Security forces open fire at protesters in Basra

 

Iraqi security forces fired live ammunition and tear gas to disperse anti-corruption protests in Basra, a local source told The Baghdad Post on Wednesday.

The protesters make it more difficult to form a new government.

The High Commission for Human Rights said Sunday that 13 protesters were killed in clashes with security forces and 269 were injured.

A security source said that about 460 personnel were also injured.

Reports also confirmed that about 757 protesters were arrested noting that most of them were then released.

He pointed out that the best solution to end the crisis of protests, is the rapid response by the local governments in Basra, and the federal Baghdad, to the demands of the demonstrators, stressing the need to pay attention to files of services and appointments and hold accountable corrupt officials.

The Imam of the mosque Zubayr that this response if it will strengthen confidence between the government and the masses, and helps to unite the row, and end all manifestations of spasm in the Iraqi street.

This comes at a time when the local authorities in Basra for the start of the implementation of a security plan in conjunction with the start of Eid al-Adha, according to a police officer in Basra, told the "new Arab" that the plan began Tuesday in the areas where the Eid was announced and will start tomorrow in other areas, Adding that police, army, intelligence, national security and civil defense forces would participate in the security plan.

He pointed out that the plan included the conduct of security patrols, the installation of mobile checkpoints, as well as the tightening of security measures near markets and commercial gatherings.


 

It is noteworthy that Eid al-Adha announced Tuesday in some areas of southern Iraq because of the multiplicity of religious references, while other areas celebrate Eid on Wednesday.

In the context, stressed Khatib mosque Mustafa in Baghdad, Mohammed Khalil, the need to accelerate the formation of the new government, explaining during the Eid sermon that the next government is required to listen to the voices of demonstrators, and respond to what they want.

"The first thing the government should think about quickly is to deal seriously with protests by meeting demands," he said.

In the meantime, the Iraqi capital Baghdad witnessed tight security procedures in conjunction with the first day of Eid al-Adha.

A source in the Iraqi Interior Ministry said that the security forces tightened procedures at the entrances of the capital, pointing to the "new Arab" to the spread of security intensively in the streets of Baghdad, especially at the parks, markets and shopping centers.
