Report: Iraq is an attractive investment destination globally

%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%AB%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%B1-591x330.jpg

14th February, 2018

Thanks to its strategic location at the entrance to Europe, and as a link between the economies of Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Iraq has a huge spatial advantage as a country with opportunities not yet exploited. Iraq benefits from a large natural wealth in the form of vast reserves of natural resources.

Having suffered the severe blows of the Gulf War first and the conflict with the organization of the Islamic state recently "urged", Iraq began to shake dust and rise from the brink of destruction by setting a strategy for reconstruction, allowing the country to return to the ranks of the great regional powers.

While the important opportunity of rebuilding the country is enormous and unique, both investors and companies need business analytics to understand the right way to enter the market, the most lucrative business model and employment opportunities.

As Iraq has the largest oil reserves in the world, this fact makes it a very attractive business opportunity. With the country also focusing on diversification initiatives, opportunities are clearly emerging in sectors such as construction, infrastructure, healthcare, transportation, energy and telecommunications, which are high priority sectors.

The recent Frost & Sullivan report, "Assessing Opportunities in Various Industrial Sectors in Iraq," provides an overview of the status of these high priority sectors, as well as a summary of possible opportunities. For more information on this analysis, please click here, or contact us at achandhoke@frost.com.

"With the end of the war with Saddam Hussein, Iraq will embark on a process of reconstruction and economic recovery, which will require sustainable investments worth more than US $ 900 billion over the next decade," said Ali Mirmoud, senior advisor to Frost & Sullivan. Iraq intends to focus on the various stages of the value chain in the refining of crude oil, processing and purification of natural gas, in addition to the minerals, construction, infrastructure, health care, energy, tourism and financial services, to increase the rate of GDP growth by 10 per cent over the next ten years.

The sectors are in a state of severe chaos following the war with the Da'ash organization and will require massive redevelopment and new investments.

"The country needs foreign direct investment of more than US $ 30 billion annually to achieve its reform and stabilization objectives over the next 10 years. With more than 39,000 people in the country, Iraq remains a very attractive consumer market, with more than $ 40 billion in potential. "

Iran contributed establishing ISIS: intelligence reports

February 15 2018 02:43 PM
Dan Coats
Dan Coats

Iranian regime has contributed to the establishment of ISIS terror group, National Intelligence Agency revealed.

Addressing a meeting of the Congress' intelligence committee, NIA Director, Dan Coats confirmed the Mullah's regime had established ISIS to achieve its expansionist ideology.

He said that Iranian intervention in Iraqi affairs created political, economic and social crises that helped create ISIS.

In the same context, analysts have confirmed that the Mullahs are the real fathers of the terror group.

ISIS captured large swathes of Iraq and Syria in mid-2014.

But a military campaign launched by the US-led international coalition and Iraqi forces ousted ISIS from Iraq.

Despite PM Haider Abadi's declaration of liberation in December 2017, US officials warn the decisive defeat of ISIS has yet be achieved.

Analysts confirm that Khamenei and his fellow extremists must be tried over financing and supporting terrorism.

The hate speech is raging in Iraq as the election campaign begins

The hate speech is raging in Iraq as the election campaign begins

16th February, 2018

With the start of the election campaign in Iraq , it seems that the rhetoric of incitement and hatred is beginning to make its way through the platforms of the political and partisan blocs , which strike at the tide of violence and sectarianism, as a single means to reach their goal, which threatens the Iraqi society to strike at the core, Speeches.

The leader of the Iraqi civil movement , Saad al-Rubaie, told the "New Arab" that "the campaign launched by some parties and political parties, especially in southern Iraq, warns of serious dangers to peaceful living in the country," noting that "platforms have become platforms for incitement Spreading hatred and sectarianism in society, and not accepting others. "

Al-Rubaie explained that "most political parties do not find their purpose except through sectarian incitement," adding that "these platforms broadcast hate speech every day and spread the poison of hatred within society, which requires a government and parliamentary position, putting an end to these speeches."

In this regard, the leader of the Iraqi civil movement that "the head of a coalition of state law, Nuri al-Maliki, and members of his coalition, as well as the militias , are among the most striking sectarian strife, which focuses in their speeches on the spread of hatred among the people "Pointing out that" these letters are rejected by many of the people of the south, but at the same time convince those who do not have the culture and political awareness. "

Iraqi officials have demanded legislation that would prohibit the use of sectarian incitement, either through direct statements or insinuation, during election campaigns, and punish anyone who urges it.

The leader of the "Alliance of Iraqi Forces," Fadhel Lahibi, the "new Arab", that "the three presidencies must bear responsibility for the rhetoric of incitement and violence, which is escalating to achieve electoral gains," recalling that "the political conflict raging on the upcoming elections, Some parties are preparing the weapon of incitement from the strongest electoral weapons, so they resorted to it early, and strongly.

