I just wanted to follow up on my email from earlier this week. Congress acted quickly to pass a bipartisan aid package to help the millions of Americans affected by Hurricane Harvey. Today, with Republicans and Democrats by my side, I signed that legislation and sent it to the president's desk to become law.

As a nation, please join me in continued prayers for everyone in Texasand Louisiana as they rebuild their communities, as well as for the people of Florida as Hurricane Irma moves through the region.

53-second video: Texas Strong In this country, when citizens see each other in need, they step up, and they answer the call. And as Speaker of the House, I am proud to be able to announce that the federal government is stepping up too. Today, the House of Representatives passed an initial aid package to help the families and communities affected by Hurricane Harvey.

You turn on the TV in America today—you look at all the vitriol, the bitterness, the rioting—and you begin to wonder whether or not our civil society is holding together. This hurricane shows that it is. In the face of unprecedented rainfall and devastation, Americans are helping each other, and I am confident that our country will emerge from the storm stronger than ever before.
