Million-man demonstration expected in Iraqi capital, southern provinces

M.ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Thousands of Iraqis are expected to take to the streets in the country’s capital of Baghdad and several southern provinces on Friday to demand better services from the al-Dawa Islamic Party-led government.

Kurdistan 24 correspondent Soran Kamaran, reporting from Baghdad, said the Iraqi government had deployed a significant amount of military and police forces in various areas of the capital, particularly, around Tahrir Square.

Activists have called for a million-man demonstration as the Iraqi government prepares extra forces in anticipation of the protests at Tahrir Square and other areas of the Iraqi capital, Kamaran said.

The activists are mostly relying on Telegram as the Iraqi government has blocked the most widely used social media outlet, Facebook, across the country.

Protests are also expected to be held in eight other provinces in southern Iraq. Demonstrators demand an improvement in public services such as water and electricity as well as an end to unemployment.

Sheikh Abu Karar al-Abadi, the representative of the protesters in Basra Province, told Kurdistan 24 during a live interview that they have formed a delegation to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and deliver the demands of the protesters to the government.

Abu Karar said the people’s demands are legitimate and must be respected to avoid an escalation of tensions.

Shwan Jabari, a Kurdistan 24 correspondent in Basra, said the protests in the area are ongoing, adding that people had gathered in the city center because the government has yet to respond to their demands.

The Iraqi Security Media Center, meanwhile, announced on Thursday that the security situation in Baghdad and other provinces is under control. It added that protests should only be held with approval and facilitation from the government and just in designated areas.

In a tweet on Thursday, influential Iraqi Shia cleric and leader of the Sairoon Coalition Muqtada al-Sadr called on the political parties in Iraq to suspend talks over the formation of the next Iraqi government.

Sadr, using a hash-tag which translates to “the people’s revolution is a right,” also called for the formation of a serious working cell within the government in coordination with the protesters to implement their demands.

I agree.  They can go after Maliki but from what I’ve read and seen from videos those protests were anything but peaceful.  Do you remember the “peaceful” march a few years ago in Dallas where 4 police officers were murdered.  How about the “ peaceful” marches during President Trumps Inauguration that resulted in looting and fire bombing of local businesses.  Whenever you get a large group of agitated people marching you can almost always expect trouble.  Abadi was trying to

