A Beleaguered Erdogan Threatens to Pull Out of NATO

Trilateral-meeting-in-Ankara-April-4-201 Iran's President Hassan Rouhani, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russia's President Vladimir Putin clasp hands in Ankara at the start of a trilateral meeting on Syria, April 4, 2018

On Saturday, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned the US that it could lose a “strategic partner,” declaring a rally: “We only bow before God. It is wrong to try to punish Turkey for a priest who is here. I am addressing the US once again: it is a pity that you chose a pastor over your strategic partner in NATO. We will only do what justice demands.”

The Turkish president was referring to American pastor Andrew Brunson, who is accused of ties to Erdogan’s arch-nemesis, Muslim cleric Fetullah Gulen, who lives in exile in Pennsylvania, and whose extradition the Turks have been demanding on the grounds that he organized the 2016 coup attempt against the Erdogan regime. Brunson is facing 20 years in prison, where he would remain until the US surrenders Gulen.

The Turkish lira on Friday hit a record low following President Donald Trump’s announcement he was doubling US tariffs on Turkish metals. The currency is currently down 13.5% against the US dollar, after a brief 20% fall, resulting from a Trump tweet that declared, “Aluminum will now be 20% and Steel 50%,” and concluded: “Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!”

President Erdogan urged his people in a counter-tweet: “Change the euros, the dollars and the gold that you are keeping beneath your pillows into lira at our banks. This is a domestic and national struggle.”

Erdogan is also upset at the protection US coalition forces are providing the Kurds in Syria, against the invading Turkish army. He threatened the US with an “Ottoman slap” if they continue to stand in the way of the Turkish incursion into northwest Syria.

Turkey has already retaliated by making its commitment to its NATO membership ambiguous. In December it announced its plans to purchase $2 billion of Russian S-400 surface-to-air missiles, which are incompatible with NATO systems. The Turks have also restricted American use of the Incirlik Air Base. In response to Turkey’s tightening embrace of Russia, Congress slapped a hold on delivery of F-35s to the Turkish air force, for fear that the Russians would be invited to examine the world’s most advanced stealth warplane.

US to Slap New Sanctions on Turkey if It Refuses to Release US Pastor- Treasury

WORLD

U.S. pastor Andrew Brunson reacts as he arrives at his home after being released from the prison in Izmir, Turkey July 25, 2018

Turkey is poised to battle the current crisis by partnering with its allies, according to a top Turkish official.

US Treasury Secretary Mnuchin has pointed out that Washington is ready to impose a new batch of sanctions on Turkey if the country refuses to free detained American pastor Andrew Brunson.

"We have more that we are planning to do if they don't release him quickly," Mnuchin said during a meeting of President Donald Trump's cabinet.

Turkey intends to get over an economic downturn, caused by the US actions, together with its allies, including Russia, according to Turkish Foreign Minister Berat Albayrak, who Thursday addressed over 6,000 international investors in a video conference.

Pence Demands Turkey Release Jailed US Pastor Brunson, Warns of Consequences

"The US introduced sanctions against a plethora of states around the world. In response to such moves, it is necessary to take well-coordinated joint steps. Turkey will overcome this together with Germany, Russia and China,"  the news portal Mynet cited the minister as saying. The official went on to express certainty that the republic will become even stronger while battling the downturn.

Last week, Trump announced a doubling of tariffs on imports of Turkish steel and aluminum in a tweet that contained an oblique reference to deteriorating relations between Washington and Ankara — a reference that was widely interpreted as further retaliation for Brunson's detention. Turkey has so far rejected Washington's latest appeal for the release of Brunson and imposed retaliatory duties on US products.

The US pastor, who worked in Turkey for many years, was arrested two years ago for his alleged ties to the movement founded by Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara has accused of planning the 2016 failed military coup. Brunson was subsequently released from jail and placed under house arrest.

This makes no sense to me  Butifldrm.  The US Pastor is a pawn and an excuse for Erdogan to get tough with the US.  I don’t think he expected the US to impose sanctions on Turkey but now he can go running to Russia and Iran for help.  While we are at it we should boot him out of NATO.  If Iraq will RV their currency they will have one of the stronger currencies in the ME which may just be part of the plan.

