The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterich, said that four countries in the world carry out 87% of all executions, calling for the abandonment of these "barbaric methods".

United Nations - Sputnik. "Only four countries implement 87 percent of all recorded death sentences," Guterich said in a speech on the occasion of the International Day of the Death Penalty. "These countries are Iraq, Iran, China and Saudi Arabia, according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

"We are concerned about a review of the moratorium on executions in cases related to terrorism," the Secretary-General added.

He pointed out the lack of transparency in the implementation of the death penalty, adding that "some governments ... conceal information about the death row and the reason for these provisions."

"I would like to appeal to all countries that continue with such barbaric methods to stop executions and there is no place for the death penalty in the 21st century," he said.

According to UN data, the number of executions carried out in 2016 has decreased by 37 percent compared to 2015.
