Baghdad on a date with one of the largest international projects

The World Bank has approved a new $ 210 million project that will help improve the quality of drinking water and sanitation services in water-scarce Baghdad and the spread of diseases transmitted by it, due to poor infrastructure, rapid population growth and the influx of displaced people.
The World Bank said in a statement that about five million residents of the Iraqi capital will benefit from the project, which will be implemented in conjunction with the Municipality of Baghdad and the departments of water and sewage in the city.
"Baghdad will need huge investments in drinking water and sewage treatment systems over the next 20 years," said Saruj Kumar Jha, regional director of the Mashreq World Bank.
The World Bank said the project would fund the construction of a service tank with a total capacity of 135,000 cubic meters, helping the city manage water supply better in the event of drought caused by climate change. The project will rehabilitate existing sewage pumping stations, thereby reducing the overall health effects of untreated sewage discharged into the Tigris River.
The project will also contribute to reducing material losses by replacing some 130 kilometers of drinking water network pipes and establishing water flow meters in all areas of Baghdad.
Residents of the capital suffer daily drinking water shortages, especially during the hot summer months. Baghdad is one of the provinces affected by the spread of water-borne diseases. The leakage of sewage pipes leads to contamination of drinking water and groundwater systems, exacerbating health and environmental problems.
Baghdad's population has risen by 45 percent in three years, according to the capital's municipality, but the infrastructure is inadequate as well as affected by wars and sanctions suffered by the country.

Specialist: Iraq has the ingredients of success

Baghdad / Emad Al-Amara
Cooperation on the issue of water will solve the problem of scarcity among the riparian countries. Regional cooperation will also lead to the establishment of advanced relations between the countries of the same basin. This will support the economic side in building strong mutual relations through the establishment of joint projects between Iraq and Turkey, , Especially water, agriculture and energy projects to support the economies of both countries.

An important motivation
academic economist , Dr. Raad striation said that "international water sharing agreements will be an important driver, because the oil wealth available in Iraq, it needs Turkey and the European countries consumed in the geographical neighborhood, makes it possible to use Turkey 's strategic as a transit country (transit) to build oil and gas pipelines Iraqi to the European continent. " "The economic relations between the two countries have developed and there have been reciprocal visits by their officials at a high level, resulting in economic and trade agreements that led to Turkish companies having access to investment opportunities in Iraq. He pointed out that "the conclusion of agreements with Turkey contribute to the reconstruction of the country and increase the flow of Iraqi oil through the Turkish territory, and the high volume of trade exchange between the two countries, was announced at the time the formation of the Supreme Council for strategic cooperation between Iraq and Turkey. Various fields

The most important items of this cooperation are aimed at encouraging cooperation in the field of agricultural water resources to help Iraq meet its agricultural water needs, cooperation in the field of energy between Iraqi and Turkish companies, and transfer of Iraqi natural resources to international markets through export routes (oil and gas line) To the international markets through Turkey, encouraging and working on joint programs to establish free trade and industrial zones and increase investment opportunities.
Al-Atabi explained that "there are three elements possessed by Iraq and can be used to solve the water problem with Turkey, these elements are the market, oil wealth, and geographical location. Testing policy and "about the Iraqi market, the trade policy of the country should be linked with plans drawn aim to achieve gains and benefits from all countries that have common interests such as Turkey strategy."

"The granting of an important and influential portion of Turkey's foreign trade will make part of its economy dependent on Iraq," he said. "This has an important impact on the modification of the Turkish water policy on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers." He pointed out that "the second element of power is oil wealth, where it can play a crucial role in solving the water problem between Iraq and Turkey, because the latter produces only 16 percent of its oil needs and imports 84 percent from abroad," adding that " For additional sources to supply them with oil, spending about $ 43 billion in 2013 for the purchase of oil and gas.
"Turkey's oil demand will increase by increasing its economic development plans, which we are monitoring its great growth, so Iraq will play the biggest role in providing Turkey with crude oil via its pipeline through Turkish territory, as well as the oil revenues of Turkish ports," he said. Geographical location

Al-Attabi concluded by pointing out that "the third element of power possessed by Iraq is the geographical location because it represents in its location and economic importance in the heart of the Middle East a focal point between the two scales linking the Mashreq countries between East and West, Iraq complement this link as the link between Turkey And the Gulf States

BAGHDAD - The Iraqi capital's decrepit water network will be overhauled under a $210 million World Bank project aimed at tackling chronic supply shortages and outbreaks of disease.

