(Reuters) - The United States on Tuesday imposed sanctions on Iran's central bank governor and an Iraq-based bank for "moving millions of dollars" for Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard, as Washington seeks to cut off funding it says Tehran is using to fund militant activities overseas.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin accused bank chief Valiollah Seif of covertly funneling money on behalf of the revolutionary guard's external arm, Quds Force (IRGC-QF), through Al-Bilad Islamic Bank "to enrich and support the violent and radical agenda of Hezbollah."

The move cuts off Iran's use of a critical banking network, he said. The United States classifies Lebanon's Shi'ite Muslim movement Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, as a terrorist organization.

If only a couple move away from the dollar, I agree not a big deal, but China is trying to replace the Petrodollar with the Petroyuan... If they succeed it is a game changer. Some financial people are suggesting we should turn our dollars into precious metals as a hedge... I'm considering taking some hard cash and buying more metals... I can always cash them in as needed. A highly keen point, HotCurl, AND The Best Of Your Wednesday To You!!! :tiphat:

One of the keys to Iran's termination of terrorism is to cut it off financially. Barry apparently sent them a life line of nominally 150 billion dollars (possibly the total equivalent to include the value of foreign currencies). At some point THAT money has to run out to fund the international arms and weapons acquisitions. 150 billion dollars is a HUGE chunk of change to buy a whole lotta stuff to reek havoc for some time. Maybe, nominally a year and a half into the Trump administration is perceived to be the time at which Iran is the weakest financially.

So, the Iranians have had their hands in the cookie jar of the CBI daily currency auctions. Do the Iranians really have Iraqi Dinar?  If so, how much? How much USD and other foreign currency does Iran hold? Do other countries have there hand(s) in the cookie jar, too, with Iran and is why they are choosing to align with Iran on the JCPOA? I am not asking these questions to You, I am just thinking out loud. Why in the world would other countries allied with The United States Of America want to support a terrorist regime in Iran when they are experiencing an invasion and terrorism on their own soil? Something really, really stinks here.

Possibly, Iran has to be neutralized and a substantial portion of the Iranian influences removed from Iraq. I think the key is to see who is squealing in the news about The United States Of America pulling out of the JCPOA and who/what is influencing the squealers to take a targeted approach to removing the influential Iranians from Iraq. The successful removal of the Iranian influences in Iraq could be a hold up for the reconstruction, construction, economic development, and foreign investment to be facilitated by the Strategic Framework Agreements (The United States and France) by going from a "closed economy" to an "open economy" with a needed Iraqi Dinar RI/RV. I suspect the Iraqi Dinar RI/RV would be problematic and counterproductive if the Iranians would benefit and have an economic lifeline. Sadr's and Abadi's roles in the upcoming New Government is likely a VERY GOOD thing. I am hoping they are and intend to be on warp speed to form the New Government, remove the Iranians, and get going on what is needed for their own benefit.

Just my thoughts, opinion, and :twocents:

Go Moola Nova (YEAH AND YEE HAW, BABY!!!)!!!

If the world ends the use of the Petrodollar, it will have an immense impact on our economy and ability to influence global politics... I'm not saying it will happen, but if it did the United States would lose a lot of bargaining power on the global stage... We control many decisions because oil is traded in dollars. Should it suddenly be traded in petroyuan, our strength on trade, etc., would be weakened dramatically. Our dollar is backed by the many investors/countries who purchase treasuries and bonds. They know the dollar and oil go together like peanut butter and jelly, if oil is traded differently, that sandwich won't be so tasty.

The list included leaders in the party's Shura Council, which is responsible for decision-making.

Treasury Secretary Steven Menuchin said in a statement that the seven member countries of the TFTC had taken significant steps to disrupt an Iranian-backed "terrorist" group. "TFTC has once again proven its great importance for international security by disrupting the destabilizing influence of Iran and Hezbollah, In the region. "

America: Sadr's victory in the Iraqi elections and sanctions start the defeat of Iran

America: Sadr's victory in the Iraqi elections and sanctions start the defeat of Iran

 Twilight News

A spokesman for the US National Security Council said Iraq was working to counter Iran's bad behavior.

