Iraqi parliament fails to hold its last meeting to extend his life

Baghdad Aktham Saif Eddin

30 June 2018

The Iraqi parliament failed to hold its extraordinary session on Saturday, forcing it to turn into a deliberative session amid fears of a constitutional vacuum .
A deputy for the Alliance of Forces for the "new Arab", "The parliament tried to hold its meeting since one o'clock Baghdad, but the quorum was not completed," noting that the meeting "postponed for four hours, but nevertheless did not exceed the attendance 127 deputies."

The MP added that "Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jubouri did not attend, as the session turned into a deliberative session chaired by the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hamam Hamoudi," noting that "the deliberative session was devoted to discuss the election crisis and counting and counting."

This is the last day of the Iraqi parliament, which has been extended since the beginning of June until today. By the end of this day, the Parliament is ending this session, despite attempts by several parties to extend its life, until the end of recounting.

Politicians warn of the danger of constitutional vacuum in which Iraq enters.

For his part, MP for the National Coalition, Abdul Karim Abtan, the "new Arab", that "Iraq will face the problem of constitutional vacuum because of the extension of the life of parliament," noting that "this vacuum will have negative consequences on the Iraqi reality in all respects."

Abtan added that "the Iraqi people is affected by this vacuum, as the role of parliament will be disrupted during this period, and will disrupt the Council of Ministers," stressing that "Iraq has faced a major imbalance because of the drafting of the Constitution, which prevented the possibility of extending the life of Parliament."

With the end of the life of the Iraqi parliament, the new parliament is supposed to start its work, but the decision to re-count and the results of elections that have not yet begun, will disrupt the possibility of holding in the near future.

This comes in light of the political crisis experienced by Iraq, resulted after the proof of fraud in the results of parliamentary elections, which took place on 12 May last, prompting a judicial decision to re-count.