He called for the "enactment of a law that prevents and punishes any person or political entity that urges violence and sectarianism in the country, at any time, whether during the elections or otherwise," stressing the importance of standing in the face of these bodies, which are the promoters of sedition and violence in Iraq "He said.

And surprised by the legal, the silence of the judiciary on these bodies and rhetoric of sectarian incitement, knowing that Iraqi law holds them accountable for terrorism.

"The Iraqi law is clear in dealing with this type of rhetoric," said legal expert Bilal al-Amidi. "He said.

Al-Amidi confirmed that "these bodies are condemned by law, and there are documented records condemning them," surprising the "silence of the Iraqi judiciary towards them, and ignore the application of the law towards them."

The era of ruling parties in power in Iraq since 2003 has proved that sectarianism in the country is an important weapon on which some parties depend to ensure their survival in power, which leads them to constantly fuel sectarianism

International companies looking to implement major projects

80.jpg

17/2/2018 12:00 am

After Iraq won international confidence

Baghdad / Al-Sabah

The process of transformation in the Iraqi economy is proceeding at an accelerated pace, after the country has gained international confidence and the major international companies are racing to gain a foothold in the Iraqi labor market. It is good to stop at once and consider the next steps to be taken in Iraq. Could be undertaken by the private sector.

Of course, that shift begins with many areas of infrastructure, especially electric power, as it is the basis on which modern Iraq will be built. The provision of electrical energy and the work of its durability and reliability, to ensure delivery to every Iraqi citizen, is a basic human and important for the social and economic development in the country.

Quality projects

"The Kuwait conference represents the acquisition of Iraq's international confidence and the evolving global effort, which makes Iraq to accept the global companies that have the ability to implement quality projects in dire need of them," said Musab al-Khatib, CEO of Siemens in Iraq.
"The electricity sector is at the center of development and the foundation for economic development. Through a series of integrated strategies in the short, medium and long term, it is possible to ensure a rapid and smooth transition to a stable and enhanced energy grid by halting the growing gap between demand and energy," he said. .

Power generation

According to a study of the reality of the rates of demand for electricity in Iraq, the growth rate is almost 6 percent per year, which means the need to increase the generation of electricity at the rate of 1,500 megawatts an additional year .. Here it is necessary to meet this growing demand for energy quickly to stop the growing gap between levels of demand and Available from electric power.
"The current infrastructure of the electrical system in Iraq will be a major contributor to increasing the production of electric power in the future in the short and medium term, as there are promising possibilities to build a set of temporary mobile power stations, which can be implemented within months, At the same time to rehabilitate existing power plants, thereby contributing to the restoration of a large capacity to generate power in areas that need the most "

International companies
A member of the Baghdad Economic Forum Jassem al-Aradi said in an interview for "morning" "the importance of the advancement of the electricity sector, because it is an active participant in the process of economic development sought by the Iraqi participation with international companies specialized and expressed their desire to enter the Iraqi market and work in liberated areas and various investment."
He pointed out that "Iraq can employ free natural gas and associated investment to cover the requirements of energy and industry in general and the export of surplus, and thus can move the national economy in cooperation with major specialized companies."

Sustainable energy
"It is important to take education and training into account," Khatib said. "We do not believe that a sustainable energy state can be built by importing talent. Sustainable economic and social development is supported by a group of local talents with high skills and experience, It is not necessary that the skills we have today are what we need in five to ten years from now on".
"The need to provide them with the skills they need in the future, to bridge the gap between the existing workforce through new technologies and cooperation frameworks at the academic level, and the private sector is responsible for transferring knowledge, expertise and technology to empower a new generation , And education and training is an integral part of Siemens' business in the Middle East in general and Iraq in particular "

Hydrocarbon fortunes
"There are many challenges, but we believe that the future promises a lot. There are enormous resources available to the Iraqi people, whether in the form of hydrocarbon wealth or outstanding talent, and we are sure that the Iraqi government is taking firm steps to combat corruption to ensure that the future economy On solid business and projects, and look forward to having our unique and effective role in a new and exciting chapter of
March of the country ".
"Iraq has valuable hydrocarbon assets, and if used efficiently, it will push for a new era of sustainable economic development. The energy sector will of course play a major role, as more efficient power generation will leave more resources
For export, there are also large untapped potentials for associated gas or flare gas in constructive cooperation with the competent authorities (Ministry of Oil).

What happens after the Kuwait conference?

