  10. Northern Iraq drone strike blamed on Turkey kills man AFP April 19, 2024 500 2 min Militants belong to Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq. Photo: Al-Arabiya News Erbil – One man has been killed in a drone strike in northern Iraq, a local official in the autonomous Kurdistan region said on Friday, attributing the attack to Turkey. Ankara regularly carries out ground and air operations in northern Iraq against positions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has waged a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state. “A Turkish drone strike on a car” killed a man, said Ihsan Chalabi, mayor of the mountainous Sidakan district near Iraq’s borders with Turkey and Iran. The body found on Friday is of “an inhabitant of the region who is a member of the Peshmerga”, the local Kurdish security forces, Chalabi told AFP. For decades, Turkey has operated several dozen military bases in northern Iraq in its war against the PKK, which Ankara and its Western allies consider a “terrorist” group. Both Baghdad and the Kurdish regional government have been accused of tolerating Turkey’s military activities to preserve their close economic ties. At the beginning of April, a “high-ranking military official” from the PKK was killed in a Turkish drone strike on a car in the mountainous Sinjar region, according to the Kurdistan counterterrorism services.
  11. Lufthansa Group suspends Iraq flights to early Saturday AFP April 19, 2024 894 2 min An Airbus A319 plane of the German Company Lufthansa stands at Frankfurt Airport; Lufthansa was named in a new Harvard report about social media greenwashing by fossil fuel interests Cologne – German airline group Lufthansa has suspended flights to Israel and Iraq until early Saturday after Israel reportedly carried out retaliatory strikes against arch-foe Iran. Services by airlines of the group to Tel Aviv in Israel and Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan were suspended until 0500 GMT due to the “current situation”, a spokesman told AFP. Lufthansa subsidiary Austrian Airlines also decided as a “precautionary measure” to suspend flights to Jordan’s capital Amman, as well as Erbil and Tel Aviv on Friday “to comprehensively reassess the security situation”. “Austrian Airlines continuously monitors and assesses the security situation in the Middle East and is in close contact with the authorities,” Austrian Airlines said in a statement sent to AFP. World leaders called for de-escalation, after United States media quoted officials saying Israel had carried out retaliatory strikes on Iran, after the Islamic republic’s missile and drone attack against Israel. Both Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines have already suspended their flights to and from Tehran up until the end of the month.

  14. Huge blast at military base used by Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces, sources say By Reuters April 19, 20245:52 PM CDTUpdated an hour ago BAGHDAD, April 20 (Reuters) - A huge blast rocked a military base used by Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) to the south of Baghdad late on Friday, two PMF and two security sources told Reuters. The two security sources said the blast was a result of an unknown airstrike, which happened around midnight Friday. The two PMF sources pointed out the strikes did not lead to casualties but caused material damage. PMF sources said the strikes targeted a headquarters of the PMF at the Kalso military base near the town of Iskandariya around 50 km south of Baghdad. Government officials did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The PMF started out as a grouping of armed factions, many close to Iran, that was later recognized as a formal security force by Iraqi authorities. Factions within the PMF took part in months of rocket and drone attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq amid Israel’s Gaza campaign but ceased to do so in February.

If there was ever a politician that could answer a question directly ANYWHERE in the world without dodging, tap dancing, line dancing, strategic ballerina trippy toes spinning around the podium, foxtroting & all around jitter bugging and sand bagging an issue I think I'd fall into a coma. Ever heard a bureaucrat answer (to a simple question) Yes or No without running his/her mouth FIRST, an still not a Yes or a No in there...
  17. REMEMBER, no one really knows what will happen, or when. They're simply stating their opinions based on what they perceive to be happening in Iraq... So, take everything with a grain of salt ... RON Pimpy Article Quote: "Removing zeros off the Iraqi Dinar can indeed impact liquidity issues in Iraq. By re-denominating the currency and removing zeros, the Central Bank of Iraq aims to reduce transaction costs and make it easier for people to carry less physical money. With a lower denomination, larger amounts can be replaced with fewer notes...This can potentially enhance liquidity management within the country's financial system." So the deletion of the zeros could help Iraq with their liquidity issues...

