Kurdistan Political Leadership Ensures Int. Community of Peaceful Intentions Behind Referendum

ERBIL — The Kurdistan Political Leadership held a meeting on Sunday to commend the role of people in making the independence vote a success, and, also, ensuring the international community that the move is intended to promote stability in the wider region.

Chaired by Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani, the majority of Kurdistan Region’s political parties were present at the meeting which mainly focused on the outcomes of the referendum.

In an official press release, the Kurdistan political leadership congratulated the people over the successful independence referendum which happened only for the unity of the people and all political factions.

The statement emphasises that the remaining disputes between Erbil and Baghdad should only be resolved through constructive and peaceful dialogue. It also welcomes an initiative by the Iraqi Supreme Shi’ite Leader Ali Sistani, who urges the sides to return to the negotiating table.

According to the statement, Kurdistan Region’s political leadership opposes to any collective punishment imposed by the Iraqi central government against the people of Kurdistan in retaliation to the 25th September independence referendum.

“The meeting ensures the international community that the referendum was the peaceful voice of the people of Kurdistan, and it will certainly not pose a threat to the region’s stability,” reads the statement, calling on the world and regional powers to respect the will of the people of Kurdistan.

At the end, the Kurdistan political leadership pointed out that no “pressures and threats” would make them regret the decision which was made during the independence vote last Monday.

Netanyahu Denies Israel's Role in Kurdistan’s Independence Vote

Netanyahu Denies Israel's Role in Kurdistan’s Independence Vote

ERBIL — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected on Sunday the claims by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who had said that Mossad was involved in Kurdistan Region’s independence referendum held last Monday.

"Israel played no part in the Kurdish referendum, aside from the natural, deep and long-standing sympathy the Jewish people have for the Kurdish people and their aspirations," Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly government meeting.

Earlier before the independence vote in Kurdistan Region, Netanyahu had expressed endorsement for the aspiration of Kurds for statehood, saying that his county “supports the legitimate efforts of the Kurdish people to achieve a state of their own”.

Erdogan accused Israel on Saturday of helping the Kurds with their independence referendum, arguing that the Israeli flags were flying during the campaigning in favour of “Yes” vote, which, according to Erdogan, proves Mossad’s involvement in the process.

AFP quoted Erdogan as saying "this shows one thing, that this administration [the Kurdish leadership in northern Iraq] has a history with Mossad, they are hand-in-hand together.”

In response to Erdogan’s accusations, Netanyahu said he understands why "those who support Hamas tend to see the Mossad" where it suits them.

Earlier this week, BasNews reported a group of Christian women being insulted by Shi’ite Arab militias of Hashd al-Shaabi at a checkpoint in Hamdaniyah District in the north-east of Mosul.

KRP Responds to US Secretary of State’s Statement on Kurdistan’s Referendum

Basnews English

KRP Responds to US Secretary of State’s Statement on Kurdistan’s Referendum

ERBIL — The Kurdistan Region Presidency’s (KRP) spokesperson released Sunday a statement in response to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s statement on Kurdistan’s independence referendum, stating that the US should respect the legitimate right of the people of Kurdistan.

“The people of Kurdistan, who have consistently and enthusiastically supported the United States, especially more recently in its fight against ISIS and Saddam Hussein, are deeply disappointed by the statement made by Secretary Tillerson on Friday,” the statement reads.

The US does not recognize the independence referendum of Kurdistan Region and urges an end to “threats of reciprocal actions,” Tillerson said in a statement on Friday.

“Of all the countries in the world, the United States should appreciate and honor Kurds' decision for independence as manifested by 92% of the voters in a free, transparent and peaceful referendum held on September 25,” the KRP’s statement continued.

The referendum enabled the people of Kurdistan to exercise the right to self-determination as established in the UN Charter and at least two subsequent international conventions, the statement said, explaining that the referendum was held in accordance with Kurdistan’s laws and Iraqi constitution as well.

“Although we appreciate the United States' call for a nonviolent response to the referendum, neither the United States nor any other country has stopped Baghdad's unconstitutional and illegal mistreatment of Kurds, which has continued since 2005,” the statement noted.