Called for civil activists to mobilize for large-scale demonstrations in the capital Baghdad, today, starting from Tahrir Square towards the Green Zone to sit in front of it, while the Baghdad Operations Command confirmed that it fully secured the capital after being divided into 6 security breakouts.
Dozens of activists fired calls through social networking sites in Iraq, which continue to witness continuous interruptions despite being brought back to service under pressure from the street to rally to angry demonstrations on Friday, recalling the demonstrations that began about two years ago, The first targeted the parliament and tampering with its contents in April 2015, and the other targeted the building of the Secretariat of the Council of Ministers during the month of May of the same year.
A source in the Baghdad Operations Command said in a press statement yesterday that "the capital of Baghdad is fully insured and its parties after dividing it into 6 security breakers." He pointed out that "elements called the shadow men are linked to intelligence and will be deployed in the belt areas." The source explained that «Baghdad Operations Command succeeded in reassuring the population and address those who are trying to tamper with their security, while securing the capital tightly in cooperation with the forces of the federal police and the anti-terrorism (entrusted to protect and secure Baghdad International Airport) and the support of the intelligence services and national security and under the supervision of Operations Command ».
He stressed that «the protection of the Baghdad belt is through the extensive intelligence network and the pursuit and arrest of sleeper belt cells through the shadow men, and will be installed 30 thousand surveillance cameras in the belt areas, with the erection of control towers equipped with night thermal cameras to secure the capital and belt».
The leader of the Sadrist movement Moqtada al-Sadr during a meeting at his headquarters in the city of Najaf yesterday, the United Nations representative in Iraq Jan Kubic, to suspend consultations on the formation of the next Iraqi government until the demands of the protesters are resolved. The Shiite cleric predicted that the religious authority in Najaf, represented by Supreme Leader Ali al-Sistani, would issue directives to the demonstrators, stressing the maximum commitment and discipline in respect of non-infringement of public money, with demonstrations demanding rights. The Shiite cleric Fadhil al-Quraishi told Asharq Al-Awsat that "the position of the religious authority represented by Supreme Leader Ali al-Sistani was clear, supporting the demonstrations, but on condition and conditions, by peaceful commitment and non-infringement of public money represented by public and private establishments, Security, which is supposed to be the task of protecting demonstrators ».
Al-Quraishi added that "the support of the reference to the demonstrations comes from being a legitimate right and demands legitimate demands, but the demands must be met by legitimate methods. In case of confrontations or mutual attacks between the demonstrators and the security forces, the demonstrations will emerge from their natural context, To be lost because of the demands for which the demonstrators came out, a huge shortage of services, which reflects an accumulated failure since 2003 »."The events of last week, which witnessed a serious escalation in the face of confrontations, arrests and the fall of martyrs and wounded, can not pass unnoticed, and therefore through our follow-up vision of the reference, it is at the time," Qureishi said. Continue to support the demonstrations as a legitimate and guaranteed right of the Iraqi constitution, they will issue clear instructions towards the adoption of peaceful; because any unjustified escalation will derail the demonstrations, which is not satisfied by the reference as a safety valve for all ».
Moqtada al-Sadr stressed during his meeting with the representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jan Kubic, the need to meet the demands of the demonstrators, calling at the same time to suspend talks on forming a government until the resolution of the demands of the demonstrators. During the meeting between Sadr and Kubic discussed the general situation in the country and the issue of demonstrations. Sadr called on the United Nations to play its role in support of Iraq and its stability. As for the position of the alliance «Saron», which is sponsored by Muqtada al-Sadr, which ranked first in the elections that took place last May by obtaining 54 seats, the spokesman of the coalition, Dr. Qahtan Jubouri, told «Middle East», that «the current demonstrations are The expression of the legitimate right of the Iraqi citizen, as well as it is guaranteed constitutionally, and the address is clear, namely the demand for basic services such as water and electricity, and therefore no party can have a view other than support these demonstrations and stand by its side with emphasis on the peaceful side and not allow parties and parties Which wants to cultivate sedition Wa
On the path of formation of the next government, al-Jubouri said that "the opinion of (s) is clear from the beginning, which is to focus on the government program before the people," noting that "whoever agrees with us in the context of this program will be welcome, otherwise we are not part of any understandings Based on the nomination of this person or that before the completion of programs that are only give us a road map for the right change that we all seek, and the departure of people to demonstrate today, but evidence of the absence of vision and plans during the past periods ».

Iraq: Angry protesters close border crossing with Iran

Archives

Archives
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Dozens of Iraqi demonstrators , angry at "poor services and lack of jobs," closed a main road in the southern province of Maysan on Thursday, leading to the border with Iran.
The protestors gathered in the area of "Masharh" south of the city of Amara, the capital of Maysan, and stopped traffic for a few hours towards the port, "gray," according to the Anatolia correspondent.
The demonstrators held banners calling for the authorities to provide services to the region, which suffers from repeated water and electricity shortages and high unemployment.
The first lieutenant in the police of Maysan, Karim al-Asadi, Anatolia, said security reinforcements arrived in the area, and removed the demonstrators from the road, and arrested a number of them against the backdrop of their rejection of the instructions of the security forces.
He explained, "Asadi" that the security forces have guidance to prevent any demonstration causing confusion in traffic, or an attempt to storm government institutions.
As the protests continued in southern Iraq, the federal government decided on Thursday to provide more jobs and support the economic side in Dhi Qar province, south of the country.
The decision came after a meeting of Prime Minister Haider Abadi, with representatives of the province of Dhi Qar in the capital Baghdad, according to a statement by the Office of Abadi.
In terms of security, the Iraqi army reported that its forces impose control over all cities, including the south, which is witnessing protests .
"The security situation is well controlled by the security forces in Baghdad and the provinces," Brigadier Yahya Rasul, a spokesman for the security center, said in a statement seen by Anatolia.
"You have the right to demonstrate because the constitution guarantees it, and there are dedicated places, coordination and approvals required before the demonstrations begin," he said.
This comes on the eve of the expected protests in the provinces of the south, as well as the capital Baghdad, in continuation of the massive demonstrations that began on the ninth of July, and was punctuated by violence that killed and wounded.
It is noteworthy that the government took last week, decisions to contain the protests, including the allocation of government jobs and funds for the province of Basra, and plans to implement service projects in the short and medium term, but protesters say the measures "not commensurate with the size of the demands."
Last Tuesday, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he had directed the security forces in his country to protect the safety of citizens and to prevent any attack on public property.
The government says that "saboteurs" exploit the protests to target public property, and is intent on addressing them.
For many years, Iraqis have been protesting poor public services and rampant corruption in a country that annually receives tens of billions of dollars in revenue from the sale of oil. (Anatolia).

