Local sources in the Tal Afar district reported on Wednesday the gradual disappearance of members of the Dahedsh checkpoint in the town of Tal Afar since it took control more than two years ago. 

An Iraqi security source said on the outskirts of Tal Afar in a press statement, quoting local residents, that 'most of the elements of the people present at the points located in the main streets and sub-inside the judiciary to the headquarters and secret tunnels dug by the organization'. 

The source, who asked not to be named, said that 'armed supporters are calling in very few numbers with the start of the campaign of aerial bombardment of the strongholds of the organization since yesterday'. 

The source pointed out that 'there are bodies of supporters on two main streets of the center of the judiciary seem to have died as a result of aerial bombardment'.

Minister of Defense Irfan al-Hayali dismissed the announcement of the start of the battle to recapture Tal Afar, while the Popular People's Militia announced in advance that it would take the decision to start the battle, referring to conflicting statements and lack of real coordination on the beginning of military operations.

The air strikes targeted the military positions of the organization intensively, according to former spokesman for the Ministry of Defense Brigadier Mohammed al-Khudari.

Amidst the debate over the date of the start of the battle of Tal Afar, al-Khudari was dismissed from office, stressing before the decision to remove him the readiness of Iraqi forces to advance to all areas controlled by the Daqash.

Underground tunnel collapses on 12 Islamic State members in Tal Afar

Twelve Islamic State militants died Thursday when an underground tunnel they were using collapsed in the town of Tal Afar, west of Nineveh, a paramilitary leader said.

Speaking to Alsumaria News, Jabbar al-Maamouri, a commander at the Popular Mobilization Forces, said the militants scurried to the tunnel escaping an air strike. “The strike hit the tunnel’s opening, killing all inside, according to the information we have,” Maamouri stated.

The militants raised alert among members to extract the buried corpses, and did manage to the some out, he said, adding that the group had escalated the digging of tunnels which had usually been used as escape routes or for assaulting security forces.

Tal Afar is 65 kilometers west of Mosul, and is home to a mixed Turkmen and Arab population. Iraqi forces recaptured Mosul, Islamic State’s former capital, early July after more than eight months of U.S.-backed offensives.

Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi and his defense officials have marked Tal Afar as their next target of anti-Islamic State action. Iraqi defense officials said recently that warplanes were carrying out raids on the enclave in preparation for the ground invasion which is yet to be scheduled.

Tal Afar has reportedly seen divisions among Islamic State leaderships, with occasional news telling of power conflicts and dissents among leaders, as well as attempts by some militants to flee the anticipated battle field.

Since Iraqi forces launched a wide-scale campaign to retake Mosul in 2016, paramilitary troops managed to isolate the town from the Syrian borders and from the rest of Nineveh.

Storming Tal Afar 'ISIS-held city' 'likely' to be on Monday - officer

 

Up to 75 ISIS strongholds have been bombarded in Iraqi air raids in Tal Afar, Al Ayadiah, and Mahalabia areas, an army officer at the Ninth Armored Division told The Baghdad Post Friday.

He added that these air raids came in preparation for retaking Tal Afar from ISIS grip.

The most important target to these raids is to open a route for the Iraqi forces to storm Tal Afar city, that it may be on August 21, he continued. 

Earlier, Popular Mobilization Forces declared that they have sent their forces to Tal Afar, while other media sources said that several of these forces have deployed near the city.

On Friday morning, Iraqi Federal Police seized an ISIS weapons depot in the Old City of Mosul. Also, the Federal police forces have deployed near the city ahead of the offensive.

Remember the first desert storm? Stormin' Norman Schwartzkopf and US military took the whole country in 100 days. Bush and the UN shoulda let him take Baghdad too. This whole mess would have been done back in the 90's. Once Mosul was done, the Iraqis should have done the 'ol German blitzkrieg and surrounded Tal Afar the next day. Not give them 5 weeks to prepare. When ya got em on the run....you run em over.

Exclusive: Counter Terrorism commander excluded from Tal Afar operations

 

 

Iraq Counter Terrorism  Service (ICTS) Lt. Gen Abdul Wahab Al-Saadi said that he will not participate in the expected operations aiming at regaining Tal Afar west of Mosul from ISIS terrorist group.

In exclusive statements to MENA, he added that the reason is a military not a political one.

 

He underlined that he will stay in Baghdad and will not accompany troops heading to Tal Afar city.

 

Earlier, The Baghdad Post said that the Iraqi leadership had ordered to exclude Saadi from participating in Tal Afar operations.

 

An army officer at the 9th Armored Division told The Baghdad Post that Iraqi forces are expected to storm Tal Afar city on Monday.
