Prime Minisrer Haider al-Abadi Abadi

Nasr (Victory) Alliance affirmed Sunday that the current Prime Minisrer Haider al-Abadi Abadi is still his strongest candidate to take the office for another term.

Hassan al-Senaid, member of the Nasr Alliance, affirmed that Abadi has the best chance  to take the office in the next government, saying that he have done some accomplishments during his first term.

In August, a leader within Victory Alliance, Faleh al-Fayyad revealed that Abadi would be the alliance’s candidate for the post.

 However, Abadi announced in a press conference on September 13, that he will not sought after the post, saying that he respects the instructions of the Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq's top Shiite cleric.

This came two days after Sistani’s statements that neither of Iraq's previous two Prime Ministers should be the next leader of the country, referring to Abadi and Nouri al-Maliki.

This is me just talking out loud, Iraq had better do something to placate USA’s interests. I can’t believe we are just going to hand over Iraq to Iran. Abadi is maybe the only one who has the necessary experience and contacts to get Iraq rebuilt with foreign investors. I’m thinking the US would like him to continue being the PM as well.  Like you say, we’ll see what shakes out.

This is game time now.  Parliament positions have been filled by the quota system, as will the president be a Kurd and the Prime Minister be a Shia.  In Iraq that appears to be written in stone.  As I had talked about earlier, primarily Parliaments delay was more toward forming alliances/for the largest bloc and disagreements over the Speaker of parliament.  Now that is done the president will be decided by the Kurds.  As for Iraq these decisions take too long.  Now comes the tricky part.  Who has formed the largest bloc.  We need to keep our eye on the Kurds they are the King makers.  I love Abadi, but he has lost confidence with the Kurds for reasons we all know.  The Kurds support Mahdi so we will just have to see who the Kurds join to form the largest bloc.  The Kurds are asking for all things constitutionally to be followed ie.. article 140 including referndum in Kirkuk and a Census.  These are the prerequsites for HCL.  So far the GOI has tried to appease the citizens with their National Oil Company Law, but as we have seen from the crisis in Basra, the citizens are not getting paid.  IMO, the next few weeks are going to be very interesting. Discernment, on who's reporting the news will be important for the next few weeks/month.

I really don't follow this as closely as any of you.........my thoughts would be that if the Kurds are the "King Makers".....they are more tightly aligned with the US than with Iran.......if so Abadi holds on.  The World seems to be willing to work with Abadi on the reconstruction of Iraq........Anyone else would be questionable in my mind in that regard.

Abdul-Mahdi joined the ICP-Central Leadership, and continued being active until it gradually disappeared by the early 1980s. By that time, Abdul-Mahdi adopted Iranian Islamic ideas, eventually merging with the Islamists when Ayatollah Khomeini eradicated the communists and other liberal oppositions groups in Iran. In 2006, Abdul-Mahdi, outgoing Vice President in the transitional government, unsuccessfully ran for the United Iraqi Alliance's nomination for Prime Minister against incumbent Ibrahim al-Jaafari. He lost by one vote. He was reportedly considered to be a possibility for Prime Minister once again until Nouri al-Maliki became the UIA nominee. Subsequently, Abdul-Mahdi was re-elected as Vice President of Iraq. He exerted his limited authority in that role by delaying the first meeting of the National Assembly in March. He resigned from his position as vice-president on 31 May 2011.^[5]

In December 2006, the Associated Press reported that Abdul-Mahdi could be the next Prime Minister of Iraq if a new multi-sectarian coalition succeeded in toppling the government of Nouri al-Maliki.^[6]

In 2009, his bodyguards were involved in a bloody bank robbery in Baghdad.^[7]

Assassination attempts

On 26 February 2007, he survived an assassination attempt that killed ten people. He had been targeted two times prior to this latest attack.^[8]