"Recent developments have necessitated the opening of serious channels of dialogue with the demonstrators and the suspension of Internet service, which constitutes an arbitrary measure of the freedom of information and causes great economic and administrative damage," he said in a statement.
"We have followed the course of recent spontaneous protests in all regions of the south and center of the country, which have expressed the people's continuing anger at the spread of unemployment and the deterioration of public services and the basic of electricity and water and a terrible decline in the level of education and health services and worsening the situation of corruption and impunity."
"It is a matter of losing citizens' trust in the state and all the promises of officials," he said.
He pointed out that "the continuation of the protests on a daily basis was in the hope of solving the problems, but it was met with live bullets, tear gas, water cannons, the death of more than 15 demonstrators in different cities and wounding dozens of them as well as arbitrary arrests, including hundreds of demonstrators and activists in particular."
The coalition confirmed that "the media documented the friendly relationship between the peaceful protesters and the security services that were protecting the demonstrators, but the development of events showed that there are orders to use excessive violence such as bullets, electric sticks, batons and even torture during demonstrations and arrest."
"These brutal acts are contrary to the constitution and the law, where they were arrested without judicial orders," he said.
The coalition called on the prime minister to "investigate the killing of 15 demonstrators and hold those responsible accountable, while compensating the families of the martyrs and canceling the orders of qualitative arrests against demonstrators and activists."
He also called for "directing security forces to protect demonstrators and peaceful gatherings as a legitimate right guaranteed by the constitution."
He stressed the need to "stop wearing security elements in civilian clothes in order to deflect demonstrations against their peacefulness."
He also called for "condemnation of armed groups using violence against demonstrators."
He stressed the need to "bring corrupt adults in front of the judiciary to hold them accountable and recover looted money by them to the state treasury and accelerate the implementation of serious projects that meet the demands of demonstrators."

He also stressed the need to "stop blocking the Internet service, which constitutes an arbitrary measure of the freedom of information and also causes great economic and administrative damage."
"Building the country's stability and prosperity will not be achieved without guaranteeing the needs of young people and their real participation in the political process in particular, and we should not forget that they sacrificed their lives to liberate Iraq from a terrorist gang," he said.

Najaf airport ... The first place to turn Iraqi demonstrations full of corruption

The Najaf International Airport was  the first place to reach the hands of disgruntled demonstrators on the living conditions in southern Iraq, causing damage to it and stopped it from work before returning aircraft to fly and landing again gradually since last Monday.

Which led to the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi to respond quickly to one of the most prominent demands of protesters in the city of Najaf, the solution to the management of its international airport, after years of controversy over the management of the airport And the control of political parties and the existence of financial irregularities in the large work and demand employment opportunities for the residents of the town.

As the protests continued to decline in recent days, the repercussions of the airport's intrusion continued last Friday. The demonstrations opened the file of corruption in one of Iraq's most famous airports, which has been plagued by corruption since its opening nearly ten years ago. Companies owned by most of the benefits of the airport starting from the taxi transport company to the markets and cafes spread within.

The decision of the government to dissolve the administration of the airport is the second of its kind. In November, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi issued a decision to dissolve the Najaf airport administration board. The Civil Aviation Authority will temporarily manage and operate the airport and refer all files to the Integrity Commission and Diwan Financial control, but the airport administration refused to implement the resolution supported by its position with armed militias and religious parties, most notably the Ba'abir and Sadr and the Sadrists and the Dawa Party led by Nuri al-Maliki and the Supreme Council.

The administration of the airport consists of six members of equal authority and each member represents a party in the city, all of the religious parties.

Observers say that the Prime Minister to thank the demonstrators in Najaf as they were the main factor  pressing on the management of the airport to accept his decision to resign and not cling to the post.

On 20 July 2008, the airport was officially opened to receive incoming flights to Najaf. The airport is located east of the city of Najaf, one of the most important cities in Iraq. It was built on a former military air base, which includes the airport terminal and two passenger terminals to deliver passengers to the plane by bus. The terminal also has offices for airlines, services, parking lots, a control tower, two air cargo terminals and senior visitors, operated by Aqeeq Aviation Services Holding.

The average number of trips to and from Najaf is 19 per day and at times of visits, doubling to 60 per day. The airport receives many types of aircraft. At Najaf Airport there is currently one runway with a length of 3,000 meters and is considered one of the lowest rated airports in the world.

