  14. Iraqi government to increase fuel prices Amr Salem March 27, 2024 670 2 min Cars filling up at a petrol station in Baghdad, Iraq. Photo: AFP Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The public has been shocked by the Iraqi cabinet’s recent decision on Tuesday to increase gasoline prices for automobiles. Premium gasoline will now cost 30 percent more, while super-grade gasoline will cost 25 percent more. This measure, which was part of a wider government attempt to alleviate traffic congestion, has instead caused considerable resentment and fury among drivers, particularly taxi drivers. The cabinet increased the cost of premium gasoline (95 octane) from 650 Iraqi dinars ($0.50) to 850 Iraqi dinars ($0.65) per liter at its weekly meeting. The price of super gasoline (98 octane) will rise from 1,000 to 1,250 dinars. The price of regular gasoline (low octane) will remain at 450 dinars. The cabinet said that the new rates would take effect on May 1. Mustafa Al-Kadhimi’s government reduced the cost of premium high-octane gasoline from 850 dinars to 650 dinars per liter in 2020. Growing worries are being expressed about the possible effects on the economy, particularly the possibility of a more widespread price increase that would affect many industries across the country.
  15. Iraq sings a contract with Iran to import gas for 5 years Amr Salem March 28, 2024 56 2 min A natural gas refinery at the South Pars gas field in Iran. Photo: AP Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced on Wednesday that a new five-year gas import contract had been signed with Iran, indicating that the volume of gas imports would reach 50 million cubic meters per day. The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity mentioned in a statement that the quantity will vary according to the requirements of the national grid, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported. The statement elaborated that the step aims to keep pace with the rising demand for electricity until the national gas fields are rehabilitated. In exchange for gas imports to Iraq to run electrical power plants, the US administration agreed earlier in March to grant Baghdad new exemptions to pay Iran’s financial obligations. Iran began exporting gas to Iraq in 2017, and according to the contract concluded between the two sides, Iran supplies Iraq with an average of 25 million cubic meters of gas per day. During the past years, due to the severe gas shortage in the winter, Iran reduced its gas exports to Iraq, and in some weeks it completely stopped the flow of Iranian gas, causing an electricity crisis in Iraq. About a third of Iraq’s electricity is produced by thermal power plants, which operate on gas imported from Iran.

  17. Iraq ranks 5th as S.Korea's largest crude oil supplier in February EconomyIraqBreakingOil 2024-03-28 03:48 Font Shafaq News / The Korean National Oil Corporation (KNOC) reported, on Thursday, that Iraq emerged as the fifth-largest source of crude oil during February. KNOC stated that Saudi Arabia topped South Korea's list of oil suppliers last month, exporting 25.390 million barrels, followed by the US with 13.626 million barrels, the United Arab Emirates with 11.110 million barrels, and Kuwait with 10.873 million barrels. The statement added that "Iraq ranked fifth as South Korea's largest oil supplier for February, with a total of 8.419 million barrels, up 13.13% compared to Febreuary 2023’s 7.429 million barrels. This also represents a 7.2% surge from the preceding month when exports reached 7.851 million barrels." According to the company's statement, "South Korea suspended the purchase of Kazakhstani crude oil blend, with no third-largest crude importer in Asia receiving any shipment of the product from Central Asia in February." "Major local refining companies found logistics services for purchasing light crude oil to be excessively costly and inefficient amidst ongoing maritime safety concerns in the Red Sea and the industry." Notably, Iraq and South Korea share a significant relationship in oil trade, marked by mutual economic interests and strategic cooperation. South Korea is a major importer of Iraqi crude oil, vital for meeting its energy demands and driving industrial growth. The two countries have established trade agreements and long-term contracts governing oil imports, with South Korea seeking to diversify its energy sources to ensure security. South Korean companies have invested in Iraq's oil sector, contributing to infrastructure projects and technological advancements. Despite challenges such as geopolitical instability and market fluctuations, both nations continue to explore opportunities for collaboration, exchanging technical expertise and fostering innovation in the oil industry.

  20. I found the below on Wikepdia The ship has a diesel engine for propulsion, and 4 diesel generators and they couldn't keep any of them running? My experience is limited to steam powered turbines and diesel generators. I don't know how the above is all interconnected, unless it was some sort of fuel issue. In the previous incident this ship had, they mentioned a Fuel Gauge issue. Yep, EM2, was in '80-'85. I was on the USS Lockwood (FF-1064), Home Port Yokosuka, Japan and the USS Goldsborough (DDG-20), I mentioned in an earlier post. My last electrical job was in '89. I'm an accountant now, believe it or not. My bbf I joined the Navy with, was an EM too, he became a Navy Diver, after we got separated for duty. Still has his helmet, actually, he was down in FL a few months ago and had another friend, that got him suited up in the dive suit and back in the water one last time. I don't know if we have ever discussed this before. .
