BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Global Finance magazine on Wednesday (August 22, 2018) named the governor of the Central Bank of Iraq, Ali Al-Alak, as the 30 most important banker in the world after his efforts to develop the banking sector.

"Global Finance has been evaluating the performance of central bank governors in all countries around the world since 1994," the magazine said in a report titled Global Bank Governors.

For his part, the editor of Global Finance magazine, Joseph Giarabutu, said in the report that "the assessment was based on the central bankers to cope with the storms and challenges facing the economy of their countries as a result of political and security turmoil and who struggled to stabilize the economy of their countries," noting that " Central bank governors from A to F. " 

"The advanced positions were occupied by central bankers who succeeded in tackling inflation, stabilizing the currency, managing interest rates and achieving economic growth goals," he said. 

According to the report, the governor of the Central Bank of Iraq, Ali al-Alaq ranked 30th in the world and ninth in the Middle East, after the progress achieved this year, ranked in the ranking B after last year was ranked fourth in the ranking of four ranks, namely "D, C +, C, C - ".

Ali Al-Alak has been named the best governor of an Arab central bank for 2018 in a celebration held by the Union of Arab Banks in the French capital Paris last June.

The Central Banker Report Cards, published annually by Global Finance since 1994, grade the central bank governors of 85 key countries as well as the European Union, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the Bank of Central African States and the Central Bank of West African States For the first time, central bankers from the following countries and regions have been added to the list: Bahamas, the Bank of Central African States, the Central Bank of West African States, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, Georgia, and Trinidad and Tobago. Grades are based on an “A” to “F” scale for success in areas such as inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability and interest rate management. (“A” represents an excellent performance down through “F” for outright failure.) Subjective criteria also apply.
