Trump deletes tweets after backing Alabama primary loser

US President Donald Trump has deleted several tweets endorsing a candidate he backed in an Alabama election after he crashed to defeat on Tuesday.

"Luther Strange has been shooting up in the Alabama polls since my endorsement," Mr Trump wrote in one now-removed post.

He campaigned for Mr Strange, but could not save him from defeat to ultraconservative firebrand Roy Moore.

The underdog's victory has sent shockwaves through Washington.

Things Republican Roy Moore believes

In one now-deleted Tweet, the president said Mr Strange "will never let you down!" according to news website ProPublica, which documents Mr Trump's posts.

In another, the president said "vote today for 'Big Luther'".

A lesson for the president

Analysis:By Anthony Zurcher, BBC North America reporter

Alabama Senator Luther Strange is disappearing down the memory hole.

As in George Orwell's 1984, where politically inconvenient information is scrubbed from the records, Donald Trump is airbrushing over past support for the soon-to-be-former senator.

It's just part of the president's efforts to mend fences with his Make America Great Again base and their more impassioned advocates.

Getting back in favour with Mr Moore's supporters shouldn't be too hard for Mr Trump, given there were few who seemed to believe his heart was in the Strange endorsement.

They thought the president was mistaken or being misled, and he would eventually come around. It didn't take long.

If there's a lesson the president will take from all this, it may be that he shouldn't try too hard to push his supporters in a direction they don't want to go.

And if you're a Washington politician seeking re-election next year, it's best to assume you're going to be on your own.

Early on Wednesday, Mr Trump changed his tune to congratulate Mr Moore on his victory.

"Sounds like a really great guy who ran a fantastic race. He will help to #MAGA!" he tweeted, referring to his "Make America Great Again" catchphrase.

The Republican president has been known previously to occasionally delete tweets, most often replacing them after correcting spelling errors or other mistakes.

Some watchdog groups have criticised the deletions, saying that the tweets are government records that must be preserved for the historical record.

Mr Moore rode a wave of support in the Republican primary from the same grassroots conservative movement that helped elect Mr Trump.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell spent nearly $9m on Mr Strange's campaign.

But Mr Moore derided his opponent as an "establishment lackey".

With all 67 counties reporting, the outspoken evangelical Christian led the incumbent by 55% to 45%.

Mr Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence both appeared with Mr Strange at rallies in Alabama.

The president had tweeted support for him at least 10 times.

During a campaign appearance for Mr Strange last week, Mr Trump told the crowd "I might have made a mistake" in endorsing the former Alabama attorney general.

Mr Strange was appointed to the Alabama Senate seat after Jeff Sessions joined the Trump administration as attorney general.

A White House aide told CNN on Wednesday that the president felt "embarrassed" by Mr Strange's loss.

Political website Axios reports that Mr Trump blames Mr McConnell and "has taken to physically mocking" him.

Mr Moore, 70, is best known for twice losing his position on the Alabama Supreme Court.

He was de-benched the first time for refusing to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the courthouse and again for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licences.

Mr Moore is now the heavy favourite for Alabama's special election in December against a Democrat.

Alabama has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in a quarter of a century.

It would appear Mr. Moore thinks quite a lot of himself.

To me, whenever someone uses the idea that everything they do is "god", as if that somehow underscores

whatever they do, and should not be questioned. That is a very old trick, often used by both

politics and religion to make the person appear as a chosen one in their particular position.

I think folks need to be aware of how certain tricks are played and how those who play them believe it

gives them an advantage. The only advantage it gives is they know their claim will appeal to enough people

that are their target supporters. the veracity of their claim is always suspect.

Just my thoughts...thanks B/A  :)

Can't anyone else see the reality of Moor's election win?

Just the same as the 2016 POTUS election, this isn't about Trump.

More and more Americans are understandably fed up with business as usual, and realizing they each have to rise above the deceptive dem/con paradigme the press so faithfully promotes in an attempt to keep the establishment parties in power.

Yes, there are probably millions of innocent kids who are victims of the progressives brainwashing at schools and some may not see the truth for decades, but  the intense posture taken by liberals is having the opposite effect they intended.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see through the lies, a degree in constitutional studies isn't required for any intelligent and morally honest individual to recognize the lawlessness of either establishment political party.

And everywhere the working class is sick and tired of being forced to watch America continue to get destroyed piece by piece.

Everywhere there are a majority of liberals or establishment cons  there is widespread corruption, collusion, bigotry, tyranny, and oppression.

And we are tired of it.

Perhaps the anti-Trumpers will one day wake up and realize they are were their own worst enemy and they hurt themselves as much as they are holding back the attempt to rebuild America, although I doubt there are many of them left who are capable of genuine honesty.

Trump's election was only a symptom of the "issue" with mainstream America, the root cause is we are not going to take it anymore.

This is what the mainstream media is desperately trying not to acknowledge.