Getting interesting folks.

Pitcher, there are threads within this site that explain the coup 2016.  The coup involved the Kurds, and many nationalists who despised Erdogen's whahhabism. Erdogen left for a vacation, the coup went down, Putin, notified Erdogen.  He was able to stop the coup, subsequently thousands were imprisoned.  To this day no one has really know of their demise.  Erdogen, blamed everyone, he shut off the electricity and food to Incerlik base turkey, he accused  U.S. Army Gen. J.F. Campbellof being involved.  Incerlik houses nukes! Can you imagine? This was a ver intense time.  Our men stationed over there had to kick out the windows to get air.  Why???, he wanted a Cleric here in the US named Muhammed Fethullah Gülen,  Erdogen, blamed him for organizing the coup and demanded his extradition trying to use his NATO powers.  He was never released from the US.  After weeks of turmoil, eventually all power was restores to the base.  So... Erdogens whole thing was that the US with their intelligence did not know of the coup?  Whether we did or not, he's wanted to extradite this guy forever.  So here comes the deal.  No Gulen, Turkey agrees to release the pastor for a Turkish women imprisoned in Israel.  Trump negotiates with Netanyahu. Israel releases the lion and Erdogen negates on the agreement.  IMO Trump is showing Erdogen who is BOSS!

NRT

Turkish Finance Minister Barat al-Bairaq said on Thursday that Ankara does not intend to seek support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to solve its currency crisis.

Al-Bayraq said in a press statement today (August 16, 2018) that "his country has to go to the International Monetary Fund to get support in the crisis of low lira," according to Reuters.

He added that Turkey will achieve its financial goals by cutting spending and will focus on attracting foreign direct investment.

The Emir of the State of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani had earlier announced a package of deposits and investment projects worth 15 billion dollars in Turkey, stressing the full support of Doha to Ankara.

US President Donald Trump announced a 50-percent charge on imports of aluminum and steel from Turkey, while the value of the Turkish lira fell to more than seven lira against one dollar before rising slightly later.

Iraqi planes bombard inside Damascus

The Iraqi air force carried out air raids on sites inside Damascus, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Defense.

Iraqi leaders said the recent air strikes killed a number of al-Qaeda militants who were planning attacks inside Iraq, while field sources said the raids targeted the organization's positions in the hybrid area and the two fields close to the Iraqi border.

The Iraqi army said in a statement, on Thursday, that "according to intelligence, these terrorists were killed planning criminal operations with explosive belts to target the innocent, during the next few days inside Iraq."

The outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Abadi, announced late last year, an end in the country and the «final victory», but the organization is still working from pockets close to the borders of Syria, and continued to ambush and carry out assassinations and bombings in Iraq.

The Iraqi army has carried out several air strikes against Da'ash in Syria since last year in coordination with the US-led international coalition.

Washington 's economy threatens Ankara and a new lira

Washington threatens Ankara and new lira

 Twilight News

US Treasury Secretary Stephen Menuchin said on Thursday that the United States was prepared to impose additional sanctions on Turkey if it did not release US pastor Andrew Branson.
"We have more to do if we do not release him quickly," Menuchin said at a cabinet meeting on Thursday.
The US threat is a new escalation in the tension between the two countries, in which US President Donald Trump has decided to double import duties on Turkish minerals.
The Turkish lira fell on Thursday evening after Menuchin's remarks.
The lira fell to 5.8561 against the dollar after rising earlier Thursday to 5.7 against the US currency.
The new drop in the currency came despite assurances by Turkish Finance Minister Birat al-Bayraq in his meeting with investors that his country would emerge from the crisis stronger, and a day after a Qatari pledge to invest $ 15 billion in Turkey.
The US threat is a new escalation in the tension between the two countries, in which US President Donald Trump has decided to double import duties on steel and aluminum.

