Parliament elects head of Human Rights Committee

Saturday, February 5th 2011 3:24 PM

Baghdad, Feb. 5 (AKnews) – Salim al-Jabbouri, a Central Alliance deputy, was unanimously elected today to head the parliamentary Human Rights Committee and Ahrar bloc MP Khalid Naeem was elected to take the vice-presidency.

Speaking at a press conference following the 29th parliamentary session that was held today, Jabbouri said that the committee would focus on maintaining the constitutional principles of democracy, guaranteeing freedom of expression, ensuring peaceful means and assuring the rights of those on low-incomes, victims of military and terrorist violence and prisoners, as well as investigating abuses of law enforcement.

“The committee identified during its first meeting its policy and how to achieve the activation and protection of human rights principles enlisted within the Constitution,” he said.

The committee’s immediate priorities, he said will be “addressing the issue of displaced persons, and the rights of women and young people”.

Jabbouri emphasized the importance of maintaining an “open door” policy while conducting “dialogue with everyone in cooperation with international organizations and staying close to the people”.
