  4. http://www.grindtv.com/lifestyle/culture/post/waves-for-water-seeks-to-get-water-filters-to-those-in-need/ People A Lifestyle // Culture Blog Waves for Water seeks to get water filters to those in need The project sprung from the devastation of the 2009 Sumatra earthquake July 24, 2013 by Heather Hansman 1 In 2009, surfer Jon Rose was on a boat on his way to Bali when an earthquake hit Sumatra, leveling Padang and limiting the city’s access to clean water. After witnessing the devastation, he soon founded Waves for Water, a nonprofit that distributes water filters to areas that don’t have clean water. They’ve stepped in after Hurricane Sandy and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Now, Rose and Waves for Water are trying to get travelers to bring filters with them when they travel and drop them off in needy communities so that they’re impacting as many places as possible. As they say, “The idea isn’t to get one person to drop off 100 filters and call it a day. Let’s try to get 100,000 travelers to each pack 10 small filters, or team up with groups to implement projects with larger filters for an entire village.” To get the scoop on the ongoing project, we caught up with Rose: Jon Rose at work; photo by Waves for Water What made you start Waves to Water? Was there one experience or moment? I was aboard a boat off the coast of Sumatra during a surf trip in September 2009 when I felt a slight shake. I had no way of knowing at the time, but a 7.6 earthquake had destroyed the nearby city of Padang, with more than 1,000 lives lost and 100,000 homeless. I came to shore and saw the devastated city. I happened to be en route to Bali to deliver 10 water filters, but with tragedy striking Sumatra, I went into Padang to get water filters into the hands of rescue workers to help those who were most in need of clean water. That was the start of Waves For Water. Jon Rose, backside air, Indonesia; photo by Waves for Water As a surfer, how has your travel shown you the problems with access to clean water? Why is that so important to you? I’ve always been somewhat socially conscious, or tried to be, but as a pro surfer I had a pretty self-indulgent lifestyle. My dad got involved in the water cause; he started the organization Rain Catcher. He worked in Africa, focusing on developing simple ways to catch rainwater and teaching people how to do that themselves so they didn’t have to walk 5 miles to a pond. About six years after he started it, when I was looking for a way to transition out of my surfing career, I thought, “I can do that, too.” I’d seen the need for clean water in all the places I’d surfed. Waves for Water was born out of realizing I could go to all the places I know from surfing and help. If I stuck to that list I’d be busy until I’m dead. Then the project transformed into more of a special ops mindset of providing urgent relief—not always in direct response to a disaster, like an earthquake, but in places that are disastrous day after day. We call this guerilla humanitarianism. What did you guys do after Hurricane Sandy? In my line of work I am used to seeing areas wiped out with a seemingly endless road to recovery. The region devastated by Sandy is no different. The sheer scope of destruction is mind-boggling. Within a couple days of the storm, I knew we needed to be in the coastal communities in New York and New Jersey to provide support. Sandy struck such a personal chord with me because, as a surfer, I knew that most of the communities hit by Sandy were surf/beach lifestyle-based; many of them I had spent time in personally over the years. In addition, I had friends that lost a business or home, or both. On July 16, ultra-endurance athlete and ESPY Award winner Jason Lester finished running across the U.S. in support of Waves for Water’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Initiative. He’d been running since May 5; he left from San Francisco and ran to New York City. He raised money for Michelle and Timothy Kelly, who are the owners of Earth Arts in Long Beach, New York. Hurricane Sandy destroyed their business and home but instead of focusing on their own situation following the storm, the Kellys began to actively help their community to rebuild, putting the needs of others before their own. <iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/66929449" width="400" height="300" frameborder="0" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe> What projects are you excited about now? Probably due to my personal background, I will probably always see things through some sort of a sport-based lens; it’s how I relate and begin to problem solve. A game, a trick, or any athletic feat is just a series of problems/challenges that needs to be solved or overcome. That said, we recently developed a partnership in Brazil, with soccer phenom Neymar Jr. and his institute, Instituto Projeto Neymar Jr., which resulted in 85,000 people getting access to clean water. We named the project “Sede de Vencer,” which means “Thirsty for Winning” in Portuguese. It kicked off this summer, following Neymar and the Brazilian National Team during the Confederations Cup, and addressed the clean water needs for those living in under-served areas in the five cities that hosted the games of the Cup: Brasília, Salvador, Fortaleza, Belo Horizonte, and Rio de Janeiro. The main philosophy behind Waves for Water has always been to go do what you love and help along the way, and that’s exactly what this was. It really is a great example of our model at work. Ultimately, we designed this model with hopes that it could be plugged into all walks of life, not just for surfers, or the adventurous traveler, but also for soccer players, musicians, clothing manufacturers, chefs, and filmmakers. This project was symbolic. It spoke directly to the clean water needs here in Brazil, but in such a specific way, by coinciding with something everyone in Brazil loves: soccer. This is a concept that, I believe, can be replicated through almost every other genre of life. Why is water so important? People living in impoverished areas die every day from drinking dirty water. While having access to clean water is a luxury that many of us take for granted, there are millions living around the world with no filtration systems in place. Kids drink from the same streams where animals bathe. In addition, there’s no clean water available for surgery if someone is injured, putting the wounded at risk of deadly infections. What can I do to help? What can the surfing community do? You can become a Clean Water Courier! Clean Water Couriers for Waves For Water are travelers distributing filters to those in need around the globe. There are a few different ways to get involved; you can find missions in progress trying to raise money for projects around the world and donate to them, or you can create your own Clean Water Courier Mission and get filters to distribute on your next adventure.

