A security source said that the dead in the ranks of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces were killed by an explosive device in the province of Kirkuk late on Thursday night - Friday.

The source told Asharq Al-Awsat that the device exploded on a Peshmerga force in the village of Tamour, which lies about 40 kilometers south of the city of Kirkuk.

He said the blast killed three Peshmerga forces, including a lieutenant colonel, and wounded two others.

The Peshmerga forces control the province of Kirkuk since the Iraqi army fled from them in front of advancing progress in the summer of 2014, with the exception of the province of Hawija, located south-west of the province.

Al-Hawija militants have launched attacks on the rest of the province over the past three years, causing casualties among both Kurdish and civilian forces.
