ERBIL — The Islamic Republic of Iran is concerned about the Kurds’ support for the establishment of a self-governing region for Sunni Arabs in Iraq.

Confidential sources told BasNews that the Iranian authorities fear the establishment of an autonomous region for Sunnis in Iraq and are concerned about the support of Kurds for the move.

The sources revealed that Iran is ready to urge the Iraqi government to negotiate with Kurdistan Region over the results of the independence referendum provided that Kurds refrain from supporting an autonomy for Sunnis.

“Iran has clearly stated that it is ready to urge Iraq to kick-start negotiations with Erbil even over the result of the September 25 independence vote,” the sources noted, adding that it will also help cease Baghdad’s pressures on Kurdistan Region if Kurds don’t back the move of Sunnis.

The Iranian officials have noted that they won’t give up on the Sunni areas, particularly Mosul, which have been liberated by the Iranian-backed Shi’ite militias of Hashd al-Shaabi.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia-Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour said on Friday that were looking for a win-win solution for the issues after the independence referendum of Kurdistan.

Iraqi Sunnis are attempting to organize a referendum for establishing an autonomous region for the Sunni provinces in northern and central Iraq.

This came during a meeting held by the President of the region Massoud Barzani with Vice President Iyad Allawi and Osama Najafi in Sulaymaniyah.

A statement to the presidency of the region responded to the twilight News, that the meeting witnessed the current situation in Iraq and how to address the issues and problems in the political arena.

The statement quoted the President of the Office of the Presidency of the region Fuad as saying that the attendees agreed on four points, including the first to start a dialogue and meetings between the main political parties in Iraq to work to calm the situation.

He added that the second point included the meetings on an open program of work, pointing out that the third point included the immediate lifting of the sanctions imposed on the Kurdistan Region.

The fourth and last point included the start of dialogues in the near future based on a special mechanism for continuous coordination.
