ISIL’s Baghdadi is still alive and in Syria: Iraqi Intelligence

By

 News Desk

17/07/2017

(TASS) The leader of the Islamic State terror group (outlawed in Russia) Abu Bakr al-Baghdidi is alive and and is hiding in Syria, Al Arabiya television channel said on Sunday, citing director of Iraqi interior ministry’s intelligence and counter-terrorism operations service, Abu Ali al-Basri.

According to Al Arabiya, al-Basri refuted reports about al-Baghdadi’s death, saying he is still hiding in Syria, but not in the province of Raqqa, the Islamic States’ stronghold.

Al Sumaria television channel said on July 11 citing a source in Iraq’s Nineveh province that Islamic State militants had reported the death of their leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

According to the television channel, Islamic State issued a brief statement on al-Baghdadi’s death where they said the name of a “new caliph” would be announced soon.

Earlier, Iranian mass media circulated photos confirming al-Baghdadi’s death.

Russia’s defense ministry reported in mid-June that al-Baghdadi and 300 more Islamic State militants had been presumably killed in a Russian airstrike on Raqqa’s southern suburb.

On July 14, US Defense Secretary James Mattis said the US side could not confirm al-Baghdadi’s death.

An Iraqi intelligence officer said Sunday that Daesh leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was still alive.

Last month, the Russian Defense Ministry media said that al-Baghdadi was believed to have been killed in an airstrike in Syria.

U.S. officials, however, said they don't have any proof confirming the Daesh leader's death.

"Al-Baghdadi is still hiding in Syria in an area outside [the northern Syrian province of] Raqqah," Abu Ali al-Basri, the head of the intelligence and anti-terrorism department at the Iraqi Interior Ministry, told the local Al-Sabah newspaper

I knew it. The pictures of the dead guy next to Baghdadis picture in the Al Nouri mosque didn't look like the same guy. You could tell by the shape of his nose. Totally different than the guy laying there. Look closely and you will agree. If I was the most wanted man in the world, I would want people to think I'm dead, too.

NYT Blames Obama Officials For Foiled Attack On ISIS Leader

4:13 PM 07/23/2017

The New York Times blamed former Obama administration officials for releasing information that a U.S. general says allowed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi to slip away from American forces.

Gen. Tony Thomas, oversees Special Operations Command, told Fox News’ Catherine Herridge last week that his team was “particularly close” to al Baghdadi in May 2015 after killing a top ISIS official, Abu Sayyaf, and capturing his wife, who reportedly provided intelligence to U.S. forces. The Pentagon announced Sayyaf’s death and the capture of his wife in a press release the same day.

The NYT published a story on June 8, 2015 titled, “A Raid on ISIS Yields a Trove of Intelligence,” citing unnamed U.S. officials who shared “confidential intelligence assessments” with the NYT.

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst –

The NYT cited “five senior American officials” who “provided additional details about the materials recovered from the house of Abu Sayyaf, a nom de guerre for a Tunisian militant whom American authorities have since identified as Fathi ben Awn ben Jildi Murad al-Tunisi.” The officials, according to the NYT, spoke “only on the condition of anonymity to discuss confidential intelligence assessments.”

Information obtained from the 2015 raid “was a very good lead,” Gen. Thomas said last week. “Unfortunately, it was leaked in a prominent national newspaper about a week later and that lead went dead.” Thomas did not name the NYT specifically, but Herridge noted that he appeared to be referencing the NYT story.

Following Fox News’ reporting on Gen. Thomas’s comments, President Trump said in a tweet that “The Failing New York Times foiled U.S. attempt to kill the single most wanted terrorist, Al-Baghdadi.” Trump accused the NYT of putting their “sick agenda over National Security.”

The paper ran a “fact check” article on Sunday disputing Trump’s claims. The NYT blamed instead the Obama officials who released the information. NYT reporter Michael Gordon noted that “the information in the Times article on June 8 came from United States government officials who were aware that the details would be published.”

Gordon also questioned then-Defense Secretary Ash Carter’s decision to publish a statement about the successful raid.

“If the military wanted to exploit the information from Umm Sayyaf about Mr. Baghdadi’s movements, why did the Pentagon rush to announce her capture on the day of the raid?” Gordon asked.

The NYT article stated as fact that the paper’s reporting hadn’t “‘foiled’ an attempt by the United States military to kill Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State.”