 Friday 16 February 2018

A few days ago, the Iraqis were preoccupied with the donor conference hosted by Kuwait to rebuild the "bad guys", which has become a forum for ideas and accusations, until it came to the publication of a video showing a Kuwaiti man talking from inside his car for fear of his country's support"How to hand over those donations to the government and deputy thieves stole their people's money," he shouted angrily. "Iraq is richer than Kuwait, and it has oil and agriculture," he said. I do not need it Donations ".
These questions were not far from the opinion of the majority of citizens, including the "poor slave", how a country like Iraq with its wealth under the ground and above to wait for "charity" leaders of countries and companies, which has spent on electricity alone since 2003, more than forty billion dollars and Is equivalent to an annual budget for four African countries, including Ethiopia, which approved a budget of about 12 billion and 631 million dollars in 2017, while the funds that went to pockets of theft equal the cost of reconstruction of cities destroyed by the Second World War in Germany and Japan dozens of times.

And to go back a bit and recall the former Vice President Adel Abdul Mahdi, who informs us that his monthly salary exceeds one million dollars, we will know well that hundreds of conferences will not rebuild Iraq before the elimination of corruption and spoilers, whose existence created fears for participants in the KuwaitConference.

"Al-Siraq, who launched the Kuwaiti citizen on our politicians, was a source of concern for investment companies and donor countries. He went out to Secretary General of the Council of Ministers Mehdi Al-Alak, acknowledging that" there is great corruption and the government's inability to guarantee the safety of these funds if passed by local governments. "

"Their organizations will be granted entry permits to Iraq to oversee the reconstruction process," the relations speak as if reassuring that the memory of the citizen "fish" may not recall what happened a few days ago when he ordered a book to cut the salaries of employees and contract holders who refrain from updating their electoral cards, RTM that document, which embarrassed the prime minister and ordered timely to open an investigation to uncover the facts, but the result did not show so far and has become one of the past Like other documents and evidence of corruption.

But Yaasada was not the only one of the Dawa party to get the money from the Kuwait conference, even if they had to change part of the convictions temporarily and bypass some of the red lines. The head of the parliamentary bloc of deputies behind Abdul Samad surprised us in a televised meeting, In the province of Basra liberated areas and the need to include reconstruction, Abdul Samad told us that "Al-Sibiya and Faw areas liberated from a foreign force, the Iranian army when it was controlled during the eight-year war." Yasir MP Did Iran today become an occupied state During the years of twitching Maliki, your leader, and why I remembered the occupation with the donors' conference and ignored when I was governor of Basra days budgets explosive.

In conclusion, the Kuwait conference is a final test of the government of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, to prove its intentions in the fight against corruption and to paint a different picture of the "thieves and thieves" that our politicians brought to the world. Yes, this is an opportunity to save the country from the suspicious deals that have tormented the Iraqi body for 15 years. , Can Abadi succeed in this test and keep his commitments ?, Answer will be ensured in the days after the conference.

Tillerson Says US-Turkish Relations at “Crisis Point”

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson (L) shakes hands with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, in Ankara on Feb. 16.

17th February, 2018
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson (L) shakes hands with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, in Ankara on Feb. 16.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has acknowledged that his country's relationship with Turkey is "at a bit of a crisis point", as his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, demanded that the United States "turn words into actions" to resolve their differences in dealing with the Syrian crisis.

At a joint press conference in Ankara on Friday, Tillerson said the US-Turkey alliance "is too valuable" for the two countries not to take action together, particularly on their dispute over the US support of the armed Syrian Kurdish Peoples' Protection Units (YPG), considered a "terrorist group" by the Turkish government, Al Jazeera reported.

"Ours is not an alliance of convenience or of temporary interest. It is a time-tested alliance built on common interest and mutual respect," Tillerson said.

"Our two countries share the same objectives in Syria."

Standing next to Tillerson, Cavusoglu said Turkey's relationship with the US "is at a critical stage", and the two allies need to decide whether "to mend fences, or go in a different direction".

Cavusoglu said "some of the promises" the US made "were not kept", alluding to Turkey's demand that the US-backed YPG leave the Syrian town of Manbij and move east of Euphrates River.

As part of the effort to mend US-Turkish relations, Cavusoglu announced that the two countries have agreed to establish a "joint mechanism" to deal with disputes and to take "collective response".

But neither Cavusoglu nor Tillerson provided details about the plan.

A war of words between Turkey and the US has escalated ever since Turkey launched a military offensive into the Afrin region of northern Syria in January, in an effort to root out the YPG.

Turkey had also reacted angrily to reports that the US wanted to arm as many as 30,000 Kurdish troops in Syria's Manbij.

The ongoing operation has left at least 30 Turkish soldiers and over a thousand of YPG fighters killed, according to reports.

Earlier this week, Turkey demanded the US expel the YPG from the Syrian Democratic Forces coalition, which has been fighting the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group in Syria.

The Turkish government views the YPG as an extension of the outlawed the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has fought a decades-long war against Turkey.

Earlier this month, Erdogan accused the US of sending stockpiles of weapons to the YPG in Syria, a claim Tillerson himself denied on Thursday.