One of the main problems facing the airport was the small parking space with the momentum of the airlines wishing to operate. The project began to expand the arena to accommodate 14 aircraft after it had only 4 parking spaces and also to develop the passenger lounge to accommodate the largest number of passengers arriving and departing.

According to leaky reports from the Integrity Commission, more than half of the airport's revenues go to political and partisan parties or armed factions such as the Udayb and the Saraya al-Salam.

The board of directors of the airport is considered to be the most involved in corruption casesThose who are usually representing their parties, but the pressures and political considerations prevent their submission to the Iraqi judiciary.

One of the most prominent files of corruption at the airport, reconstruction and reconstruction contracts, which amounted to the declared $ 72 million, while it was found that the cost was only 22 million dollars and several years of rehabilitation, according to informed sources.

According to a local official in the Najaf provincial council of the "New Arab", the dismissal of the administration of the airport would stop a large section of corruption. "According to the law, the revenues of the land or air port in the province and an important resource such as Najaf airport were not for the people of Najaf but for the parties and the militias," said the official, who declined to be named.

He pointed out that the airport profits of at least $ 100 million annually, and such a figure would promote important sectors such as health, education and other aspects.

Last Friday, the Minister of Transport Kazem Vajan al-Yamami said last Monday that Najaf airport has returned to receive international flights since Sunday flight from Beirut airport, and then announced the airlines to return to the airport, including Royal Jordanian Airlines confirmed that its flights Between Amman and the city of Najaf will return to normal from Thursday.

Activists on social networking sites circulated a previous statement issued by the religious authority regarding the demands of the demonstrators, in line with the protests expected today and their approval on Friday .

The document issued by the office of the supreme religious authority Ali al-Sistani, in February 2011, during the protests that took place in Iraq after the events of the "Arab Spring" in 2011, and included most of the current demands put forward and demanded by the protesters in the demonstrations that took place in the provinces of the south and center during the days Past.

The statement issued by the authority stressed the abolition of the unacceptable privileges granted to former and current members of the House of Representatives, provincial councils and senior officials in the government, and stressed the need to work to achieve the legitimate demands of the people, while warned against the consequences of continuing the current approach to the State Administration.

The presidential decree issued a decree two days ago, requiring the transfer of 328 deputies from the previous parliamentary session to retirement, and ratified the Law of the House of Representatives and its Formations No. (13) of 2018, where the presidential decree raised a wide controversy because he except the policeman of age and service of the inclusion of deputies to retire.

It is worth mentioning that activists called earlier to go out in uniform demonstrations on Friday in all provinces, where the religious authority receives its vision of the latest situation during the Friday sermon, which can also address the demands of protesters, is expected to see the liberation square in central Baghdad, Strict security

Angry protesters close border access between Iraq and Iran

Angry protesters close border crossing between Iraq and Iran

 Twilight News

Thousands of Iraqi protesters angry over "poor services and lack of jobs" have closed a major route in Maysan province leading to the border port of Shib with Iran.
The protesters gathered in the area of "Mashreh" south of the city of Amara, the capital of Maysan, and stopped traffic for a few hours towards the port of "gray".
The demonstrators held banners demanding the authorities to provide services to the region, which suffers from repeated water and electricity shortages, and high unemployment.
As the protests continued in southern Iraq, the federal government decided to provide more jobs and support the economic side in Dhi Qar province, south of the country.
The decision came after a meeting of the Prime Minister, Haider Abadi, with representatives of the province of Dhi Qar in the capital Baghdad, according to a statement by the Office of Abadi.
In terms of security, the Iraqi army reported that its forces are taking control of all cities, including the south, which is witnessing protests.
"The security situation is well controlled by the security forces in Baghdad and the provinces," Brigadier Yahya Rasul, spokesman for the security center, said in a statement.
He addressed the "Messenger" protesters by saying: "You have the right to demonstrate; because the Constitution ensured, and there are places dedicated and coordination and approvals are required before the start of demonstrations."
This comes in conjunction with the expected protests in the provinces of the south, as well as the capital Baghdad, in continuation of the massive demonstrations that began on the ninth of July, and was punctuated by violence that killed and wounded.
Last week, the government took decisions to contain the protests, including the allocation of government jobs and funds for the province of Basra, and plans to implement service projects in the short and medium term, but protesters say the measures "do not match the size of the demands."
Last Tuesday, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he had directed the security forces in his country to protect the safety of citizens and to prevent any attack on public property.
The government says that "saboteurs" exploit the protests to target public property, and is intent on addressing them.
For many years, Iraqis have been protesting against poor public services and rampant corruption in a country that annually receives tens of billions of dollars in revenue from selling oil.

