Iraq, December 11, 2017

Visas and drivers' license renewals will be a part of the Kurdistan Regional Government's efforts to simplify basic government services.

'The Ministry of Interior is committed to providing the quickest high-quality services to the citizens,” said Interior Minister Karim Sinjari in a UNDP statement.

The e-visas and drivers' licenses are just portions of the KRG's 12 billion dinar (about $10 million) project supported by the UN Development Programme and the Azerbaijani government, as Rudaw previously reported.

The Ministry of the Interior organized a conference which was under the auspices of KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani.

“This will not only save considerable time and money for the citizens and Ministry alike, but it will help address potential administrative and financial corruption as well,” said Minister Sinjari.

Other services such as the issuing of birth, divorce, death and other certificates will also be included in the program, entitled E-Governance for Better Delivery Service which was launched in March.

“Any such effort must pay special attention to helping the most vulnerable and marginalized segments of the population, who may not have access to or experience with ICT platforms to be equally served with these modern means,' stated UNDP Iraq Director Mounir Tabet.

The process will be implemented through pilot Public Service Centers, which are hubs equipped with Information and Communication Technologies which can also be accessed remotely through the Internet.

Prime Minister Barzani and his deputy Qubad Talabani have pushed for a modernization of government systems including foreign audits, biometric registration of civil employees, greater transparency, electricity reform, among other reforms.