Watch Patriotic Turks Smash, Flush, & Shoot iPhones To Boycott America

Profile picture for user Tyler Durden
Fri, 08/17/2018 - 04:15

As tensions soar between the US and Turkey, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for the country to boycott Silicon Valley tech companies. He specifically pointed out the Apple iPhone — a product he used during the 2016 Turkish coup d’état attempt to broadcast a message via FaceTime on national television.

“Every product that we buy in foreign currency from outside, we will produce them here and sell abroad,” Erdogan said during a speech given in Ankara, “We will boycott the electronics products of the US.”

He added, “If they have iPhone, there is Samsung on the other side. And we have our own telephone brands.”

The dispute between Presidents Trump and Erdogan seem to be stemming from the detainment of Andrew Brunson, an American evangelical pastor who has been accused of espionage and terrorism. Washington took swift action last week by doubling the steel and aluminum tariffs that the US had imposed on Turkey, which added fuel to the fire — crashing the Lira by more than 25 percent.

I have just authorized a doubling of Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum with respect to Turkey as their currency, the Turkish Lira, slides rapidly downward against our very strong Dollar! Aluminum will now be 20% and Steel 50%. Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!

In his speech on Tuesday, Erdogan said the tariffs were part of a large effort to collapse the country. “They do not refrain from using the economy as a weapon against us, as they tried in the areas of diplomacy, military or efforts for social and political instability,” he said.

Shortly after Erdogan blamed Trump for unleashing an economic assault on the country, patriotic Turks answered their president’s call by destroying American products and posting the videos on social media.

Turks used sledgehammers, handguns, and fire to destroy iPhones in a symbolic backing of their government.

One video shows a Turkish man smashing five iPhones with a sledgehammer while a group of boys holding the country’s flag shout “Allahu Akbar.” This video went viral on social media late Wednesday, which kicked off an iPhone-bashing trend around the country.

Baghdad -
The Iraqi Trade Bank has announced its suspension of plans to buy a commercial bank in Turkey , confirming that it monitors the status of the Turkish lira.

"The bank has suspended plans to buy a commercial bank in Turkey because of the sharp decline in the Turkish lira," Reuters quoted the chairman of the Iraqi Trade Bank Faisal Al-Hims as saying.

"Turkey is a very important market for Iraq and we want to study the situation before it enters," he said. "The Turkish lira is unstable and we are monitoring the situation to see if it will stabilize before entering."

"The Iraqi Trade Bank would prefer to enter Turkey through an acquisition and it was discussing the purchase of a Turkish commercial bank," he said, adding that "the Commercial Bank will serve as a commercial arm of Iraq in Turkey and facilitate exports from Iraq to Turkey."

The Iraqi government-owned bank, with assets of about $ 20 billion, is responsible for supporting about 80 percent of Iraq's trade finance activities. Homs said the bank was seeking to expand its foothold in Turkey, Iraq's biggest trading partner.

The Turkish currency lost more than 40 percent of its value against the US dollar this year as investors worried about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan 's economic policies , as well as a recent diplomatic row between Turkey and the United States.

Turkish Lira turned to decline against the US dollar from a new US currency and exceeded the level of 6 pounds, with renewed concerns about the application of additional US sanctions against Ankara.
By 0920 GMT, the pound was down 3.5 percent at 6.0377 pounds against the dollar.
The local currency of Turkey saw a relative recovery in yesterday's session and rose more than 5% against its US counterpart, closing at the level of 5.8341 lira against the dollar.
The currency received a positive boost from a $ 15 billion injection of emergency investment from Qatar and the Banking Supervision and Regulatory Authority (CBRC) obligating banks not to exceed the 25% foreign exchange rate of the Lira in foreign currency.

A REAL Nail Biter For Sure!!!