Unfortunately for them, the days of a few editors deciding what "truth" is fed to America based on agenda are long gone, just as, in spite of all the gender bending and same sex promoting by socialists who are trying to destroy the bedrock of our morality todays millennials are as a collective more family based than we seen in decades, the truth cannot be hidden forever.

Maybe I'm just the eternal optimist, but I'm seeing a revolution continue to sweep the nation as we finally begin the drain the swamp ourselves.

Trump personified our disgust for everyone establishment, but as the entire world just witnessed, it isn't about him, it's about us... JMHO

Personally I wouldn't base the direction of American society on those in Alabama.... Have you ever been to Alabama???? Just a bit behind the times shall we say?

I don't usually reply to these tit-for-tat threads but you just "yanked my chain".  My family comes from Alabama - I have relatives all over the state of Alabama - and there is nothing backward about the state or the citizens who live there. Auburn University is just down the road from my grandparents home. Why would you think Alabama is "a bit behind the times". Sounds like a generalization based on lack of knowledge to me.

OR was your statement made out of northern arrogance for a culture and people that you know nothing about personally.

You are responding because you assume I know nothing about the culture...

You ask why would I think they are a bit behind the times? I have lived in the south since 1987... I live 20 miles from the Alabama state line. I have spent a lot of time in Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville and on Sand Mountain. The overall experience I have had is the state is beautiful. The people are genuine. Their culture is a bit behind the times. Huntsville is an awesome city. It is cultured, sophisticated and advanced. I think the influx of NASA personnel has had a huge influence. Birmingham, not so much and Montgomery even less. On Sand Mountain there is a sign that says "if you are black do not be here when the sun goes down" and the people they are proud of the sign and tell you that's the way it is. That is a bit scary in this day and age. As for Auburn, I have worked at football games there. It is a beautiful town and the influence of the college makes it different than most of the state. It is progressive with it's young population.

My point was simply most American do not feel the same way most Alabama citizens do. In most of the country people would not applaud or vote for a judge who thinks his can override the law. He was thrown off the bench for his lack of legal integrity...

I agree there are many great folks in Alabama, I just don't believe the rest of the country see things the same way. I didn't attack their religious beliefs (although it is the only state I've met snake handlers). I didn't attack their patriotic love of America. As for the Stars and Bars, well that is a sign of treason and should be outlawed. It is a symbol used by people who took arms against our government. It would be like flying David Koresh's flag. He and those from the Confederate are enemies of the state.

It's ok Granny, I'm sure B/A and the rest of her God hating, Hugh Hefner loving communist  really think it's a good thing how they brought the United States of America from Leave it to Beaver and Andy Griffith show to open pornography on billboards in just 50 years. They actually believe they have brought us into a better civilization.

But us boys from Mississippi we understand and we love our neighbors to the east Over Yonder in Alabama.

I do remember that time when roll tide and the Mississippi Mud ducks got together on the alabama-mississippi border there's about to have a civil war , Dem Boys from Alabama they grabbed a bunch of hand grenades and threw them across the border at the Mississippi boys. You know what those Mississippi boys did? They picked dem up, pull the pins and threw em back.

Oh the good old days when barbecue and bottle rockets ruled the roost. They said when we drank bourbon on the porch it was alcoholism, we just call it 5 in the afternoon. Sophistication at its finest. We love you Granny

You  clearly have no idea what the Civil War was about. It was about states rights and freedom. It had nothing to do with slavery. It was made about slavery by the traitor Abraham Lincoln who wrongfully took away Posse Comitatus in the middle of the Civil War and made slavery illegal. He did this for one reason only, he did not want history to remember what the war was really fought over. The stars and bars have nothing to do with slavery or treason. The truth be told it was the north that wanted to remove states rights and take us off the Constitution they were successful in their operation. For we have not been operating under the Constitution since the Civil War. Which is why our government officials get away with doing the things that they do.

So you are so "intelligent and knowledgeable" that you presume to know what "most Americans" feel.  Sorry, but now you are trying to assume some superior status.

I currently live in Texas and participate in our local government. I can tell you that "most" of the people in my part of the state are just like the folks in Alabama. We do applaud when people stand up for the constitution and our rights.

Sorry I disagree.... The Stars and Bars represent the Confederacy. A group of people who took arms against our country. I do agree the war was about money.

I presume nothing... Research shows most Americans are for progress not going backwards. The element of Americans who want to stagnate is the minority. Even the last election proved the majority voted against the minority, it was the Electoral College that decided the election not American voters. This mentality that we need to go back to the 50's isn't new. Throughout history there have been those who like the old ways better... Thank God we still don't use leeches to cure our ills.

Boy did you ever just proved my point. And by the way do you  actually think that getting rid of the Electoral College is a good thing? Show me throughout history just one single time where mob rule was good for Humanity. Because without the Electoral College mob rule is what you will have.

And with the Electoral College, corporate control is what we now have. It wasn't always that way, but once they let the corporations contribute to campaigns we lost our country... I work with politicians and they will tell you behind closed doors, they don't work for the guy who gives $50, $100 or $500, they work for the big money or they cannot win.
