  1. The original Pledge of Allegiance

Francis Bellamy in his sermons and lectures and Edward Bellamy in his novels and articles described in detail how the middle class could create a planned economy with political, social and economic equality for all. The government would run a peace time economy similar to our present military industrial complex.

The Pledge was published in the September 8th issue of The Youth's Companion, the leading family magazine and the Reader's Digest of its day. Its owner and editor, Daniel Ford, had hired Francis in 1891 as his assistant when Francis was pressured into leaving his baptist church in Boston because of his socialist sermons. As a member of his congregation, Ford had enjoyed Francis's sermons. Ford later founded the liberal and often controversial Ford Hall Forum, located in downtown Boston.

In 1892 Francis Bellamy was also a chairman of a committee of state superintendents of education in the National Education Association. As its chairman, he prepared the program for the public schools' quadricentennial celebration for Columbus Day in 1892. He structured this public school program around a flag raising ceremony and a flag salute - his 'Pledge of Allegiance.'

His original Pledge read as follows: 'I pledge allegiance to my Flag and (to*) the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.' He considered placing the word, 'equality,' in his Pledge, but knew that the state superintendents of education on his committee were against equality for women and African Americans. [ * 'to' added in October, 1892. ]

Dr. Mortimer Adler, American philosopher and last living founder of the Great Books program at Saint John's College, has analyzed these ideas in his book, The Six Great Ideas. He argues that the three great ideas of the American political tradition are 'equality, liberty and justice for all.' 'Justice' mediates between the often conflicting goals of 'liberty' and 'equality.'

In 1923 and 1924 the National Flag Conference, under the 'leadership of the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution, changed the Pledge's words, 'my Flag,' to 'the Flag of the United States of America.' Bellamy disliked this change, but his protest was ignored.

In 1954, Congress after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus, added the words, 'under God,' to the Pledge. The Pledge was now both a patriotic oath and a public prayer.

Bellamy's granddaughter said he also would have resented this second change. He had been pressured into leaving his church in 1891 because of his socialist sermons. In his retirement in Florida, he stopped attending church because he disliked the racial bigotry he found there.

What follows is Bellamy's own account of some of the thoughts that went through his mind in August, 1892, as he picked the words of his Pledge:

If the Pledge's historical pattern repeats, its words will be modified during this decade. Below are two possible changes.

It began as an intensive communing with salient points of our national history, from the Declaration of Independence onwards; with the makings of the Constitution...with the meaning of the Civil War; with the aspiration of the people...

The true reason for allegiance to the Flag is the 'republic for which it stands.' ...And what does that vast thing, the Republic mean? It is the concise political word for the Nation - the One Nation which the Civil War was fought to prove. To make that One Nation idea clear, we must specify that it is indivisible, as Webster and Lincoln used to repeat in their great speeches. And its future?

Just here arose the temptation of the historic slogan of the French Revolution which meant so much to Jefferson and his friends, 'Liberty, equality, fraternity.' No, that would be too fanciful, too many thousands of years off in realization. But we as a nation do stand square on the doctrine of liberty and justice for all...

Some prolife advocates recite the following slightly revised Pledge: 'I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all, born and unborn.'

A few liberals recite a slightly revised version of Bellamy's original Pledge: 'I pledge allegiance to my Flag, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with equality, liberty and justice for all.'

  2. Barack Obama at a recent rural elementary school assembly in East Texas , asked the audience for total quiet. Then, in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands once every few seconds, holding the audience in total silence.

Then he said into the microphone, 'Children, every time I clap my hands together, a child in America dies from gun violence.'

Then, little Richard Earl , with a proud East Texas drawl, pierced the quiet and said: 'Well, dumb-a$$, stop clapping!'

  3. "preemptive" meaning, (US Allie attack). AR-15, unloaded weapon found in the trunk of suspect Adam Lanza's car was responsible for the death 20 kids and 6 teachers. Same story. Same garbage. If it works the way we perceive it, from now on, I will lay my shotgun at the base of my tree and walk away. Why freeze your a$$ of when the gun does the job you. Back Strap Baby!!!

  4. Obama did say that if he gets impeached he wants to be Pope. Italy is now claiming that Obama was born in their country before he was born in Hawaii and have the documentation to prove it. Therefore debunking claims by Multibillionaire Donald Trump and all his cronies. Thus far, James Carney has no comment until a complete and thorough investigation is conducted by the Congress. Vote responsibly! Obama for Pope!

  5. I say rand Paul/palin

    I watched his phillabuster

Its been a long time since a politician has stirred my blood like he did.

First sign of life I have seen in Washington in a might long time.

Your right Bro! It has been a while. I'm talking Strom Thurman and Lester Maddox kind of while, minus their prejudice. Still takes marbles to stand up to them and what you believe in on behalf of other people without a unanimous vote to do so. I didn't authorize him to speak on my behalf about anything, at all. He nailed it!! Nice to have a voice in Washington for a change. Maybe it'll catch on.

  6. Adam, Respectfully, the meaning of "Warning Points" is?, The intended outcome is? The "Like" button is great! Nay Sayers Beware! No more red button. Face to face or leave it alone. Thanks for that Adam.To view a members personal profile and the number of objectionable events is indeed personal and should not be viewed for the world to see. Maybe this should be moved into the development category. I know you're busy and who the hell am I to question you when I ride this train unabridged? Free ride if you will. Thanks Adam.

For decades, the Left has correctly asserted that rape is not a crime of passion, it’s a crime of power.  Second Amendment supporters have in turn pointed out that the great power equalizer is a gun.  A small woman who is trained and armed is effectively equal to (or even greater than) a large man with evil on his mind. Last night on Fox’s Sean Hannity Show, however, a Democrat strategist insisted that the best way to deal with this inherent power imbalance isn’t to let women arm themselves.  Instead, it’s “tell men not to rape women.”

On Tuesday night’s Sean Hannity Show, Democrat strategist Zerlina Maxwell — herself a rape victim — said that guns will never help women.  The only way to prevent rape, she said, it to tellmen to stop doing it.  Although Maxwell conceded that telling women to use ball point pens to defend themselves is “ridiculous,” she went on to state that guns aren’t the answer either.  Instead,

Fellow guest Gayle Trotter, a pro-gun advocate with the Independent Women’s Forum, and Sean Hannity were both shocked.  They pointed out to Maxwell that criminals are not known for their listening skills and that millions of people every year successfully use guns to defend themselves.  Maxwell was unimpressed.  Maybe a stranger rapist won’t listen, to a firm “No,” but she’s pretty darn sure her “just talk to them” strategy will work if a women is on the receiving end of spousal abuse or date rape:

I don’t think that we should be telling women anything.  I think we should be telling men not to rape women and start the conversation there.

But, but, sputtered Hannity, “Evil exists in the world.”  Again, Maxwell shrugged this off:

You’re talking about it is as if there’s some faceless, nameless criminal, when a lot of times it’s someone that you know and trust.

We can prevent rape by telling men not to commit it.
