi, who is holed up in the autonomous Kurdish region in the north, denies the accusations, and his Iraqiya party has boycotted the cabinet and stayed away when parliament reopened on Tuesday. bur-psr/kirhttp://www.zawya.com/story.cfm/sidANA20120106T101737ZDDO08/Rockets_hit_Green_Zone_as_Iraq_marks_Army_Day

  13. Per capita income in Iraq to reach $10,000 in 2015 By Khayoun Ahmed Saleh Azzaman, January 4, 2012 Iraqis’ per capita income will double in three years, the Central Bank said. The bank’s deputy governor, Mohammed Saleh, said the per capita income in the country will shoot to $10,000 from the current $5,000. “Iraq’s GNP will be between $300 to $350 billion in 2015 with average per capita income reaching $10,000,” he said Saleh said Central Bank’s holdings of hard cash have never been so high in the country’s history “The bank enjoys strong foreign cash reserves of about $60 billionwhich are the highest in Iraq’s history,” he said. The hard cash reserves have enabled the bank to keep the national currency, the dinar, stable. But in December last year, it had to intervene heavily to save the currency from a plunge, selling hundreds of millions of dollars on the open market every day to withdraw liquidity. However, Saleh admitted that demand for hard cash was very high in Iraq. He did not say whether the bank will keep pouring dollars into the markets to stabilize the dinar if the demand did not slacken. For some time in December, when the currency plunged to lows unseen since it was launched in 2003, Saleh put the demand for dollars at $400 million a day on the open market. The sum, he believed, was massive and he had no specific interpretation for the sudden rise in demand. The bank has increased the sum of hard cash it sells every day at a special rate by nearly 30 percent. Up to $200 million are currently sold daily from nearly $150 million before the hike in demand. It is not clear whether the bank will be able to keep selling dollars at such a rate for a long time, particularly if demand increases. At the rate of $400 a day, the bank will empty its hard cash coffers in in about 150 days. There are fears that many Iraqi traders are trying to cash in by trading with both Syria and Iran – the countries facing economic difficulties due to trade sanctions. http://www.azzaman.com/english/index.asp?fname=news\2012-01-05\kurd.ht

  18. Iraq Seeks $1.5 Billion in Gas Investment, Adviser Says Iraq seeks $1.5 billion in natural - gas investments in the country's next licensing round of energy right set for March, a senior petroleum expert on the prime minister's advisory commission said. Gas from the seven or eight concessions to be offered for bids can be brought to market as early as 2015, Natik al-Bayati said today at a conference in Istanbul. He estimated Iraq’s gas reserves at 130 trillion cubic feet, 80 percent of which is associated gas found together with deposits of crude oil. Iraq had the fifth-biggest gas reserves in the Middle East in 2010, according to data from BP Plc. While the government relies mostly on sales of crude for revenue, it wants to produce gas as fuel for power stations, which are unable to meet domestic demand, and eventually as an export product. Al-Bayati said the country expects to add about 30 trillion cubic feet in proved reserves over the next 10 years. Iraq may have additional, unproved reserves of 100 trillion to 300 trillion cubic feet, of which 80 percent is probably non- associated gas, he said. Iraq has signed 15 gas and oil licenses since the U.S.-led invasion overthrew former President Saddam Hussein in 2003. The government plans a new, fourth round of oil and gas exploration rights for March. http://www.oil.gov.iq/moo/feeds.php?lang=en&page_name=news&id=200
