Iraq: Expansion of a military base with US troops

Baghdad Baraa al - Shammari

3 July 2018

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi military sources announced on Tuesday the start of the expansion of the Ain al - Assad base in Anbar province , western Iraq , where US forces are located .

A senior officer in the Iraqi army said that the mechanisms and cadres of construction began construction work and expansion of the base to a distance of several kilometers, indicating in an interview with "the new Arab", that the expansion included the northern and western parts of the base.

The officer pointed out that the expansion work is under strict security guard for fear of infiltrating the base through cadres to expand the building.

The source did not confirm the real reasons behind the expansion, likely to be for the reception of new forces in the base, which is located in a desert area that still includes the focal points of the organization " da'ash " terrorist.

The same source did not rule out that the expansion of the military base is a prelude to receiving new US forces, especially with the frequency of reports of US forces conducting reconnaissance missions near the Iraqi border with Syria.

Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes, vice-chairman of the Popular Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), has confirmed the presence of US troops on the Iraqi-Syrian border, accusing the Americans of " opening holes in the border " between the two countries.

In a related context, the international coalition, led by Washington against the organization "Da'ash" terrorist in Iraq and Syria, the implementation of 39 air strikes in the Qaim and the wet in western Iraq, and Hawija (north), explaining in a statement that the raids included two areas inside Syrian territory.

The statement pointed out that " the bombing targeted the destruction of supply routes to the caves where masquerades" Daesh "organization in Iraq, as well as tactical units and mechanisms and stores of weapons and explosives belonging to the organization in Syria " .

"The destruction of targets in these two countries will limit the organization's ability to conduct external operations in the region and the world," the statement quoted US officials as saying.

This comes at a time when warned the Chairman of the Committee on Security and Defense in the Iraqi parliament, the governor of Zamili, on more than one occasion, the collapse of security conditions in the constitutional vacuum at the end of the parliament, and the use of coinciding with bombings and killings and kidnappings in northern and western Iraq.

The developments prompted Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to confirm that the security forces will continue to pursue the organization of "Daqash" in the mountains, desert and other areas, noting that " Iraq will not negotiate with the organization, and we will pursue its hiding elements , " warning of the possible loss of security achieved in Iraq victory over the organization of "Daash" if " unity and move to confront the conspiracies were not carried out . "

The U.S. armed forces are planning to establish new military bases on the territory of Iraq and Kuwait, reported the TV channel PressTV with reference to the Iraqi media.

According to the TV channel, the Americans plan to create a military base in the Iraqi province of Al Anbar, which will allow them to control the road connecting Baghdad with Damascus, as well as the territories in the west of the country. It is noted that the military base will become the third in the province along with air bases Al-Assad and Habbaniyah. The U.S. military will also open an airbase in Kuwait, which would become the main logistics point and the largest landing point in the Middle East.

The U.S. withdrew its forces from Iraq in December 2011 and returned to the country in August 2014 after the seizure of the country's territories by the militants of the Islamic State. The Prime Minister of Iraq, Haider al-Abad, announced a victory over ISIS in December 2017. The operation against ISIS was carried out with the support of the US-led Coalition. In early February, Al-Abad stated that Baghdad had adopted a plan to gradually reduce the presence of the US-led coalition in the country.

Anbar province is the largest governorate in iraq by area .... cheers ... go cbi

Reports: Israel plans to bomb sites in Iraq
The newspaper "Al-Jarida" claimed that it obtained exclusive aerial photographs, saying that "targets will be subjected to Israeli bombardment inside Iraq, claiming to be Iranian military sites used to transfer weapons, equipment and elements to Syria."

The Kuwaiti newspaper claimed that "its sources were supplied with photographs taken in the past two months for those targets that Israel intends to hit, including border crossings with Iran, such as Mehran and Bashmak, along with Shalamjah border with Basra, and close to Kuwait." The story was published by the political analyst in the Jerusalem Post, on his personal account on Twitter.
The newspaper quoted the sources as saying that "Israel has often spotted, in recent years, Iranian attempts to create a land corridor from Tehran, passing through Baghdad to the Syrian territory, adding that some of those sites that are now controlled by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards were under the control of the US military in Iraq such as H3 airport, and the site of the military wetland, as well as sites on important roads near villages and cities, such as lovers of Alba and other Iraqi sites belonging to Iran militarily.
The newspaper considered that the bombing of Israel last week, a site of the Revolutionary Guard in Syria, near the Iraqi border, is a significant development and would represent a change in the rules of the game, and may be an attempt by Tel Aviv to expand the map of confrontation with Iran.

The pro-Iranian militias of Hezbollah in Iraq have threatened to attack the US forces in the country if Israel conducts any strikes on Iranian forces operating inside Iraq.

Spokesperson for Kataib Hezbollah Brigade, Mohammed Muhyee, told al-Mayadeen news channel on Sunday that they are urging the Iraqi government to defend its sovereignty against any possible Israeli strikes on its territories.

He blamed the US policy for an anticipated Israeli attack, claiming that the people of Iraq would attack the US forces in response to Israel’s move.

The threatening message by Shi’ite militias came a day after al-Jarida newspaper reported that Israel has obtained the list of Iranian targets on Iraq’s territory, and possibly planning a strike against them.

Since when, in the history of war, did the enemy actually warn their foes they were about to attack?!  🙄

What is the true intention behind that strategy?

Climber the only time I remember the Warnings of an Impeding Attack say 30 days early were during the obama administration......That is what makes the liberals so crazy in Trump just does it and it is over before the media can spin it........Like the M.O.A.B. Strike boom and it was done.

Iran needs to remember Trump still has more M.O.A.B.s to drop at his disposal.

Saddam got all kinds of warning.  Yep about 5 months of USA and allied build up of military in the ME.  You know he was pissing himself when he saw all that hardware coming for him in 1991.

Iran won’t be any harder than Iraq.

Pitcher i like you i really do but    saying iran won't be any harder than iraq is

kinda funny. I think seventeen years of pouring money into this mess and what

did we gain? Let's not forget iran now has nuclear. This whole area is nothing

but a den of thieves. Nobody can be trusted   Nobody.

Apologies Donziman, I was a little flippant in my remarks.  War is never easy and should always be a last resort.

Iran is on a mission to destabilize the ME.  They are not to be trusted as evidenced by their violation of Obama’s Nuclear deal in 2015.

If they try to block the Straits of Hormuz there will be a war and it will not end well for Iran and the Mullahs who have destroyed that country.

I have friends in Iran and the people are extremely unhappy with the Mullahs and their proxy wars .  They are ready for better leadership.  The average joe over there are no different than you or I.  They just want to have meaningful employment, and peace to raise their families.  They are tired of war and religious fanaticism.