  19. × TÜRKİYE, ECONOMY, MIDDLE EAST Türkiye aims to reach $20 billion in exports to Iraq through Development Road Project ‘Project expected to positively impact exports to Iraq, logistics capacity,’ says Turkish trade minister Seda Tolmac |19.04.2024 - Update : 19.04.2024 ANKARA Ankara aims to reach $15 billion in exports to Iraq in the near future, and $20 billion in 2030 with the completion of the landmark Development Road Project connecting the Persian Gulf with Türkiye, Omer Bolat, Türkiye’s trade minister, told Anadolu. With the project starting at the al-Faw Grand Port in Basra, Iraq one of the major topics, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on April 22 will make his first foreign visit following the March 31 local elections to Iraq’s capital Baghdad. The visit is expected to shape economic and trade ties between the two countries, as well as political, diplomatic, and security-related issues. Bolat stressed that Iraq stands out in terms of its economic and trade relations with Türkiye, and that the Turkish share of exports to Iraq over the last decade has been 5% and above. Last year Iraq was Türkiye’s third-largest export destination by country, he said. The trade volume between the two countries was at $24.2 billion in 2022, and $19.9 billion in 2023, he added. “Exports to Iraq fell 7.2% year-on-year in 2023 to $12.8 billion, and imports from Iraq decreased 31.1% to $7.2 billion during the same period,” he said. “The foreign trade balance was in favor of Türkiye, as our foreign trade surplus was at $5.6 billion last year,” he added. Bolat said exports rose 24.5% to $3.4 billion on an annual basis in the first three months of 2024, while imports plummeted 46.2% to $835 million. He stated three trade pacts are planned to be signed between the countries’ trade ministries during Erdogan’s visit. ‘Project to boost exports to target countries’ Bolat said the Development Road Project aims to facilitate trade, customs, visa, and transit procedures in transportation between the Gulf countries and Europe. He said the project is set to be built in 2025-2029, and the railroads and land roads are planned to be in operation in 2030, saying: “For the Development Road Project, some 1,176 kilometers (731 miles) of railroads suitable for high-speed freight trains and passenger trains will be constructed, as well as 1,190 km (740 mi) of highways. The project is estimated to positively impact Turkish exports to Iraq and our logistics capacity, as the roads are planned to pass through various provinces of Iraq, the city of Al-Anbar, and the Persian Gulf.” “The project is expected to stimulate exports to the Middle East and Gulf regions, as well as Southeast Asian countries, and have a positive impact on our export figures,” he added. Bolat said the project will also influence Türkiye’s exports to target countries, as it will help fulfil the greatly important Far Countries Strategy. Eliminating security concerns in region to open new horizons to expand trade ties On efforts to open the Ovakoy border gate between the two countries, he said: “It is clear that the Ibrahim Khalil border crossing is insufficient to meet the trade volume between Türkiye and Iraq, so negotiations with Iraqi authorities are continuing to open the Ovakoy-Fishabur border gate.” Eliminating security concerns in the region will open new horizons for the two countries to expand trade ties, which would in turn achieve important progress for the Development Road Project, Bolat said
  20. Explosion at Iraqi base causes large fire Three soldiers reported wounded as Popular Mobilisation Forces group blames explosion on US air strike The National Apr 19, 2024 Listen In English Listen in Arabic Powered by automated translation An explosion occurred at a military base in Iraq early on Saturday, causing a large fire. The Popular Mobilisation Forces department in Babil province, south of Baghdad, said that an air strike had hit Kalsu base. Images on social media showed a large blaze at the site. Muhanad Al Enizi, member of Babil Provincial Council, said in a statement that three soldiers had been wounded. “There were at least five explosions, probably from drone strikes against Hashid Al Shaabi sites," he said. READ MORE Al Sudani says he does not want Iraq involved in broader conflict The base reportedly houses PMU, Iraqi army and federal police forces. The PMF claimed the US was behind the strike. US Central Command did not immediately comment. The US conducted a series of strikes on targets in Iraq and Syria following attacks on American troops in the region. But there have been no attacks on US troops since early February so a sudden strike that would break that relative calm appeared, on its face, to be an unlikely escalation. The reported air strike comes as Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani is concluding a visit to Washington during which he discussed plans for the withdrawal of US and allied troops from the country.
