Morning everyone! We had a major shift in US politics last night, so I'll touch briefly on it before talking about the Iraqi Dinar. If you just crawled out from under a rock and came here first for your news - the GOP now has a majority in Congress and they are calling it a HUGE victory. So.... is it a huge victory? I have some thoughts on it. In no particular order: 1. Obama still has a pen. 2. If nothing significant happens in the next two years, Dems will have an easier job of winning the next Presidential elections, simply by pointing out how ineffective the Republican Congress has been. They will conveniently forget that they fought every conservative initiative along the way. 3. In my opinion, one strategy the GOP could use is to back off on two issues - *** marriage and legalized marijuana. My personal opinions aside, the facts on those issues are simple - it's a useless fight. Marijuana will get legalized in more and more states, and if you like it or not *** marriage WILL happen eventually. Rather than continue to fight a losing battle, the GOP should use those items as bargaining chips to work on things that COULD be won, like the economy. 4. Was I imagining things, or did it look like a higher number of votes went to Independents than in the past? I plan on looking into that more... could be a good sign that people are actually starting to use their heads for more than a place to put a hat. 5. Finally, Obama is supposed to speak tonight - it should be interesting to hear how he spins this. In my estimate, his speech writers will already be working on sound bytes to blame the next two years of failure on Republicans. The bottom line for me on it is pretty simple... did the GOP walk away with a win last night? Yes, but unless they actually make some changes and do things different, it will have been a pointless victory.