The chess pieces have moved around for a while with a gain in Turkey joining NATO in 1952 while the “arrangements” from 1962 likely had implications through the remainder of the USSR while post USSR hardware may have been stationed in Turkey as an “insurance policy” for a resurgent Russia in whatever form. The previous administration didn’t help any on ANY front and our strategic influences dwindled and may be the basis for the “misunderstandings” today. Well, fortunately, NO MORE!!! :backflip:

I don’t think the relations with the West will lose any more ground in Turkey due to the NATO alliance and may even improve for the West as Ole Recep gets clipped and brought to tow. I don’t think Ole Recep will jump the NATO ship ‘cause I think he’ll experience the “or else”!!! :o

Fitch: Turkey's actions are insufficient to support currency and economy

Fitch: Turkey's actions are insufficient to support currency and economy

17 August 2018 10:14 PM
From - Sally Ismail:

Mubasher: The credit rating agency "Fitch" that Turkey's policy makers need to enhance the credibility of their political actions and the independence of the central bank in addition to slowing growth if they are serious in restoring economic stability and sustainability.

The agency said in a report on Friday that the unfinished political response to the recent decline in the value of the Turkish lira is unlikely to stabilize the currency and the economy for a reasonable period of time, noting that Ankara must make greater efforts.

The Turkish lira fell to the lowest level in all transactions last Monday at 7.2362 pounds per dollar before recovering relatively in the next three sessions and then relegation in trading today with US threats.

According to the agency, Turkish efforts helped stabilize the local currency of Turkey, such as raising the central bank interest rate by 1.5% to a liquidity rate of one night 19.25% in addition to regulatory measures to limit the short sale of the pound as well as Qatar's commitment to inject investments of 15 billion Dollars in the country, although no further details are available.

The Turkish central bank has taken new measures this week that will limit speculation on the Turkish lira.

However, Fitch stressed that the unfinished response could not address the underlying causes of the lira decline, such as the large current account balance and external financing requirements, as well as the acceleration of inflation, which reached 15.9% in July, as well as the accumulation of foreign currency debt and deterioration The credibility of economic policymakers.

Such problems expose Turkey to global issues such as the strong US dollar and rising interest rates in the United States as well as trade wars, Fitch said.

The agency noted that such risks were the main reason behind Fitch's decision last month to reduce Turkey's sovereign rating to BB from BB + .

In order to restore the market, there will be a need for evidence of real commitment to the monetary policy of the leaders of Turkey, in addition to more details on the procedures of that policy.

US-Turkish relations have been under intense tension for the time being because of Ankara's detention of Andrew Bronson and refused to extradite him without receiving Fathullah Colin.

The United States has said it is ready to impose new sanctions against Turkey, while the Turkish Ministry of Trade has said it will respond to any new US tariffs.

Trump: Turkey has been a problem for a long time and the case of the pastor will not go unnoticed

The Turkish judiciary rejected another request for his release

The Turkish judiciary on Friday rejected a request for the release of US priest Andrew Branson, which could expose Ankara to further sanctions by Washington, especially as US threats mount. US President Donald Trump said the Branson case The detainee in Turkey will not pass unnoticed.

The court's lawyer, Jim Halafort, said the court had ruled Branson under house arrest, adding that he would appeal the decision after 15 days.

Trump also said that Turkey has been a problem for a long time. Adding that Turkey was acting very badly.

Branson, who lives in the Turkish coastal province of Izmir on terrorism charges, is being prosecuted and his case sparked a diplomatic crisis between Ankara and Washington that led to a record collapse in the value of the Turkish lira.

The United States has imposed sanctions on two Turkish ministers for the priest, and vowed on Thursday to impose further sanctions if not released.

Turkish security Branson was arrested in December 2016 and faces up to 15 years in prison for "committing crimes on behalf of terrorist groups," referring to banned Kurdish militants and Fathullah Gulen, who lives in the United States. The coup attempt in 2016.

In late July, Branson, 50, was released from a prison for "health problems" after a year and a half and placed under house arrest.

Donald Trump wants to break up NATO....and I support him, in that. Turkey doesn't belong in NATO, and millions of Turks have lived in Germany, for decades. Now that Islam is taking over Europe, the leaders of Europe have a big problem. There is a civil war coming to Europe. America pays most of the bills for NATO, and the governments of Europe let in millions of migrants, and hundreds of millions are planned. So all this means the American Taxpayer is paying for American troops, to keep law and order in Europe, while Islam takes over the continent. Trump is shrewd enough to see this coming, knows it's a bad deal for America, and is generally insane, and will end in war, so he wants to break up NATO, of which Turkey is a part of.