The Coordination Committees of the demonstrations called for a protest in Tahrir Square in Baghdad on Friday evening, to support the demands of the southern provinces, which is also preparing for mass demonstrations, to demand to accelerate the improvement of the living and service conditions of citizens.
According to sources familiar with the Twilight News, the committees called for the gathering in Tahrir Square in Baghdad at the sixth hour of the Friday afternoon.

The director of the Office of the High Commission for Human Rights Branch Basra, Mehdi Tamimi, has called on the Iraqi government and security forces to expedite the release of demonstrators who have not been proven to have committed any crime during the demonstrations in Basra.
Tamimi said in a statement that the Iraqi judiciary is cooperating on the subject of "the release of detainees from innocent demonstrators, demanding the legitimate rights as citizens," appealing at the same time security forces to stop the arrest of activists.
Earlier, cleric Moqtada al-Sadr called on all politicians to stop efforts to form a new Iraqi government until all the protesters' demands were met by improving services in the south.
Sadr said on Twitter in his first public comment on the protests sweeping the south: "All the political blocs winning in the current election to suspend all political dialogues for alliances and others until the completion of meeting the demands of the true protesters."

Washington: We support the right of protesters
In the same context, the United States confirmed its support of the right of Iraqis to protest peacefully, she said State Department spokeswoman Heather maneuvered, at a news conference: "We support the right of people to demonstrate peacefully, of course we understand that power outages and fuel shortages are troublesome things" .
"The Iraqi government has said it is keen on the right of citizens to demonstrate, and stressed its determination to do more to address the problems of protesters, including lack of services and electricity and economic opportunities as well."
More than a week ago, protests erupted in Basra to protest the rise in unemployment and poor services in the province, one of the richest provinces, for containing about 70 percent of Iraq's oil reserves.
Similar to the demonstrations in Basra, protests in other southern provinces, such as Najaf and Dhi Qar, have escalated, due to poor public services and rampant corruption.

South protesters waving the & quot; open sit & quot; If their demands are not met

On Friday morning, protests were renewed in several cities in southern Iraq, despite the massive security and military deployment imposed by the government since last night, following calls by activists, dignitaries and dignitaries of the southern Iraqi community to demonstrate and reject government promises.

A local source in the province of Maysan (southern Iraq) that hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the town of morgue south of the province, noting that the protesters cut the main road leading to the port of Shaib, which links Iraq with Iran.

The source pointed out that the protesters chanted slogans condemning "corruption" in the local government in Maysan, the federal government in Baghdad, which caused the collapse of economic and service conditions in the province, demanding the provision of electricity, and improve the standard of living and eliminate unemployment rampant in the cities of Maysan.

The source pointed out that the demonstrators confirmed that they will continue their demonstrations until the fulfillment of the demands, waving the shift to open sit-in if the Iraqi authorities ignored their demands.

In Basra, the areas of Tuwaisah, Medina, Zubayr, Umm Qasr and Abu al-Khasayb witnessed similar demonstrations, while Karbala is witnessing large gatherings of citizens in preparation for the demonstration.

Meanwhile, a member of the Office of the Human Rights in Iraq, Fadhil al-Gharawi, said that the Iraqi forces released 180 protesters in the province of Maysan were arrested earlier, noting that "the latest statistic obtained by the Commission indicated the release of 86 detainees from the demonstrators in Najaf , And the release of 70 demonstrators in Muthanna province.

Activists of the protests in southern Iraq said that the release of the demonstrators coincided with preparations for the start of mass demonstrations on Friday.

Said Haider Saadi, one of the organizers of the demonstrations in Maysan, said that Iraqi forces violated the Constitution when they arrested demonstrators, noting that "their release is a duty and not a gift."

"Saadi said that" the talk of the Iraqi authorities on the release of protesters held by it, which began since Thursday, is an attempt to absorb the anger of the Iraqi street, which is preparing to organize large-scale demonstrations on Friday. "

In the meantime, the Iraqi government sent large security reinforcements to Basra, the birthplace of the protest movement, and to other provinces including Muthanna, amid rising concerns about the authorities' tendency to tighten the grip and stifle security mobility.