"The jewellery community is one in supporting the country in times of crisis. We are happy to help with this voluntary action. This is likely to continue for six months or till the CAD crisis is reduced. However, the government must make fundamental changes to increase manufacturing and that will lead to value added exports," federation's Chairman Haresh Soni said in a statement. The federation has conducted over one dozen meetings across the country with all the local jewellers associations and members in the last one week to explain the precarious CAD situation, he said. "We have requested entire trade across the country to stop selling and taking orders for gold bullion and coins," he added. Small and large jewellers, manufacturers, major jewellery retail chains have committed to the GJF that they will stop sales and stop taking orders of coins and bullion gold bars to consumers and corporates. Jewellery sales and value-added employment generating gems and jewellery activity will remain unaffected. GJF represents over 6,00,000 players comprising manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, distributors, laboratories, gemologists, designers and allied services. Current account deficit, which touched 4.8 per cent of GDP last fiscal, is one of the reasons behind the weakening of rupee that has fallen to all-time lows of 60 against dollar. CAD, which is the difference between the outflow and inflow of foreign currency, touched a record high of 6.7 per cent during October-December quarter. The central bank had said the trade deficit has widened during April-May due to surge in festival related or seasonal gold imports. To curb demand, the government hiked the import duty on gold three times in a year and raised it by 2 per cent to 8 per cent. Besides, RBI too has put restrictions on banks on importing gold.

Security Council brought Iraq one step closer on Thursday to ending United Nations sanctions imposed on Baghdad more than two decades ago after former President Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait In 1990. The 15-member council unanimously agreed that the issue of missing Kuwaiti people, property and archives should be dealt with under Chapter 6 of the U.N. Charter - which urges countries to peacefully resolve any conflicts - instead of Chapter 7. Chapter 7 of the charter allows the Security Council to authorize actions ranging from sanctions to military intervention if states do not abide by council demands. The move by the council is a significant political boost for Baghdad as it struggles to restore its international standing a decade after a U.S.-led invasion of Iraq toppled Saddam in 2003. The Security Council resolution recognized "the importance of Iraq achieving international standing equal to that which it held prior to (1990)." U.S.-led troops drove Iraq out of Kuwait in the 1991 Gulf War. "This is a new beginning for the relations between our two neighborly and brotherly countries," Iraq's Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told reporters after the vote. "This is an example for other countries also to resolve their disputes and differences through peaceful means." The only issues linked to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait that remain under Chapter 7 are an arms embargo and Baghdad's payment of $52 billion in compensation to Kuwait, diplomats say. Iraq still owes $11 billion and has said it expects to pay by 2015. There are still a range of Chapter 7 issues imposed on Baghdad after Saddam's ouster in 2003, diplomats say, including the freeze and return of Saddam-era assets and trade ban on stolen Iraqi cultural property. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has recommended that the U.N. political mission in Iraq should take responsibility for facilitating the search for missing Kuwaitis, or their remains, property and the country's national archives. 9. Epidemic of Birth Defects and Cancer in Iraq: America's Toxic LegacyEpidemic of Birth Defects and Cancer in Iraq: America's Toxic Legacy by Stephen Lendman America's Gulf War, intermittent bombings in the 1990s, the 2003 war, and aftermath left a toxic legacy. Children born with two heads reflect it. Some had only one eye. Missing sockets look like the inside of an oyster. They're milky and shapeless. Some children had tails like a skinned lamb. One or more had a monkey's face. Girls had their legs grown together. They were half fish, half human. Miscarriages are frequent. Hundreds of newborns have cleft pallets, elongated heads, overgrown or short limbs, and other malformed body parts. Some are too gruesome to view. Deformed Iraqi newborns are commonplace. So are virtually every known illness and disease. They're inordinately frequent. They range from severe headaches, muscle pain and debilitating fatigue, to serious infections, cardiovascular disease, brain tumors and numerous type cancers. They include leukemia, Hodgkin's disease and multiple myeloma. Others affect the bile ducts, bones, brain, breasts, colon, prostate, esophagus, gall bladder, liver, lungs, pancreas, pharynx, ovaries, salivary glands, small intestine, stomach, thyroid, urinary tract, and pelvis. Cancer's been around a long time. In October 2010, Nature.com headlined "Cancer: an old disease, a new disease or something in between?" It said a "striking rarity of malignancies in ancient physical remains might indicate that cancer was rare in antiquity…." University of Illinois School of Public Health/Cancer Prevention Coalition Chairman/Professor Emeritus Samuel S. Epstein titled his 1978 award-winning book "The Politics of Cancer." Twenty years later, he updated it. It's called "The Politics of Cancer Revisited." He's