Former US President Barack Obama called on American voters to protect democracy and warned against complacency in this area. Nazi Germany used a model to show the dangers.

"We are content and assume that things are going on as they are, but that does not happen," Obama said at a conference in Chicago. "You have to take care of this democracy garden, or things will collapse quickly. We've seen communities where that happens, "he said, referring to the late 1920s and 1930s.

"There was a ballroom in Vienna in the late 1920s and 1930s that looked elegant and full of music, art, culture and science and went on forever," he said. "Then 60 million people died and entered a whole world in anarchy." .

Obama has remained in the shadows since leaving the White House in line with the tradition of former presidents by not expressing their views on everyday political matters.

He criticized specific policies of his successor, Donald Trump, such as those on immigration and climate, but avoided publicly criticizing the Republican president in person.

He repeatedly called on his "democratic" party to move and organize ahead of mid-term elections next year to renew Congress and urge voters to vote.