There is a state of alert today to monitor the response to calls for unified demonstrations, especially after the demands of civil currents to postpone the demonstration, as well as the speech of the Supreme Shiite reference, led by Ali Sistani, a week after its support of the demonstrators and call the government to meet their demands.

The deputy for the province of Diwaniya Ali al-Badiri, yesterday, a sudden interruption of water from the province completely without knowing the reasons, warning of a "big" sedition is being prepared for it from external and internal.

On the other hand, activists in the province of Anbar (western Iraq), they are preparing to launch demonstrations in the province similar to the protests in the neighboring provinces.

Britain finances the polls in Iraq

Kuwait helps Iraq to meet an important demand for protests

London : As Iraqi protests renewed on Friday, Kuwait conducted one of the most important demands of the protesters by helping to provide electricity to the Iraqis by supplying their country with the fuel needed to operate the power plants. Funding the surveys in Iraq to know and understand the demands of job opportunities and fight corruption and activate the role of government in the provision of services where the reform is currently leading citizens' demands.

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced today that Kuwait will equip it with "kazuel" fuel for the operation of the power generating units stopped. "Under the direction of the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Oil will start supplying the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity with kerosene fuel to operate the suspended generating units and support the working units," the ministry said in a press statement.

A Kuwaiti barge loaded with 30,000 cubic meters of kazuel oil as a first batch will arrive at Basra ports on Saturday and the quantities will continue periodically over the next few days, it added.

This comes at a time witnessed by Iraqi provinces in the south and center of the country since the ninth of this month, demonstrations to demand better electricity service, especially with high temperatures and beyond the barrier of 50 degrees Celsius.

The Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah, assured Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Labadi of his country's support for Iraq in its current circumstances against the backdrop of the bloody protests currently taking place. He said during a phone call on July 16 that he hoped that "Iraq will prevail in security and peace, And to join all efforts in the pursuit of all good and good for him and his people and be able to overcome these conditions. "

He stressed Kuwait's readiness to provide all that would help Iraq during the coming period of construction, reconstruction and stability in addition to assistance in some projects, including water desalination in the southern province of Basra, which started the protests which are adjacent to its border with Kuwait and soon spread to other provinces in the south and center.

It is noteworthy that Iraq produces 15.7 thousand megawatts of electricity and imports from Iran 1200 megawatts in need of 23 thousand megawatts to ensure non-interruption of electricity for its citizens, where the rate of this interruption is currently 12 hours a day, especially after the Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardkanyan last week that His country has stopped exporting electricity and water entirely from Iraq. He pointed out in a press statement that continuing to supply Iraq with electricity and water would exacerbate the current situation in Iran on electricity cuts.

Talks in Tehran on Saturday failed to reach a solution to Iran's power crisis over Iraq, demanding Baghdad pay more than $ 1.5 billion in accumulated debts from electricity bills. Iran, demanding that Iraq pay more than $ 1.5 billion in accumulated debts from electricity bills, insists that payments are made in dollars, but the Iraqi government fears US sanctions could damage it if it deals with Tehran in hard currency and demands in exchange anything but the dollar.

Britain finances the polls in Iraq

In London, the British Stability and Security Fund in Iraq supported the Democratic Institute's conduct of independent public opinion surveys throughout the country.

The first poll of six polls to be conducted in Iraq related to job opportunities, fighting corruption, activating the role of the government and identifying the ceiling of demands on the next government to create jobs and provide services has been completed.

The results show that Iraqi men and women focus on the economic challenges of unemployment and corruption, look optimistically toward their future, and show that sectarianism generally loses its appeal. The results suggest that most Iraqis are willing to make concessions for the unity of the country.

He explains that although the security forces enjoy wide popular support, the confidence of citizens in institutions and governance structure is very low. After the recent elections there is a real chance to form a comprehensive government representing all parties. The Iraqis believe that the central and local governments need to be more responsive and effective in meeting the needs of citizens and should inform the public about what they are doing. The basic conditions for perseverance and long-term development.

The project, run by the Democratic Institute of Iraq, aims to help the Iraqi government, civil society and the international community to monitor and understand the situation in Iraq and to better understand and respond to the needs of citizens as they evolve over the long term.

The first poll was conducted between February and April 2018 by conducting 1,450 face-to-face interviews with respondents throughout Iraq.

The British National Democratic Institute (NDI) is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that works to support and promote democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation and a culture of openness and accountability in governing institutions.
