That, and unions. It was strikes against packard that forced them to merge with studebaker, and then the uaw killed them too. It was the stifling union demands that caused the big three to invest in overseas manufacturing. Now it's the federal and state workers unions, then add all the other unions, all the trades, fire, police, I believe they are all under the afl/cio, even the seiu. When every city's budget is 80-90% paying for the pensions of past workers, and the current workers have twice the pay and benefits than any private sector, it's freaking time to get those unions in check.