an internationally recognized cancer expert. He calls it a growth industry. Over recent decades, the incidence of numerous types skyrocketed. He referred to doing so in modern societies. Iraq and other US war theaters are different. Iraq perhaps is in a class of its own. Vast parts of the country are irradiated. On May 21, Science Daily headlined "Cancer and Birth Defects in Iraq: The Nuclear Legacy," saying: Ten years after the 2003 war, Mosul-based scientists "detected high levels of uranium contamination in soil samples at three sites in the province of Nineveh which, coupled with dramatically increasing rates of childhood cancers and birth defects at local hospitals." Iraq's a toxic wasteland. Scores of pollutants include dangerous chemicals and metals, oil, gasoline, pesticides, bacteria, other poisons, and irradiation. Widespread depleted uranium use caused it. US bombs, missiles, shells and bullets use solid DU projectiles or warheads. They're de facto nuclear bombs. Their widespread use is more harmful than Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Inhaled or ingested DU particles or dust is highly toxic. They're designated illegal weapons for good reason. America prioritizes their use. Iraqis suffer horrendously. Radioactive contamination is virtually everywhere. DU's half-life is 4.5 billion years. Contamination is permanent. According to Helen Caldicott: America's two Iraq wars "have been nuclear wars because they have scattered nuclear material across the land, and people, particularly children, are condemned to die of malignancy and congenital disease essentially for eternity." From 1991 - 2008, the incidence of birth defects and childhood cancer spiked sevenfold. Over one-third of US Gulf War vets are dead, seriously ill, or permanently disabled. Science Daily said widespread "carcinogenic material across Iraq suggests the public health legacy of the two Gulf Wars is only going to get worse." It does so annually. In October 2012, London's Guardian headlined "The victims of Fallujah's health crisis are stifled by western silence." Four new studies link "one of the most severe public health crises in history" to America's two November 2004 assaults on the city. Cancer rates and birth defects spiked dramatically. Cancer expert Dr. Chris Busby studied conditions. He called Fallujah's crisis "the highest rate of genetic damage in any population ever studied." In some respects, Basra replicates it. Its neural tube defects (aka "open back") incidence is unprecedented. Numbers keep rising. Hydrocenphalus (water on the brain) cases among newborns are sixfold higher than America. US munitions bear full responsibility. In September 2012, the Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology (BECT) headlined "Metal Contamination and the Epidemic of Congenital Birth Defects in Iraqi Cities." Evidence it reported was damning. From October 1994 - October 1995, congenital defects per 1,000 live births in Basra's Maternity Hospital was 1.37. In 2003, it was 23. It represented an "astonishing 17-fold (increase) in the same hospital." From 2003 - 2011, annual evaluations were conducted. Congenital birth defect occurrences and types were reported. Metal levels in hair, toenails and teeth were provided. Children with birth defects had nearly three times more lead in the enamel portion of deciduous teeth than others living in unimpacted areas. Parents were abnormally affected. Pregnant mothers and growing fetuses are especially vulnerable. Exposure to toxic air, water, and soil pollutants assures trouble. Following US bombings, contamination increased dramatically. Cancer, other diseases and birth defects followed. They're at epidemic levels. They keep rising. Populations in war zones suffer horrifically. Radiation-affected theaters compound it. BECT said nationwide Iraq ill health reports suggest greater crisis ahead. "News of increases in childhood cancers, of perinatal and infant morbidity and mortality, and of unusual increases in congenital birth defects, have continued to emerge from across Iraq." Data from central Iraq's Al-Ramadi corroborated Fallujah findings. Basra's seriously affected. "Present knowledge on the effects of prenatal exposure to metals, combined with our results, suggests that the bombardment of Al Basrah and Fallujah may have exacerbated public exposure to metals, possibly culminating in the current epidemic of birth defects." Internal pre-Gulf War data showed cancer incidence at 40 per 100,000. By 1995, it was 800. By 2005, it doubled to 1,600. Annually, numbers increase. They understate the problem's severity. Cancer and birth defect rates are likely much higher. Reporting falls short of what's needed. Iraq's a cauldron of disease, malformed newborns, pain, suffering, misery, deaths and despair. Daily violence, extreme poverty and unemployment, malnutrition, repression, dysfunctional infrastructure, permanent occupation, and other imperial priorities compound other problems. Media scoundrels don't explain. US ones hail an Iraq success story. In August 2008, The New York Times called "Iraq a remarkably safer place than it was when" Petraeus arrived. Violence "plummeted" significantly. Streets "are flourishing with life. The worst, for now, has been averted." America's toxic legacy was ignored. Violence then was more than acknowledged. Today it's out-of-control. Resource theft, ecocide, human misery, and health crisis conditions go unreported. News most fit to print is suppressed. Official fabrications substitute. It's standard scoundrel media practice. Most Americans don't know what's been done in their name. It's true in all US war theaters. They don't ask. They're not told. It happens every time.