He said in a statement quoted by "Al Arabiya" that Iraq's peaceful, comprehensive and democratic elections over the weekend proved this.

He pointed out that "criticizing Iran and criticizing its bad influence was a big issue among the Iraqi voters and many candidates who won the elections." He clearly indicated that the Sarsoun list had the largest number of seats, representing the Sadrist movement led by Moqtada al-Sadr and his allies He is known for his Arab tendencies and has been challenged by Iran and its allies in Iraq.

The US administration decided to confront the Iranian problem by adopting three clear confrontations. The first is the imposition of sanctions. The second is to stabilize the allies on the ground. The third is to respond to Iranian provocation anywhere and firmly.

In the past few days it seems clear that the Trump administration is determined to speed up the confrontation. The president has been frustrated by the actions of European partners over the past months. Despite repeated hiccups with French President Emmanuel Macaron, Trump has not succeeded in persuading anyone to adopt his demands to reconsider the agreement The Europeans have slowed down in dealing with the missile file and their position on Iranian interventions and sponsorship of terrorism has remained very weak.

The seven member states of the Center for the Targeting of Terrorist Financing have taken significant steps to undermine the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah by including the party's leadership on the terrorism list.

In this context, the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Treasury Department, in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia and the Center for Targeting Terrorism Financing and its other member states, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar, decided to include members of the Hezbollah Supreme Council In the party responsible for the decision-making process within that terrorist organization on the terrorism list.

In this regard, the seven states decided to include Hizbullah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah on the terrorism list alongside Naim Kassem, Mohammed Yazbek, Hussein al-Khalil and Ibrahim al-Amin al-Sayyid under Executive Order 1322, which targets terrorists and those who support them and finance terrorist acts.

The member states of the Center also included the names of Hezbollah and its affiliates on the terrorism list: Talal Safa, Yousuf Sharara, Spectrum Group, Hassan Ibrahimi, Maher Trade Trading Corporation, Hashim Saif al-Din, Adham Tabajah, Al-Enama Group, Al-Enmaa Engineering & Contracting Company, all of whom are already on the terrorism list. Before the United States of America.

US Treasury Secretary Stephen Manucheen said that the Center emphasized in this regard the great impact that would result from the security level of undermining the influence of Hezbollah and Iran in the region by targeting the party's Shura Council and placing it on the terrorism list. He pointed out that the members of the Center categorically rejected the false distinction Between the so-called "political wing" and "Hezbollah's terrorist network".

He added that the orders issued by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard leadership to the Secretary General of the party and the Speaker of the Shura Council, Hassan Nasrallah, are prolonging the human suffering in Syria, increasing the violence in Iraq and Yemen, and putting the Lebanese state and its people at risk. .

This is the second time that the Center has issued a list of terrorists since its establishment on May 21, 2017 to strengthen efforts to undermine terrorist activities and to stop the financing of terrorist acts that threaten the national security of Member States.

The list comes after US President Donald Trump's decision last week to suspend his country's participation in the nuclear deal with Iran, and then start re-imposing US sanctions on Tehran's nuclear activities.

The publication of this list reinforces efforts to undermine Iran's terrorist activities that could destabilize the region through Hezbollah.

French President Emmanuel Macaron said Thursday that the EU should protect its companies operating with Iran from US sanctions, which are being re-imposed because of Tehran's nuclear program.

In response to a question on his arrival at the EU leaders' summit in Bulgaria, he said he was concerned that French oil giant Total may announce that it may withdraw from Iran after the US withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal. It is up to companies operating in various markets to make their own decisions.

He expressed his understanding of the concerns of large companies wishing to protect their US sales, but added that the EU should support smaller companies that want to continue working with Iran.

"Large companies with interests in many countries make their decisions according to their interests. Should have the freedom to do so. "

"But what is important is that companies, especially the medium, which may be less exposed to other markets, the US and others, can make this choice freely."

McCron said France supports the European Commission's proposals on protecting European companies that may be affected by US sanctions on trade with and compensation for Iran.

