Breaking News image

Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi has arrived in Mosul to congratulate Iraqi forces for their victory over IS in the city.

Mr Abadi was there to thank "the heroic fighters and the Iraqi people for the great victory," his office said.

Iraqi forces, backed by US-led air strikes, have been battling to retake the city since 17 October last year.

IS seized Mosul in June 2014 before sweeping across much of Iraq's Sunni Arab heartland and proclaiming a "caliphate" straddling Iraq and Syria.

Celebrations broke out among police forces in the city on Saturday as Isis fighters were driven from the city in the final stretch of the nearly nine-month offensive.

The announcement came despite reports that heavy fighting continued in the last Isis strongholds in the city.

The Iraqi prime minister has declared the city of Mosul fully liberated from Islamic State, after the largest urban battle in modern history ended in defeat for the jihadists.

Jubilant soldiers tore down the black flag of Isil, which had flown over Mosul for three years, hoisting up the Iraqi flag in its place.

"The commander in chief of the armed forces Haider al-Abadi arrived in the liberated city of Mosul and congratulated the heroic fighters and the Iraqi people on the achievement of the major victory," the prime minister's office said in a statement.

The nine month-offensive to recapture Iraq’s second city cost the lives of thousands of civilians and countless more Iraqi forces.

In the end, cornered and facing an inevitable conclusion, the last fighters detonated suicide bombs with a few trying to escape across the Tigris river.

The battle for the birthplace of Isil's "caliphate", and one of the terror group's most important territories, had brought fighters from all across the world, including Britain.

Backed by a ferocious aerial bombing campaign by a US-led international coalition, the offensive has turned much of the city to rubble and forced nearly a million people to flee.

The defeat would be the biggest yet for Isil since it seized Mosul in a blitzkrieg offensive in the summer of 2014, sweeping across much of the country's Sunni Arab heartland and proclaimed a caliphate straddling Iraq and Syria.

Thank You, Yota, for Your tireless efforts in bringing all these articles over!!! Hopefully You won't be doing this much (if any) longer!!!

:o   :o   :o

I just found this on twitter regarding a news black out for journalists just prior to the complete victory over ISIS in Mosul. This may be an indication that there could be a news black out in Iraq (or maybe internationally) for reasons other than the complete victory over ISIS in Mosul.

Iraq's state TV says the country's prime minister has arrived in Mosul to declare victory over Isis

Victory reported after eight-month battle

  •

breaking-news.jpg

Iraq’s state television has said the country’s prime minister has arrived in Mosul to declare victory over Isis there after an eight-month battle to drive Isis fighters from the city.

Haider al-Abadi reportedly said he “congratulates the fighters and the people on the big victory” in Mosul.  Militants were being “chased” in some areas of the city, Iraq TV said.

The leader was seen disembarking from a military plane and met by senior security forces commanders.

Iraq began a fight last October to take Mosul back, and was supported by a US-led coalition.

Militants captured the city within days in the summer of 2014, and in 2017 it was one of their last strongholds as the group controlled less than one square kilometer in Mosul's old city.

Heavy fighting is still reportedly underway in the city, however.

Isis has used woman and children as human shields, detonating suicide bombs and firing snipers to keep its grip on the city.

An Iraqi TV station captured the moment that a woman, holding the trigger to a bomb in her right hand and carrying a child, walked past Iraqi troops in Mosul.

The explosives vest under her hijab did not detonate until she had walked past.

More than 20 women suicide bombers have hidden themselves among civilians and detonated explosives over the last two weeks, a sign of militants' desperation.