So Trump put pressure about the pastor, and steel and currency etc. He knew how horrible Turkey is on political dissent. That's part of the reason they don't belong in NATO....Turkey is run by Islamic fascists who want to take over Europe and get the Americans to provide security, while they do it. Donald Trump is not a fool and won't fall for it. He wishes to preserve Western culture.

The Cold War is long over. America is being played for being a sucker, as are the American taxpayer. Europe was vulnerable after WWII, needed our help, but those days are gone. Europe is rich now and can work out their own security arrangements, and pay for it. They don't need our help. And if Europe wants to let in hundreds of millions of Muslim refugees, I say let them. American troops should not die, to protect Europe, from the coming Muslim invasion. American taxpayers should not be sent the bill for it all.

NATO should have ended 25 years ago. No one had the guts to do it.

Right wingers have to admit their share of the guilt in this: They support the military, as do I. But this means a lot of money at stake, and jobs. And when we had a real enemy to defeat: the Soviet Union, then I supported a lot of military spending. But now? No reason for NATO, no reason to pay rich European country's security and military bills. No reason for American taxpayer to pay for Islam to take over Europe. That's just bloody insane.

I still want a strong military, and lots of money for it, lots of jobs. But I don't want America part of Europe, because what NATO is up to, is crazy. Our troops can be used in other places, to stabilize them, and build complex Space Defense Forces....like President Trump said.

The Standard & Poor's credit rating agency downgraded Turkey's sovereign credit rating to a deeper non-investment category, citing sharp currency fluctuations and economic growth is expected to contract next year .

The agency has cut the credit rating of Turkey on Friday, August 17, one degree to + B of -BBand kept the outlook for Turkey is stable, in a move that came after losing the Turkish lira about 40 percent of its value against the US dollar this year .

S & P said that the rating downgrade reflects our expectations that the sharp swings of the Turkish lira and the resulting sharp adjustment in the balance of payments will undermine Turkey's economy. We expect a recession next year .

It also predicted that inflation would reach a peak of 22 percent over the next four months. "The weakness of the lira will put pressure on the corporate sector and it has greatly increased the risk of financing Turkish banks . "

"The Turkish currency fell by 12:56 GMT to 6,2002 lira to the dollar, down by 6.28 percent, after closing on Thursday at 5,8150 liras per dollar," the Bloomberg news agency reported.

Bolton: The crisis with Turkey ends «immediately» the release of the pastor
Thursday, 23 August 2018 Source: Al-Anbaa - capitals - agencies Views 603
Said John Bolton , the security adviser to the US National President Donald Trump: The Ankara committed «big mistake» not to release a detained American priest has Andrew Branson on charges related to terrorism.

Bolton confirmed in an interview with Reuters during his visit to Israel that Ankara could end the crisis in which the lira "immediately" the release of Rev. Branson, pointing out that «pumping country funds will not help the Turkish economy».

Meanwhile, the lawyer of the US pastor, who is on trial in Turkey on terrorism charges, said he planned to appeal to the Constitutional Court to seek the release of his client after a lower court rejected the petition last week.

"As soon as the Supreme Court rejects the written refusal, we will file a petition to the Constitutional Court," lawyer Ismael Jim Halafort told Turkish daily Hurriyet. Once all domestic legal means had been exhausted, the defense would, if necessary, submit a petition to the European Court of Human Rights.

"We hope for the Constitutional Court, but if he refuses (the petition) there, we will go to the European Court of Human Rights without hesitation." According to a copy of the Supreme Court ruling in Izmir which rejected the petition, evidence collection is still ongoing and there is a possibility that the priest would flee the country if the petition is accepted.

Invite a few Turkish diplomats to the White House and then throw them in jail for terrorism. Trade the Pastor and his attorney for the diplomats.  If that doesn’t work order all American citizens in Turkey to leave the country. After a few weeks start rounding up all Turks in the US with Visas and lock them up or deport them.

This entire story is rubbish and designed to make Erdogan look tough against the US. Very unnecessary imo