With regard to broader trade disputes with Washington, he also called for full EU exemption from US tariffs on steel. Europe must protect its "trade sovereignty," he said.

America declares targeting "the empire of Hezbollah's global business"

US announces targeting of "Hezbollah's global business empire"

The US Treasury Department on Thursday imposed new sanctions targeting a network of individuals and entities funding Hezbollah in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
The sanctions were aimed at "disrupting Hezbollah's global business empire in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and uncovering Hezbollah's terrorist networks," the ministry said in a statement.
According to the new sanctions, the ministry has put Hezbollah financier Mohammed Ibrahim Bazzi, Hezbollah's Hezbollah representative in Iran, Ali Safi al-Din on the global terrorism list, and five companies based in Europe, West Africa and the Middle East for being owned or managed by Bazzi and another person on the list.
The companies are Global Trading Group NV, a Belgian energy company. And Euro African Group, a Gambia-based oil company. Premier Investment Group SAL Offshore, Car Asset Services Services Sal Offshore, Africa Middle East Investment Holding and the last three companies headquartered in Lebanon.

Treasury Secretary Stephen Manuchen said in the statement that Hezbollah was using funders like Bazzi, who has ties to drug dealers and money laundering operations to finance terrorism.

He added that these actions highlight "the double behavior of Hezbollah and its Iranian supporters."

"The brutality and malice of Hezbollah's most prominent financiers can not be tolerated," he said, vowing that the US administration would "uncover and disrupt the networks of Hezbollah and Iran at every turn, including those with ties to the central bank."

Mohammed Bazzi

Hizballah has funded and financed millions of dollars for several years through its financial activities in several countries in West Africa, Belgium, Lebanon and Iraq. It has ties to other party financiers who have previously been on the global terrorism list. It also has links with Ayman Jomaa, And the drug trade.

Bazzi was close to the former leader of the Gambia, Yahya Jammeh, whom the ministry said was involved in corruption.

Abdullah Safi al-Din

Is Hezbollah's representative in Iran and close to Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, a channel of communication between Iran and the party, and mediator between the two on financial issues.

He worked with Bazzi to restore political relations between the Gambia and Iran after their differences broke out. He had previously been accused of helping facilitate the access of Iranian officials to the LCB, which was involved in international money laundering.

The two worked with the Central Bank of Iran (formerly accused by the Foreign Assets Control Office of the ministry of providing financial support to the Quds Force) to expand access to banks between Iran and Lebanon.

The new measures come in the wake of President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal signed between Iran and the Group of Six in 2015 and re-impose sanctions on Tehran, the ministry said.

Bazzi is one of the founders of Global Trading Group and the Managing Director of the Belgian-based company. It also has offices in Adol Afrika, and is also the CEO and Managing Director and the largest shareholder in the Pan-African oil company, Euro-Africa Group (EAGL). Gambia, as well as the three Lebanese companies referred to earlier.

On Wednesday, the ministry placed Hezbollah leaders on the terror list and imposed sanctions on them. They were the secretary-general of the party, in addition to the party's deputy secretary-general Naeem Kassem, political advisor to the secretary-general Hussein Khalil, .

The European Union launches a "bullet" to counter US sanctions on Tehran

 2018-05-17
5afdd46b27556.jpg

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced that the European Commission will launch tomorrow the process that allows it to address the US sanctions on European companies that want to invest in Iran.

"We have to move now," Juncker said at a press conference at the end of a European summit in Sofia.

"That's why we are launching the Blocking Statutes Act of 1996, which allows us to address the consequences of US sanctions outside the United States."

"We have to do it, and we will do it tomorrow morning at 10:30 am."

Unker's instrument is a European settlement dating back to 1996 and was originally designed to circumvent the embargo on Korea and now has to be adapted.

The so-called "deregulation" law allows European companies and courts not to be subject to laws relating to sanctions by other countries, and provides that no provision made by foreign courts pursuant to these laws shall be applied.

However, the dispute with the United States over the Cuban embargo has been resolved at the political level, so the effectiveness of this settlement has never been tested.

