US confirm 9 American Abrams tanks in hands of Iranian militia

Iranan militias in Iraq have obtained up to nine M1 Abrams main battle tanks, according to a Pentagon inspector general's audit of the mission to crush Daesh in Iraq and Syria.

"The US Department of State acknowledged that some US-provided military equipment sent to support the mission, including as many as nine M1 Abrams tanks, had fallen into the hands of Iranian-backed militias that fought against [Daesh] in Iraq," the report, released on February 2, reads.

In the past, unverified pictures posted on social media indicated that militia groups under the People's Mobilization Forces' umbrella had the US-made tanks in their possession. The State Department has pushed the Iraqi government to make securing the tanks a priority, the report said.

A spokesman for the company that makes the tanks, General Dynamics, told al-Ghad in January that it would be packing its bags and leaving maintenance stations in Iraq since that country had violated the terms of the agreement and lent the tanks to the Iran -backed groups. The contract only authorized the Iraqi Army to use the vehicles themselves.

The State Department, however, would not confirm the General Dynamics representative's statement about withdrawal maintenance crews due to the contract violation, telling Kurdistan 24, "The Abrams maintenance program for the Iraqi Security Forces is still current active, and there is no plan to discontinue it in the future. "If General Dynamics refuses to do the work, the US can likely draw on vast quantities of contractors to pick up the slack.

"Sometimes the PMF requests for American tanks from the Iraqi Army if Russian-made tanks are unavailable," according to Hussam al-Mayahi, a weapons specialist within the PMF, as quoted by We Are The Mighty.

Baghdad has been a prolific buyer of Russian and American tanks, but it has a history of letting its foreign-made weapons and military vehicles fall into the wrong hands. The Iraqis lost 40 M1 Abrams tanks as result of corruption within the army, poorly trained tank crews, and outright abandonment in the summer of 2014,according to defense expert Matthew Aid.

In 2014, the US State Department approved the sale of 175 M1A1 Abrams tanks to Baghdad, according to the Pentagon. Last year, Iraq started to accept delivery of an order for 74 Russian T-90 tanks to reinforce the Abrams fleet

We can all thank Maliki and crew. No doubt Iran rewarded that rat, handsomely too.

Just one more reason for Trump to say "no more money". Your turn, Iraq.

Pull your head out and do something for yourselves. I really hate those guys.

I agree K.B. Or they could take back the tanks, point them in 4 different directions put ropes on Maliki's arms and legs and gently pull forward until tight and then just rip him apart. 😁

Your idea..........WAY more satisfying. Sell tickets. They will recover that missing $300 Billion fast. :twothumbs:

No biggie, they’re in the hands a$$hole$. Fly a few sorties over and render them paperweights. We spend more than 100x their worth every year in supporting illegal immigrants. Just write them off as  a loss before they’re used against our troops. Hell Tesla just spent more placing car in orbit, in space, looping Major Tom on an iPod for eternity.

The use of the pro-Iranian crowd by American tanks embarrasses Abadi

The agreement between Washington and Baghdad states that US weapons should only be used by the Iraqi army.

Baghdad violated the military agreement with America

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US weapons, including Abrams tanks, were used by pro-Iranian militias in the fight against Islamic extremists in Iraq before returning them to the military, the Pentagon said on Friday.

This development would be an embarrassment for Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi, who has strongly defended the popular militia.

"Abrams tanks have been sold to the Iraqi government in the past 10 years as part of a military sales program run by the US State Department, but were used by pro-Iranian popular militias in the fight against the organization of the Islamic state," Pentagon spokesman Eric Bahon said.

Under the agreement with Washington, the tanks should only be used by the Iraqi army, but the US official said, "We discovered that US equipment, including the Abrams tanks, was found several times by some groups of the popular mobilization forces."

Popular forces in Iraq dominate Shiite militias very close to Tehran and have become an indispensable pillar of the Iraqi armed forces in the face of jihadist militants.

The Iraqi parliament, which is considered a popular "state institution" moving within the framework of the Iraqi constitution, voted to integrate the crowd into regular forces, but Washington is concerned about Iran's authority over these Shiite armed units and its influence in Iraq.

"We will continue to monitor all forces that have received US military equipment to make sure that our equipment remains in the hands of the designated user," the Pentagon spokesman said. "All the tanks have recently been returned to the Iraqi army."

On the other hand, the spokesman denied information that General Dynamics, which manufactures the Abrams tank, suspended the maintenance contract for Iraqi tanks.

"The program of maintenance of the Abrams tanks of the Iraqi army remains in force," he said.

Popular militias have repeatedly threatened to strike US troops, while Washington has previously refused to join the militia in the military operation amid Western and Arab fears of sectarian crimes.

In October 2017, the US Vice-President of the popular crowd, Abuhadi, was described as the terrorist.

That angered the crowd leaders who considered the statement a "direct threat" to the engineer.

"This person is a terrorist, and that's all we can say at the moment," the State Department said in response to a question about the engineer's role in the Kirkuk battles, noting that the engineer "was listed on terrorism lists by the United States in 2009."

He is the deputy chairman of the Popular Gathering Organization and is close to all Iraqi military leaders and has participated in all operations against the organization of the Islamic state.