Trump accuses US newspaper of thwarting attempt to kill «Baghdadi»

24/7/2017 12:00 AM

Baghdad / Al-Sabah
US President Donald Trump confirmed that newspaper leaks published by the New York Times caused a failed attempt by US forces to kill the leader of the terrorist organization called Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
"The failed New York Times thwarted the United States' attempt to kill the wanted terrorist," Trump wrote on his official Twitter page. "This is an example of her bad faith national security agenda." According to Agence France-Presse, Trump appears to refer to statements made by US General Tony Thomas at a press conference in Aspen, Colorado, in which he asserted that US special forces were "very close" to the leader of the "Daqsh" organization in 2015, but lost its impact after newspaper leaks "It was very good progress, but unfortunately it was revealed in a major national newspaper in about a week and this progress is no longer useful. It is necessary to inform the American public of what we are doing. It is also essential to acknowledge what seriously hampers our ability to Do our job ». The New York Times, published in June 2015, wrote that US forces had put their hands on a large amount of information detailing how to conceal the leader of the «Dahesh», and the article in particular, the use of leaders «urging» their women to exchange messages between them.
The New York Times asked the White House to "clarify the Trump tweet." The administration told Politico that "if the president refers to this article in 2015, the Pentagon has not protested to the newspaper before the article was published in 2015, No public complaint has been made by a US official yet. "
This is not the first time Trump has attacked the newspaper, such as CNN and the Washington Post. The irony is that he singled out the New York Times this week with a long exclusive interview.

A local source in the province of Sharqat, Salahaddin province on Saturday, the presence of the leader of the organization urged Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in the left coast of Alchrotob and he survived a US air strike recently.

The source said in an exclusive statement to the twilight News that "Baghdadi was seen in the village of Sheikh Hamad in the city of Irakat, surrounded by protectors and elements calling from foreign nationalities non-Iraqi."

He said that "Baghdadi recently survived an air strike targeting a large headquarters of a leadership in the village of Sheikh Hamad and killed 20 terrorists, including three Arab terrorists," without mentioning the exact time of the raid.

"US forces continue their reconnaissance and search campaigns in the villages of al-Sharqat to hunt al-Baghdadi amid a large media blackout," the source said, quoting eyewitnesses in the villages of the left coast of al-Shoroot.

On June 16, 2017, Russia had killed al-Baghdadi in a raid on the Syrian city of Raqqa. But the leadership of the US-led international coalition against the organization has commented that it is unable to refute or confirm this news.

Al-Baghdadi, 46, is an Iraqi whose real name is Ibrahim al-Samarrai. He split from al-Qaeda in 2013, two years after al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed.

Baghdadi was brought up in a religious family and studied Islamic jurisprudence in Baghdad and joined the Salafi jihadists in 2003, the year of the invasion of Iraq. The Americans arrested him and then released him about a year later because they considered him a civilian and not a military target.

The international coalition is likely to be al-Baghdadi still alive

01/09/2017

(Independent) .. The leader of the international coalition against the organization of a preacher in Iraq and Syria, General Stephen Townsend, to be the leader of the extremist organization Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is still alive and hiding somewhere in the Euphrates Valley.

"We're looking for him every day. I do not think he died. "

General Townsend acknowledged that he had no "idea" of the whereabouts of al-Baghdadi. He explained that he believed the terrorist organization's leader was likely to escape with other terrorists to the Euphrates valley, an area stretching between Syria and Iraq after the attack by the International Alliance and its allies Localists against the organization's strongholds in Mosul, Tall Afar and Raqqa.

"The last battle of Dahedash will be in the Euphrates valley," he said.

"When we find him, I think we will first try to kill him. He probably does not deserve to try to arrest him. "

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced the death of Baghdadi in early July. This was not the first time al-Baghdadi was killed. On June 22, the Russian military indicated the "possibility" that al-Baghdadi had been killed.

But the US secretary said: "I have not seen any convincing evidence, intelligence or rumor from any source about his death ... There are also indications in the intelligence channels that he is still alive."

Since 2014, there have been many rumors about the death of the leader of the jihadi organization, but none has been confirmed.

The United States is offering $ 25 million to arrest this person.

The last audiotape of al-Baghdadi was broadcast in November 2016.

The only public appearance of al-Baghdadi, a 46-year-old Iraqi, dates back to July 2014 when he performed prayers at the Grand Mosque of Nuri al-Kabir, west of Mosul, where he announced the establishment of the Caliphate in large areas of Iraq and Syria.

The commander of the coalition forces is likely to be the last battle with a preacher in this region

The Washington-led coalition commander, Stephen Townsend, is likely to be alive and expected to be somewhere in the middle of the Euphrates River valley and be the last battle in the region.