KRP hopes that the US will revisit its position and support the legitimate aspirations of the people of Kurdistan Region as well as participate in the peaceful negotiation between Erbil and Baghdad.

Shiite pilgrims in Iraq's Kerbala have dedicated the Ashura ceremonies to flagellating their children as well as attacking Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani.

In a notorious ceremony marking the killing of Imam Hussein, Shiites chanted slogans against Kurdish people, accusing them of attempting to divide Iraq.

On September 25th, 5.2 million voters flocked to polling stations in a historic referendum on the the region's independence from Iraq. 92.7 percent of the votes were in support of independence.

Shiite pilgrims, who cut themselves and children with swords and blades swinging from chains, raised slogans attacking President Barzani.

This was held under the glare of more than 25.000 Iraqi soldiers securing the ceremonies.

They chanted slogans like, "Some chanted slogans against Iraqi Kurdish leader Massud Barzani, like 'Barzani you are the sponsor of dividing the country' and 'don't believe we will ever give you Kirkuk'.

The oil-rich Kirkuk city was included in the Kurdistan referendum. Baghdad government opposes the move, but Arab tribes in Kirkuk expressed happiness to be part of Kurdistan.

According to observers, most Shiites in Iraq and neighboring countries serve the Iranian interests at the expense of their nations'.

Iran strongly opposes the Kurdistan's referendum in fear of similar moves at home. Millions of kurds in Iran feel marginalized and oppressed under the Mullah's regime.

Following the referendum, Iran and Iraq imposed economic siege on the Kurdish region. The sieege included banning direct flights from and to airports of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah.

About Ashura Day

Ashura Day marks the 10th day of Muharam, the first month of the lunar calendar.

According to Shiites, it marks the beheading of Imam Hussein, Prophet Mohamed's grandson in Kerbala.

Sunnis around the world slam the Shiite processions as corrupt practices.

Riyadh, UAE to accept Kurdistan secession to confront Iran – Report

October 02 2017 04:30 PM
Kurdish children celebrating referendum results
Kurdish children celebrating referendum results

Several Arab Gulf countries, particularly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, see an opening in Kurdistan Region to expand the pro-Arab Sunni Muslim bloc in the Middle East, enhance the position of Sunni Arabs in other parts of Iraq, and frustrate Iran on a number of fronts, according to a report by The Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington.

The report said that these countries primary concerns include the potential outbreak of conflict, the uncontrolled potential disintegration of Iraq, a crisis in the battle against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, or the Kurdish issue somehow playing into the hands of Iran and its clients in Iraq and beyond.

According to the report, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have begun to see strategic and political benefits to some rise for the Kurds – potentially to the extent of independent statehood, but certainly including maximal autonomy in a federal Iraq.

At a maximum, Arab Gulf countries could develop a strategic relationship with Erbil in which Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) emerges as a fully-fledged member or adjunct of the group of Middle Eastern actors actively opposing Iran, it further stated.

Moreover, it pointed out that this is particularly important because the Kurdistan region could be a substantial barrier to the development and maintenance of a “land bridge” from Iran, through Iraq and into Syria and Lebanon, linking Tehran with both its clients in those countries and the strategically crucial Mediterranean Sea.

Such a land bridge, if consolidated under the complete control of Iran and its proxies, would alter dramatically the Middle Eastern strategic equation, the report added.

Kurdistan Region has to cancel independence referendum results as a precondition to enter into a serious dialogue with Baghdad to preserve Iraq’s unity, Saad al-Hadithi, spokesperson of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s media office revealed Monday.
In a statement, Saad al-Hadithi called on Kurdistan Region to reaffirm its commitment to the constitution and Federal Court decisions.
The region has to end escalation and provocation in areas it has seized, he added.
On Sunday, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced that it is ready to engage in serious negotiations with the Iraqi government.
Overwhelming, votes were in favor of seceding from Iraq in a referendum Baghdad considers unconstitutional.
The referendum was held last week despite intense international pressure to call it off, amid fears that it would spark fresh conflicts with Baghdad and with Iraq’s powerful neighbors, Iran and Turkey.

