Exclusive drone footage captures west Mosul in the throes of war

Exclusive drone footage of Mosul emerges 01:41

(CNN)Families carry white flags and sob as they escape from their homes.

A car bomb explodes. Then another. The rotting bodies of ISIS soldiers, abandoned by their units, contaminate the streets.

Children walking through the rubble of what was once their home don't flinch. To them, this is the new normal.
These are scenes from western Mosul as Iraqi forces wage a street-to-street battle to retake the city from ISIS, which the group has controlled for almost three years.

Equipped with a drone and a camera, Brazilian photojournalist Gabriel Chaim spent 20 days embedded with Iraq's Golden Division, capturing harrowing footage of the destruction and the chaos there.
Chaim followed special forces as they moved through the city's narrow, winding streets, searching for signs of ISIS. The unit is the first to clear homes where the militants live among a marooned civilian population.
In the raids, Chaim saw how ISIS fighters navigated through bombed out parts of homes to move around the city unseen, using a labyrinth of destroyed houses in a frightening game of cat and mouse with anti-terrorism units.

Chaim told CNN he had to conceal himself and his equipment to capture some of the scenes from the air, masking the drone's GPS coordinates and data to avoid being tracked.
"When you are flying in the Daesh (ISIS) area you never want to capture yourself -- if they get this drone they could get all your information and position," he told CNN.
"The drone provided me with a different perspective of the war," he said. "It is impossible to get that view of the severe destruction and civilians fleeing from a traditional camera."
Chaim, whose work has taken him to Syria and the Palestinian territories, said the sheer number of civilians caught in the crossfire in Mosul surprised him.
"In Aleppo I have seen civilians in a war zone, but not with heavy armored vehicular tanks and heavy clashes that were fought in the middle of them... it was mostly airstrikes," he said.
"The fact that a huge number of civilians continue to live in neighborhoods that are under heavy clashes is what makes Mosul different."

Chaim said he also saw ISIS propaganda graffiti, in Russian, tagged onto the walls of homes in western Mosul's al Yarmouk neighborhood. Civilians told Chaim that a growing number of Russian-speaking foreign fighters, including Chechens, are bolstering the terror group's ranks in Mosul.
Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, fell to ISIS in June 2014. A US-backed coalition-led offensive to regain control of the city began in October 2016. East Mosul was liberated in January and the second phase -- clearing ISIS militants from the west -- was launched in February.
In western Mosul, 382,000 civilians have fled since February 19 alone. Many of the displaced are housed in emergency refugee camps set up by the Iraqi government and international relief groups. According to recent UN estimates, as many as 800,000 civilians are still living in western Mosul -- with half of them are trapped in the Old City. Leaving the city is not an easy task.

Chaim recalls hundreds of civilians running through the frontlines to escape from ISIS, a scene he said he would never forget.
As they ran for their lives, civilians told him that ISIS screamed insults at the crowd, including the word "kafir," the Arabic word for "non-believer," and fired shots into the moving mass.
"They must take care of how they cross (the frontline), and make sure Daesh won't see them running," Chaim said. "But they also must take care of making sure Iraqi soldiers don't think they are Daesh," he said.
"It's like running from hell."

Peace Out,

ISIL on Verge of Collapse in Northeastern Syria under Heavy Attacks of Kurdish Forces
ISIL on Verge of Collapse in Northeastern Syria under Heavy Attacks of Kurdish Forces

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) continued to hit ISIL's positions in al-Tabaqa city in Western Raqqa and drove the terrorists out of more positions near the group's de facto capital in Syria.

The SDF engaged in heavy fighting with ISIL and managed to take control over a large part of al-Tabaqa city in recent days, forcing the ISIL militants to withdraw from several neighborhoods of the key city.

The Kurdish forces seized control over most of al-Tabaqa’s Northern Industrial Zone, putting them in a position to reach the city center within the next few days.

Abdul Qader Hafideli, one of the field commanders of SDF, said that only 10 percent of al-Tabaqa city is under ISIL's control now, adding that the Kurdish forces will soon take control over the entire city.

Kurdish forces' Spokesman Talal Salou, meantime, said that the SDF fighters have managed to drive ISIL out of another neighborhood in al-Tabaqa called Old City.

According to al-massdar news, if the Industrial Zone of al-Tabaqa falls to the SDF, the ISIL militants inside the city will likely withdraw in order to preserve the lives of the remaining fighters. However, the fall of al-Tabaqa would be devastating for the ISIL, as the city is one of the terrorist group’s last strongholds along the Raqqa-Aleppo Highway.