A European source said their impact could be more symbolic than economic.

State Department Reveals "Steps" to Face Iran

18/05/2018

The United States is seeking to build an international "alliance" against Tehran and its "destabilizing activities," the State Department said Thursday.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will elaborate on the idea on Monday in his first foreign policy speech since taking office last April and will talk in particular about Iran and how to move forward.

"The United States will work hard to build an alliance," State Department spokeswoman Heather Naort said in Washington.

"We will bring together many countries around the world with the specific goal of monitoring the Iranian regime through a more realistic perspective, not only through the nuclear agreement, but through all its destabilizing activities that are not only a threat to the region but to the entire world," she said.

"This is not a coalition hostile to Iran. We clearly distinguish between the Iranian people "and" the Iranian regime, "explaining that" it is about the Iranian regime and its bad deeds. "

Naourt gave the example of the "International Coalition Against a Defiant Organization in Iraq and Syria", launched in 2014 and currently includes 75 countries or institutions, noting that it intervenes militarily to fight the organization, while not determine whether the future coalition against the Iranian regime will also have a military or No.

The spokeswoman said that the State Department had received about 200 foreign ambassadors last Monday to explain to them the decision of US President Donald Trump on the withdrawal from the nuclear agreement signed in 2015 with Iran, and discuss the next steps.

In response to a question about the willingness of Europeans to participate in this new alliance, despite their rejection of Washington's decision to withdraw from the nuclear agreement with Iran, the State Department confirmed that many of the partners of the United States "fully understand" US concerns and "do not overlook" The Iranian position.

I can't see Iran and Iraq revaluing at different times as this would cause trade disparities - this weekend is going to be very telling

I think we witness two rising stars at once - imagine the positive effects that would have on the global economy

But we, the Government and People of the US, just placed a new round of sanctions on Iran. This should place a devaluating pressure on the Irannian currency. All that remains to be seen is how co-operative other countries will be with these new sanctions. And or how much they will cheat behind closed doors the new sanctions inorder to compete and make a buck off of iran. But i am all for the sooner the better for the IQD to revalue. As far as the other stuff, the US recognizing Jerusalem as the capitol of Isreal and a torpedoing of the Palestinian talks ... eh ! No fruit from talking with them  in 60 years is no still no fruit from talking with them in 60 years. The excuse for failure of said talks that the Palestinians propaganda machine places on the failed talks doesn't really matter. I don't  believe they really ever entered into the talks for any reason but to get $$$ outa US. They hate Israel a d thats that.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's atomic energy chief Ali Akbar Salehi on Saturday threatened to resume uranium enrichment by 20 percent if Europe failed to comply with its nuclear deal, which the United States pulled out earlier this month.
Salhi's threat came at a news conference in Tehran with European Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canetti, who is currently visiting Iran.

Under the agreement in 2015, Iran curbed its nuclear program in return for lifting most of the sanctions imposed by the West, which took place in early 2016.

According to the agreement, Iran's uranium enrichment should not exceed 3.67 percent for 10 years.

Low-enriched uranium can be used in nuclear power plants, while nuclear weapons production requires a high level of enrichment of 90 percent.

The European official is trying to reassure the Iranians about continuing oil purchases and protecting European companies operating in Iran, despite US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the deal and impose tough sanctions on Tehran.

"We have sent a message to our Iranian friends that the Europeans will remain committed to the agreement as long as the Iranians are committed to it," Kanti said. They said the same thing on their part. '

  • US State Department says the coalition will not be “anti-Iran” because the US stands “firmly behind” the country’s people, in contrast to the regime and its “bad actions.”
  • Citing Iran's failure to curb its destabilization activities, President Donald Trump pulled out the US from the Iran nuclear accord, to the anger of US allies.