Erdogan then threatened to deliver an "Ottoman slap"—a tactic used by Ottoman forces in the 17th century that, according to legend, could be instantly fatal—if the US does not get out of the way.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Ibrahim Fraihat, a Middle East analyst at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, said the Turks are "very angry" over US policy in Syria.

Reflecting Turkish anger towards the US, hundreds of demonstrators marched through the streets of Ankara on Friday in protest against Tillerson's visit and demanded the US cut ties with the YPG.

The squabble over Syria is, however, just one of a litany of issues burdening Turkey-US relations.

Ties were damaged after the failed coup of 2016 with Turkey stung by a perceived lack of US solidarity and angered by Washington's refusal to extradite Fethullah Gulen, a Pennsylvania-based cleric accused of ordering the putsch.

Tillerson also urged the release of Turks and Americans who have been caught up in the post-coup crackdown.

He said Washington continued to have "serious concerns" about the detentions and "will continue to engage with our Turkish counterparts to seek a satisfactory resolution to these cases."

Turkish sentiments against the US have also grown. A recent poll found that 79% of Turks hold an unfavorable view of the US government, with only 18% having a favorable view.

Even people-to-people ties are affected with 67% of Turks having an unfavorable view of Americans.

Relations to rebuild Iraq's infrastructure. "

At the closing session of the Iraq Reconstruction Conference held in Kuwait last week, two speeches were prepared by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abbadi and the UN Secretary-General to present one of them in the event of achieving the goals of the conference.

Iraq needs billions of dollars to rebuild its cities after the defeat of a military-backed organization, but countries that have expressed their willingness to shoulder the burden of reconstruction have sent a mixed message of support, leaving a dubious final result.

In the weeks following the conference, announcements of the end of the event have fallen, with the main target of $ 20 billion to $ 10 billion. Until then, it was not clear which speech would be presented, according to a source familiar with the preparations.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates Iraq needs nearly $ 88 billion to rebuild its devastated infrastructure, housing and other vital services, most of which are supposed to come from government oil revenues.

In the end, extra support has raised nearly $ 30 billion in complex deals on loans and investment guarantees, which is below the primary target.

This was reflected in Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's speech, which noted that the conference was an exceptional guide to the support of the Iraqi government and people. An Iraqi official said that although the government received $ 30 billion, but so far has not received official documents and pledges.

Although the final figure is much higher than expected, questions remain as to whether the Gulf states are in financial straits and whether they will keep their promises. As well as private companies will start to increase the investment necessary to begin reconstruction after years of war ?.

Iraq amidst this confusion, enters the national elections in the month of May next, and the government must bear a large share of the burden of reconstruction of Iraq.

IFC estimated that Iraq alone needs at least $ 50 billion. "This figure is not realistic unless oil prices remain relatively stable," said Christian Goose, deputy head of IMF's Middle East Monetary Department. Adding that "the funding gap is increasing significantly if oil prices fall."

However, the results of the conference outweighed many dim forecasts. "This is an important reference to Iraq, through which Abbadi will go to the elections," said Elizabeth Dickinson, chief analyst for the Arabian Peninsula in the International Crisis Group. "This gives us something concrete to return to Baghdad and demonstrate the capacity to support and rebuild the country."

Many foreign officials at the conference say contributions are expected to be much lower. In early December, some officials said it was difficult to reach the Iraqi government's original standard for raising $ 20 billion from international donors.

"We were strongly encouraged to seriously reconsider this," a Western diplomat told AFP.

The most pressing question is how Iraqis who expected to start a Marshall Plan when the international conference ends with loans and goodwill will explain, not many direct donations. In the end, the government pressed its goal of holding the assembly and renamed it a "donors" conference to the "reconstruction" conference. A large part of this draws attention to the expected shortage of pledged funds.

Much of the fear is due to lack of confidence from countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

In the beginning, the Gulf states were supposed to shoulder much of the burden on Iraqi reconstruction efforts in exchange for a rear seat in military operations against Da'ash. But Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait all made $ 5 billion and were expected to do much more.

Western diplomats worry about the possibility of billions sinking into a country dominated by Iran, as well as the apparent lack of Gulf spending and the financial crisis they are experiencing. The ongoing war in Yemen has reduced diplomatic and military power in Saudi Arabia and the UAE in particular, not to mention the drop in oil prices that has led to the discontent of Gulf governments.

"I think many are waiting for the post-election period because they want to know who will lead the government first," a senior US official told AFP.

However, the fact that any money comes at all is evidence of an improved Iraqi situation. "The Gulf states, especially Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, see Abadi as someone who can be dealt with,"Dickinson of the International Crisis Group said.

Security concerns remain largely a hindrance to donor and creditor accounts, as well as to private sector companies that had the lion's share of the conference. Although the Da'id organization has been completely defeated in Iraq, the risk of a perceived return is high for donors.