"Baghdadi is still alive and is likely to be hiding somewhere in the Euphrates valley," Townsend told a news conference on Thursday. "I do not think he died, we are looking for him every day." "When we find him, I think we're going to try to kill him, maybe it's not worth it to do more to arrest him."

The commander of the coalition forces said that the buses of armed supporters are still in the areas of the Syrian army, and that the coalition will try to disrupt the arrival of armed supporters to the areas of control of the organization in eastern Syria.

Information was conflicting about the killing of Baghdadi, and media reports recently announced his death.

The Russian army announced on June 22 that al-Baghdadi had been killed in a raid on the Syrian province of Raqqa.

A senior Kurdish official confirmed on July 17 to Reuters that al-Baghdadi is still alive and dead south of the Syrian capital.

The Syrian opposition Observatory said on July 11 that it had confirmed information about the killing of al-Baghdadi, while the Pentagon indicated that there was no information to confirm this. A senior White House adviser said Washington had not yet been able to verify a report on al-Baghdadi's death.

The leader of the so-called "Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula" Qasem al-Rimi had revealed on February 5 the killing of al-Baghdadi in an American landing that left 14 dead men and 11 children and a woman in the central province of Yemen.

The defeats of the Islamic state increase the isolation of Baghdadi

With the fall of the cities 'Islamic Caliphate' is no longer the only Baghdadi between the Syrian border, Iraq and Jordan protected from air raids and land attacks.

Narrowing the screws on Baghdadi

PARIS - The successive defeats suffered by the Islamic state have tightened the grip on its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who lives in secret, surrounded by a narrow circle of his loyalists, experts and officials say.

As the cities of the "Islamic Caliphate" fell one after the other, from Mosul and Raqqa to Tal Afar and soon Deir al-Zour, under intense strikes by the international coalition, Baghdadi, who had occupied the world and terrorized everywhere, now had a remote area in the Euphrates valley between the Syrian and Iraqi borders Jordan is shielded from air raids and land attacks.

This desert region, inhabited by Sunni tribes, has become unmanageable to governments, the last bastion of the organization and the remaining hope for it to unleash a guerrilla war in the coming years.

"It seems that al-Baghdadi and his driver Abu Abd al-Latif al-Jubouri and his correspondent Massoud al-Kurdi are in the Euphrates valley between al-Bu Kamal (in Syria) and al-Qaim (in Iraq) because they were seen several times there," said Iraqi researcher Hisham al-Hashemi, a specialist in jihadist movements.

The organization's policy is based on a system similar to that adopted by the Taliban after its defeat in Afghanistan in 2001, according to the researcher, "moving from an organization that controls the land to a group capable of carrying out large terrorist operations. It has great military and security expertise to do so, Finance ".

Difficult to reach

Al-Baghdadi has been killed several times after air strikes that he tried to destroy, but this man, who only appeared once after delivering a Friday sermon after his inauguration, is still alive. He lives in the Euphrates Valley, according to US General Stephen Townsend, Organization in Iraq and Syria.

"I have not seen any convincing evidence, intelligence or rumor from any source of his death, but there are intelligence indications that he is still alive," Townsend said in early September.

"The last battle with the Islamic state will be in the valley," he said. "When we find him (Baghdadi) I think we will try to kill him first, and there is probably no point in trying to capture him."

The American expert Aaron Zellen is also likely to be al-Baghdadi hiding in that border triangle, whether in the village of Umm in a cave near the river.

"Baghdadi and the leaders of the organization are trying to preserve their lives at this stage in preparation for their return," said a researcher at the Washington Institute for Middle East Policy.

"They follow the way that was adopted in Iraq between 2009 and 2012, when the former organization, the Islamic State of Iraq, was tactically defeated by the Sunni tribes and the US military, but managed to hold on to a strategy" until it became an Islamic state.

Iraqi officials believe that the rhythm of al-Baghdadi will not be easy. He lives in complete secrecy surrounded by long-time trusted and trusted members of his clan. He sees no light and uses no modern means of communication, but sends his messages through secret intermediaries.

The region where he is likely to live now is inhabited by Sunni tribes, most of whose members are Salafis, and they have received the organization's fighters as heroes in the face of the Syrian and Iraqi authorities who strongly oppose them.

The organization in its territory will depend on border smuggling, an activity rooted in this desert region that is against any authority other than tribal leaders. In the same area, al-Qaeda has established its most prominent camps after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.
