The Association of Iraqi Private Banks on Monday offered condolences to the Iraqi people and economic elites on the death of prominent economist and member of the House of Representatives Mahdi al-Hafiz.

"We have received with great regret the news of the passing of dear brother and friend Mahdi al-Hafiz, a member of the House of Representatives, former Minister of Planning and a well-known national democratic figure," Masoum said in a statement received by al-Sabah. 
"We have given up one of the most prominent academic, political and intellectual figures who have fought for freedom, democracy and justice, both in the era of dictatorship and in the stage of building a new Iraq." 
The late MP Mahdi Ahmad Hafez al-Hafiz is an Iraqi politician born in 1943 in the city of Diwaniyah. He was previously minister of planning in the first ministry formed by former prime minister Iyad Allawi in 2004, a year after the fall of the former regime.
He is a member of the House of Representatives, former Minister of Planning and Development Cooperation and President of the Institute for Progress in Development Policy. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics, a Master of Sociology and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. 
Al-Hafez is the first president of the Iraq Reconstruction Strategy 2003-2005 and the vice president of the Independent Democrats Caucus. 2003-2005.
He has extensive experience in many fields of work, including the Special Adviser to the Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) (1999-2000) and the Regional Director of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Arab Countries - Beirut (Iraq, Syria and Jordan) A senior UNIDO official and the Director of the Special Program for Arab Industrial Development, including Iraq, 1983-1996, as well as an expert with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) (Geneva) 1980- 1983. 
Hafiz served as Minister Plenipotentiary of the Iraqi Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva- He then resigned for political reasons, 1978-1980, an expert in The Iraqi Ministry of Oil in particular 1975 - 1978, and Professor of Economics at the University of Mustansiriyah Baghdad 1973 - 1975.
He holds the UNESCO Prize for Sustainable Development in 2005, and presided over the Iraqi Council for Culture 2007, as well as assuming the presidency ( the Arab Society for Economic Research), based in Cairo , 1998-2003, and a member of the Board of Trustees (Arab Thought Forum), Amman - Jordan since 1996.  
He served Vice-President of the Organization of African-Asian Solidarity (AAS) and head of its socio-economic team since 1980, member of the Advisory Council for Unemployment Control, Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs 2002, and member of Third World Forum since 1983. 
He is one of the founders of the Arab Organization for Human Rights I am the trustee of several sessions, and the Secretary General (of the WSA) Which included dozens of Iraqi intellectuals and organized seminars on the conditions of Iraq and the effects of political repression and published large studies in 1991.
Al-Hafiz has published a number of publications and research works, including Economic Uses of Oil Revenues, Mechanisms to Raise the Competitiveness of Arab Economic Institutions, Oil and the Arab Economy, Evaluating Experiences of Economic Stability and Structural Adjustment in Arab Countries, Prospects for the Arab-European Partnership ".

The ceremony was held at the headquarters of the Association, Dr. Mazhar Saleh economic adviser to the Prime Minister and representative of the Governor of the Central Bank of Iraq and the President of the Association of Iraqi private banks and a number of representatives of Iraqi banks and a selection of officials in the state departments and media in addition to the son of the late Dr. Khiam Hafiz.

Several speeches were delivered at this ceremony, which was topped by a large picture of the late deceased surrounded by flowers and candles. It was headed by Mr. Wadih al-Hanal, President of the Association of Iraqi Private Banks, in which he praised the various qualitative tenders presented by the great late Iraq and its people in general and the economic sector in particular and its honorable positions which were characterized by boldness and true frankness And the high transparency without taking him to say the word right to a suitable night, stressing that the late was interested in and participate actively in the march of the Association and its various programs and activities, praising his positive initiatives, which was the Institute for Progress in Development Policy one of the choice Which contributed greatly to the development, treatment and consolidation of many of the visions, scenarios, plans and programs of the effective economic and development process in Iraq.

Al-Hafzal said that the departure of Al-Hafiz was a great loss for Iraq and the world because it had a distinguished scientific, political, economic, intellectual and academic status locally, Arab and internationally. Stressing that his son Dr. Khiam and colleagues and friends of the deceased will be the best successor to the good predecessor, calling the Almighty Almighty to accommodate the deceased with great mercy and enter the room.