WASHINGTON: The US wants to build a global “coalition” against the Tehran regime and its “destabilizing activities,” the State Department said on Thursday, after pulling out from the Iran nuclear accord to the anger of US allies.
The plan is to be detailed on Monday by the top United States diplomat, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in his first major foreign policy address since taking office in April.
“The US will be working hard to put together a coalition,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters.
The aim is to “bring together a lot of countries from around the world with the specific goal of looking at the Iranian regime through a more realistic lens” which would include “all of its destabilizing activities that aren’t just a threat to the region but are a threat to the broader world,” she said.
Nauert added that the coalition will not be “anti-Iran” because the US stands “firmly behind” the country’s people, in contrast to the regime and its “bad actions.”
She evoked a comparison with the US-led international coalition against the Daesh group in Syria and Iraq.
Begun in 2014, that coalition now counts as members 75 countries or institutions and intervened militarily against the jihadists, although only a minority of coalition members have conducted most of that military action, which has left the extremists nearly defeated on that battlefield.
Nauert did not say whether the proposed coalition against Iran’s regime would have a military component.
She said the State Department received on Monday about 200 foreign diplomats to explain to them President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the nuclear accord, and the next steps.
In a breakthrough that ended a 12-year standoff over Western fears that Iran was developing a nuclear bomb, the administration of former president Barack Obama and other major powers reached the accord with Iran in 2015.
It lifted punishing international sanctions in return for Iran’s agreement to freeze its nuclear effort.
Withdrawing from the deal last week, Trump called for a new agreement with deeper restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program as well as curbs on its ballistic missiles and its backing for militant groups across the Middle East.
Along with Iran the other signatories of the 2015 deal — France, Britain, Germany, China and Russia — strongly criticized the US withdrawal.
On Thursday the European Union said it will begin moves to block the effect of reimposed US sanctions on Iran as efforts to preserve the nuclear deal deepened a transatlantic rift.
Asked about the potential willingness of European nations to join the proposed new coalition, Nauert said many US allies “fully understand” and are “not turning a blind eye” to Iran’s actions.

  • A coalition is the way to go because history has shown that unilateral actions were less successful in standing against Iran's destabilizing behavior, says Dr. Majid Rafizadeh.
  • Oubai Shahbandar, a Syrian-American analyst, says countering Iran's network will require a great unity of effort among all the Arab states.

JEDDAH: Washington's plan to build a global “coalition” is a welcome against the Tehran regime "is a must", according to one Mideast expert.

"The Iranian regime's modus operandi is to expand its influence, export its extremist ideology, and impose its revolutionary principles regionally, globally and domestically," Harvard scholar and Iranian affairs expert Majid Rafizadeh told Arab News.
"In order to confront the Iranian regime and contain it effectively, it should be confronted at all levels," he said.

The US State Department revealed the plan on Thursday, saying the coalition is needed to stop the Tehran regime's “destabilizing activities.”

“The US will be working hard to put together a coalition,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters. US President Donald Trump had earlier decided to pull the US out of the Iran nuclear deal, saying that the deal failed to stop Iran from pursuing its nuclear ambitions and causing chaos in the Middle East.

Rafizadeh said history had shown that unilateral actions were less successful in standing against Iran's destabilizing behavior.

"The creation of such a coalition is overdue and it should have been created when the fundamentalist Islamic Republic was founded in 1979," he said.

"A global coalition will be more effective in confronting the Iranian regime's military adventurism across the region. In addition, such a coalition will be effective in delegitimizing the ruling mullahs in the eyes of the Arab and Muslim world," he said.

Oubai Shahbandar, a Syrian-American analyst and fellow at the New America Foundation's International Security Program, said if such a coalition were to succeed, the US would have to invest a significant amount of resources.

"Iran has had a headstart and established a robust proxy network throughout the Middle East and the Arabian Gulf," he pointed out. "The irony is of course that the US has military forces stationed alongside some of the Iranian-backed militias in Syria, so the Trump administration will have to be prepared for a potential violent response by Iranian-trained auxiliaries."

According to Shahbandar, countering Iran's network will require a great unity of effort among all the Arab states. "Otherwise Washington won't be able to succeed on this front," he added.

