  1. 1/17/2012 8:06 PM BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: A Middle Bloc MP excluded that the national conference will solve the present political crisis, pointing out that "it the conference failed, his bloc will withdraw confidence from Premier Nouri al-Maliki". MP Khalid al-Alwani, whose bloc is affiliated to al-Iraqiya Bloc, issued a statement, received by Aswat al-Iraq, pointing out the postponement of the preparatory sessions for the conference till next Sunday, as well "leaving Vice-President Tariq al-Hashimi's case to the judicial system, provided neutrality prevails". He stressed that al-Iraqiya Bloc will continue its suspension of parliament and cabinet sessions till the State of Law accepts the conditions made by it, pointing that "if the conference is failed, al-Iraqiya will withdraw confidence from Maliki". Alwani confirmed that meetings were held with Kurdish Alliance, the Higher Islamic Council and Ahrar bloc to form a political majority bloc to withdraw confidence from Maliki and establish a majority government", refusing Maliki's statement that he will form the majority government, because "most of the blocs that agreed to Arbil agreement want now to withdraw confidence, if the national conference failed". Premier Maliki decided to withdraw confidence from his deputy Saleh al-Mutlaq, a leading member in al-Iraqiya Bloc, for describing his as a "dictator". Furthermore, Vice-President Tariq al-Hashimi, a leading member of al-Iraqiya Bloc, was charged with terrorism, in addition to calls made by Salah al-Din, Diala and Anbar provinces to establish regions instead of province. Iraqiya bloc suspended its participation in parliament and cabinet sessions. On the other hand, Baghdad and a number of provinces were victims of terrorist attacks that resulted in hundreds of casualties, mostly civilians. Other problems of selecting security posts candidates and the differences between Kurdistan government and Baghdad on the implementation of Article 140 of the constitution were among the problems that stirred chaos in the Iraqi political arena. 2. BAGHDAD, Jan.17 (AKnews) - The Central Bank of Iraq expects the average annual income of an Iraqi individual in 2012 will reach almost $6,000 USD (7 million IQD), up from $5,200 USD (6 million IQD) in the previous year. Speaking to AKnews, deputy CBI governor Mudhar Mohammed Saleh said the estimate was made depending on the government investing in oil and economic projects in the coming year. According to UN reports there are still seven million people living below the poverty line in Iraq despite the fact that the oil rich country is now exporting 2.5 million barrels of oil per day. 3. BAGHDAD, Jan. 17 (AKnews) - Leader of Iraqiya List, head of the National Accord Movement and former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi does not mind where the much vaunted national conference is held. Not wanting to be stood-up, Allawi has said he will attend the conference only if the leaders of the main political blocs also attended. Allawi said Sulaimaniya would be suitable for holding the political confab. President Jalal Talabani is keen to get all the political parties round a table to talk out their difficulties and try to ease the tension that hangs over Iraq. The unity government has been something of an uneasy marriage for the last year. The fighting has turned into a feud that has the potential to turn really ugly. To that end Allawi wants the discussions to take place in Kurdistan so tanks are not stationed outside the meeting room. By Yazn al-Shummari http://www.aknews.com/en/aknews/4/284843/
  4. BAGHDAD, Jan. 17 (AKnews) - The Sadrist movement's Ahrar bloc on Tuesday launched a fresh effort at mediating between the State of Law Coalition and Iraqiya List in the run up to the national conference of all Iraqi political parties. The political tension escalated in Iraq after Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, a leading member of Iraqiya List, was indicted for terrrorism. He is wanted on charges of using his bodyguards as hit men, assassinating leading Shiites. The turmoil this created was stirred up even further when Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki fired his deputy Saleh al-Mutlaq for likening the Prime Minister to a dictator. Mutlaq unapologetically repeated his comparison in an exclusive interview with AKnews on Jan. 11, saying Maliki and his Dawa party are running Iraq as a dictatorship. The Ahrar bloc leader Hakim al-Zamili told AKnews: "We are seeking to end the political stalemate in the country. Ahrar began to hold meetings with SLC leaders and Iraqiya to solve problems through dialogue instead of media escalation." Iraqiya decided to boycott Councils of Ministers and Representatives' meetings saying it is being marginalized, excluded and accused Maliki of unilateral decision making. Maliki decided a few days ago to give open-ended leaves-of-absence for the boycotting ministers and assigned colleagues to manage their portfolios. This upset Iraqiya even more.