Five million people are expected to benefit from the work, which includes steps to stop leaking sewer pipes contaminating Baghdad's water supply, the Bank said in a statement Wednesday.

A 135,000 cubic metre reservoir will help the city cope with climate-induced droughts.

Sewerage pumping stations will be modernised to reduce the health risks of untreated wastewater discharged into the Tigris river, and about 130 kilometres of the water distribution network will be replaced.

"Water supply and sanitation have immediate and major impacts on the quality of life of citizens," Baghdad mayor Thikra Alwash said in the statement.

"We are committed to improving public services for the residents of Baghdad and to alleviating the burden households face on a daily basis in getting clean and reliable water supply."

Years of war and international sanctions under dictator Saddam Hussein took a heavy toll on the infrastructure of the capital, whose population has soared by 45 percent in three years.

Drought-Stricken Cape Town Braces For Water To Run Out In April   <--------  so how will world bank  figure out  who is worthy of water ? gettyimages-908727234_wide-de36d791dfcee

People collect drinking water from pipes fed by an underground spring last week in Cape Town. Next month, the city will slash its individual daily water consumption limit to 13.2 gallons, the mayor said, as the city battles its worst drought in a century. Rodger Bosch /AFP/Getty Images  ...    ( my  thoughts here    lets see  cape town  , really not fighting , might be corrupt but  as the way Iraq has been  ,  cape town is  the good son or daughter  I suppose ...  Iraq   4 or 5  or even more tribes  getting  " butt hurt "  ( new word of the year I guess <_< )  over  who is ripping who off  over  oil well gas ,  and who is stealing  the money reserves ...   why does Iraq get the world banks involvement ?  and  even more  " dam  loans "  (<--------  see  what  I did there  :P )  can read the cape town water deal  from n.p.r.  news files  ,  do a search  under water shortage ...   cape town event --->

Starting Feb. 1, Cape Town will force residents to cut their water consumption to 13.2 gallons per day, down from 23 gallons. The city has already banned filling swimming pools and washing cars. Also in an October mandate, people were asked to take two-minute showers and limit use of appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines, Pumza Fihlani, a BBC correspondent in Johannesburg, tells Here & Now's Robin Young.

"For people that are used to the luxury that Cape Town promises, this has come across as a rather drastic measure," she says. "People are reusing some of the water that they've used in other areas and finding other uses for it around the household. This means limiting the amount of water you drink, limiting the showers that you take."

Water Shortage Issue Related to the Mexican Water Deficit  <------- TEXAS  can get a huge  world bank support loan  ?

The failure of Mexico to consistently deliver water in accordance with the 1944 water treaty between the United States and Mexico significantly harms Texas interests.

The treaty requires delivery from certain tributaries in Mexico to the United States of not less than a minimum annual average of 350,000 acre feet, in cycles of five consecutive years. Mexico’s failure to deliver the amount of water owed results in undue hardship for Texas' water users who rely on that water for irrigation, as well as municipalities that need the irrigation water to convey public drinking water supplies. In fact, a 2013 study by Texas A&M AgriLife concluded that a loss of irrigation water in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas endangers approximately 4,840 jobs per year and reduces output in the valley by an estimated $395 million.

Despite countless meetings between U.S., Texas, and Mexico water officials, Mexico has yet to provide a concrete proposal and further productive and earnest discussions and commitment to honor the Treaty and deliver the minimum annual amount of water. To resolve this issue, Mexico must recognize their obligation to the United States under the 1944 Treaty, set aside water for Treaty compliance, and deliver water on a schedule that benefits all users within the Rio Grande Basin. The United States has never failed to meets its obligation on the Colorado to deliver 1.5 million acre-feet to Mexico under the same Treaty. Texas is simply requesting that Mexico treat its obligation to the Rio Grande in the same manner.