Trump Options in Iraq

Fatima Yassin
A Syrian writer living in Turkey

The plans of the current US president, Donald Trump , seem almost entirely devoted to confronting Iran. After the "bombardment" he sought with North Korea , and the agreement on a summit meeting, the confrontation with Iran was not a direct military attack, Which spread throughout the Middle East, from Syria to Yemen, and to Lebanon, where Trump has approved a series of harsh sanctions against Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, his deputy and his aide, along with a range of his economic and political activities.
The most important front in which Iran is effectively located and competing against the American presence is the Iraqi arena, which has just emerged from a harsh battle with the organization of the Islamic state. The last step in this arena was the parliamentary elections, which saw coalitions created by the war on terror, and the interactions with Iran and America, and The Kurdish situation in the north, and this was clearly reflected on the ballot papers.
A coalition of heterogeneous mix, led by a ruthless cleric, Moqtada al-Sadr, won first place, and Sadr is a religious symbol that may seem inappropriate to communist and nationalist groups and some secularists who have allied themselves with him under the slogan of fighting corruption. The poorest in the Iraqi capital, Sadr City, which holds the largest number of supporters of this trend. This man is distinguished by his hostility to the American presence in Iraq, and his militias have carried out operations against the American presence In the early days of the invasion. In addition to this position, there is another position, namely, its hostility to Iranian interference. It is natural that Iraqi Shiite groups gather behind Sadr's chest, shouting "to get Iran out," and this is the trend that has won the most votes in all of Iraq. Hostility to America and hostility to Iran, hostile positions of corruption and symbols of the figures in the leaders of the other electoral lists, and an attempt to draw attention once again to the suffering of the simple citizen.
The Sadrist movement, called Surson, follows another party composed of a coalition of military militias, originally founded by Iran, and supported by it. Its leaders have strong and direct links with Iran, more than with Iraqi leaders. These militias were united under the title of "conquest" or "popular mobilization" led by Hadi al-Amiri. Despite the fact that this trend of bad sectarian reputation, but the backbone of the forces that confronted the authority of the Islamic state, and forced them out of the main cities of Iraq, and trapped in small pockets scattered.
What gives a fair formula to this electoral position in Iraq is the status of the alliance of "victory", which won the third place in the number of votes, the current current prime minister, Haider Abadi, also has strong ties with Iran, and relations with the same force with America. In an accurate look at the Iraqi parliamentary elections, the developed forces are distributed regularly, and perhaps even inoperative, which may result in a government that is unproductive and incapable of making a decision to stand with any party. This will include a new task for the White House. Is enough to make Iran lose ground on the Iraqi front, which is a powerful depth of its front in Syria. The outcome of America's battle with Iran in Iraq may be crucial to its battle in Syria as well.

Iran's Consulates across Iraq to Replace Dollar with Dinar, Euro
  •

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian consulates across Iraq will replace dollar with local currency (dinar) and euro for paying the costs of consular services, including visa issuance, in the next few days.

Iran's diplomatic missions will receive either the Iraqi dinar or euro for their consular services as of Tuesday (May 22), the Iranian consulates in Iraq announced on Friday.

The Iranian consulates, meantime, said that the US dollar will not be accepted anymore.

The decision was made in line with removal of dollar from the banking operations of the Iranian missions abroad.

The decision comes after US President Donald Trump announced on May 8 his decision to withdraw Washington from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, vowing to reinstate the sanctions against Tehran that were lifted as a result of the agreement.

The foreign ministers of Germany, the United Kingdom and France have issued a joint statement saying their countries will stay in the JCPOA even if the United States pulls out of it.

What a fudge cluster . It was surprising to me that Iran even has an embassy in Iraq  . Sadr has no love for the Iran ,and neither does the US  . "an enemy of my enemy is my friend  "   There was no love lost between the US and Sadr  . We invaded Iraq , and Sadr fought back ,killing many US troops .  I can't heap blame on him for that , the wolf was at the door.   He appears to have laid low in 2014 ,which coincides with Obama "s retreat  . From what I gather  , he is the people's leader ,and represents the street . The people felt that they were not being represented  by the powers that be .   Funny how nobody  saw this coming  , like Trump  winning the election .