Once al-Tabaqa falls into SDF hands, the Kurdish fighters will seek to explore pincers en route to Raqqa, the self-proclaimed ISIL capital.

Kurds had established control over all strategic highways leading to ISIL's de facto capital of Raqqa in April.

"We have cut all the strategic ways of supplying ISIL. We have cut the connection with Iraq, freeing the way to Deir Ezzur and have gained control over the Eastern part of the province of Raqqa. With the attack on al-Tabaqa, all the supply routes have been finally cut, we also established control of the roads of Raqqa-Tabaqa and Raqqa-Damascus," Kurdish news agency Firat quoted SDF Spokeswoman Cihan Şêx Ehmed as saying.

She added that the SDF continue their offensive in the Northern part of the Raqqa province.

"Now ISIL cannot replenish its forces and ammunition. They are besieged in Raqqa from four sides," she stressed.

According to SDF data, ISIL militants are retreating to the city of Raqqa and are preparing to conduct battles in the city, while The Kurdish-led forces, in turn, continue to attack the city.

Syrian Democratic Forces started a military Operation 'Euphrates Rage' to take control over Raqqa from ISIL in November 2016.

Relevant reports said on Monday that The SDF forces heavily clashed with ISIL militants in al-Tabaqa city in Western Raqqa, gaining control over the three districts of Bu Issa, Hassou and al-Salam.

They also killed 48 ISIL members and held 5 others captive.

The SDF also seized a large number of weapons, ammunitions and equipment, including 3 tanks, 2 BMP vehicles and several Grad missiles.

Iraqi joint forces supported by Iranian-backed sectarian IMIS Shiite militias have launched a military operation at al-Maleha al-Sahraweyya area located at the borders of Salahuddin and Anbar governorates to oust ISIS terrorists, a security source said on Tuesday.

In a press statement, the source asserted that Iraqi Army's 7th division, Tribal fighter and IMIS militants supported by Iraqi airforces have launched an offensive to oust ISIS terrorists from the al-Maleha al-Sahraweyya area.

In joint forces and IMIS militias' operations many violations against civilians occur, from random mass apprehensions and killings.

On Sunday IMIS militias kidnapped more than 350 young men from al-Hadar town in southwestern Mosul and Hamam al-Alil camp to unknown location, a well informed source said.

These shameful actions come in an endless series of violations and crimes done by IMIS against civilians and displaced citizens.

ISIS may come back with vengeance to Anbar: Officials

May 02 2017 12:49 PM
ISIS may come back to Anbar
ISIS may come back to Anbar

Mostapha Hassan

Local officials in Anbar warned on Tuesday that the terror group will come back to the governorate 'with vengeance'.

The terror group may attack al-Ratba and the areas adjacent to borders with Karbalaa, they added.

These warnings come following the deaths and kidnappings committed against Iraqi army officers of the 1st Division last week.

They were ambushed by ISIS terrorists on the road linking between Ratba and Ramadi.

This attack disclosed that there is a security loophole caused by the lack of air cover-up for an area extending for 400 KMs.

For this, head of the security committee of Anbar provincial council Ragea al-Essawi said that 'ISIS terrorists may come back with vengeance to the liberated cities'.

If the status quo continues, the ISIS terrorists will attack not only Ratba, but also Ameryat al-Fallujah, Rahalia, and al-Rawda near Karbalaa.

Also, Adel Al-Mahallawi, an Anbar lawmaker, said that the local officials in the province warned the government against concentrating their efforts in Mosul and leaving Anbar.

KRG Submits Evidence on IS' Use of Chemical Weapon to Coalition

ERBIL — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has gathered evidence proving the use of chemical weapons by the Islamic State (IS) against the Kurdish forces, and submitted them to the international coalition fighting the extremist group, an official said.

“There is still a possibility that the Daesh militants once again use chemical weapons as their activities in the areas under their control have not been watched by the international actors and the UN,” said Dindar Zebari, head of KRG’s Committee for Monitoring and Responding to International Reports.

The extremist group, since it overrun Mosul in Iraq back in 2014, has several times used chemical weapons against Peshmerga and Iraqi forces as well as civilians. Kurdish Peshmerga commanders previously warned about the group's technical capacity to develop rockets carrying poisonous agents.

Earlier in April, Russia called on the United States to share information on alleged chemical weapons used by Islamic State (IS) in Kurdistan Region.