Head of parliamentary Human Rights Committee Abdul Rahim al-Shamree said that all Sunni Arabs would seek federal rule in case Kurdistan Region's referendum succeeded, a video obtained by the Baghdad Post revealed Monday.

Al-Shamree attributed this huge desire for independence from Baghdad to the central government's injustice and oppression against all constituencies.

He added that Iraq will be divided after the independence of Kurdistan, stressing his desire to see a "unified Iraq" where "all components take their rights without exception."

"Sunnis are the only component most affected by injustice, deportation, pressure, displacement, poverty and other atrocities," he added.

French President Emmanuel Macron has invited Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to Paris in hopes of easing tensions arisen between the two sides after the September 25th independence referendum in Kurdistan.

Turkey, Iran Will Harm Their Stability, Economy If Acting Against Kurdistan: Official

Turkey, Iran Will Harm Their Stability, Economy If Acting Against Kurdistan: Official

ERBIL — Any attempts by the neighboring countries to destabilize the situation of Kurdistan Region will consequently lead to instability in those countries and beyond, said a Kurdish official.

“The threats to the security, economy, and energy security will not affect Kurdistan Region alone. Harming the stability of Kurdistan will also lead to instability in those countries and the region,” said Hemin Hawrami, a senior assistant to Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani and head of President’s office for political and general relations.

“Kurdistan has proved during the past 26 years that it is a factor of stability and will remain so,” Hawrami said in an article on Sunday.

The most secure borders Turkey and Iran have had over the past 26 years were those with Kurdistan Region, he said, adding “Kurdistan Region has been an important trade gate for Iran over the past 26 years despite the international financial sanctions imposed on the country.”

According to the latest statistics, 15 percent of Iran’s imports flow to the markets of Kurdistan Region, therefore the closure of the borders will harm the economy of the country and significantly raise the rate of unemployment in Turkey and Iran, Hawrami explained.

“Kurdistan Region is the third biggest consumer market for the Turkish products, and Kurdistan is the second biggest place for the Turkish companies’ investment,” he explained.

PKK Leader Warns Turkey Against Threatening Kurdistan Region

ERBIL — A senior military commander of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) warned Turkey over its threats against Kurdistan Region, stating that holding an independence referendum is a legitimate right of the people of Kurdistan.

In an interview with a PKK-affiliate radio station, the PKK acting leader, Murat Karayilan, said that the referendum is an internal issue of Kurdistan Region and the parties can discuss it among themselves whether the vote was held at the right time or if it is a solution or not.

He emphasized that an independence referendum is a legitimate right of the people of Kurdistan and they have the right to self-determination.

Karayilan described the positions of the countries against the referendum of Kurdistan as “transgression.” He stated that Turkey treats Kurdistan Region as if it is part of Turkey not Iraq, noting that the attitudes of Iraq and Iran towards Kurdistan are impacted by Turkey’s attitudes.

He also stated that Turkey is not only against Qandil, in reference to PKK, “it is rather against all achievements of Kurds.”

The PKK leader warned Turkey that they don’t remain silent if it attempts to attack Kurdistan Region. “We, as PKK, won’t remain silent if Turkey chooses to attack Kurdistan,” he said.

Pakistan throws support behind Iraq govt, opposes Kurdish referendum

Pakistani Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria, while discussing the recent bid for Kurd secession in Iraq, said on Monday that Pakistan fully supports Iraq’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, Dawn News reported.

Pakistan is “deeply concerned over the referendum held in the Iraqi Kurdistan region on September,” the Foreign Office spokesperson said in response to a query regarding the matter during the weekly briefing.

“[While] the referendum violates the Iraqi constitution and therefore lacks any legitimacy, it also presents a challenge to peace and security of Iraq and the entire region,” Zakaria said.

Iraqi Kurds backed independence from Baghdad in a referendum held on Sept 25, alarming Ankara as it faces a separatist insurgency from its own Kurdish minority.
