Iraqi Troops Begin Push into Last IS-held District in Mosul

MOSUL — Iraqi Counter Terrorism and Federal police forces started push into Old City neighbourhood, the last district held by the Islamic State (IS) in West Mosul.

Iraqi military says the troops launched early Sunday an assault on Mosul's Old City, where they are engaged in fierce clashes with the remaining militants in the area.

The security forces are advancing on the district from the west and federal police are on the southern front, according to the Iraqi military’s statement.

More than 100,000 Iraqi civilians remain trapped in the Old city, after nearly nine months of military operation against the extremist group, the United Nations refugee agency said on Friday.

Over 11,000 Yezidi IDP Families Returned Home: Official

SINJAR — A total of 11,025 Kurdish Yezidi families, which were displaced by the Islamic State (IS), have now returned to their homes in different areas of Sinjar Region, said Mayor Mahma Khalil.

“At least 600 families from central Sinjar are among those who have recently returned,” Khalil told BasNews, noting that 50 to 100 Yezidi families are leaving the IDP camps on daily basis.

He renewed a call on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the international community to step up the reconstruction efforts in the liberated Yezidi areas in hopes of facilitating the return of the IDPs.

The official further criticised the Iraqi federal government for failing to provide any assistance to the Yezidis, pointing out that all the aid is delivered by the KRG and a number of international NGOs.

The plan to storm districts of Mosul's Old City is complete, Commanders and officers in Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) confirmed on Sunday, noting that the forces are waiting for orders to enter these districts and liberate besieged residents.

In a televised interview, Lieutenant-General Abdul Ghani al-Assadi, commander of CTS forces, said that Old City's districts in Mosul's right bank have been divided into four sections to ease the process of recapturing them from ISIS terrorists.

CTS forces are stationed near the Fifth Bridge in Mosul's right bank, local sources told The Baghdad Post, adding that they are now on the outskirts of the district.

Earlier this morning, it was reported that CTS forces and Federal Police's third Brigade have begun to storm the Old City.

Security forces, backed by International Coalition air raids and logistic support of the US army, have retaken eastern Mosul and most of its western part after eight months of battles. These forces are focusing now on controlling the Old City's districts.

It is estimated that there are a few of ISIS terrorists left in the second largest city of Iraq. It is expected that they will desperately defend the last pocket of the city that has been once their main stronghold in Iraq.

Police ban face veil to guard Iraq’s post-IS Mosul

Iraqi women walk freely around a street market in Mosul, their hair wrapped in brightly coloured scarves and face uncovered after police banned the conservative black veil mandatory under jihadist rule.

Iraqi forces, who have retaken eastern Mosul from the Islamic State group after three years of jihadist rule, have banned the face veil as part of a package of measures to curb jihadist attacks in the area.

They decided on the ban after having detained several IS fighters who had dressed up as women, concealing their faces behind the black material.

Iraqi forces seized the eastern half of Mosul in January, and are now battling to retake the last western neighbourhoods from the jihadist group.

Traditionally in Mosul, women wear what they like at home but don a long robe and cover their hair in the street.

https://www.newswyre.com/topic/police-ban-face-veil-to-guard-iraqs-post-is-mosul/

Banning these black veils should be banned everywhere in public and the long black robe also. Less chance of hiding a rifle under them. I can't believe here in the USA they allow the women to have a driver licence picture with the veils on!! We sure do some real stupid things. But they should make a law the women can't be punished for not wearing them out in public.

IS Sends Women to Frontlines to Fight Iraqi Forces in Mosul

IS Sends Women to Frontlines to Fight Iraqi Forces in Mosul

MOSUL — The so-called Islamic State (IS) sends women to fight the Iraqi forces in the western parts of Mosul, where the extremist group is surrounded from all sides.

Female fighters and suicide bombers are becoming increasingly common on the frontlines in west Mosul, according to the Iraqi forces, who have liberated the majority of the western areas and are currently battling the IS militants in Mosul's Old City district, which is the last district held by the extremists.

According to Saif Saad, a sergeant for the Iraqi Special Operations Forces (ISOF), the IS insurgents are surrounded from all sides and have nowhere to escape, which has forced them to send women to the frontlines, in desperate hope of pushing away the Iraqi forces.

Saad added that the Iraqi troops expect more women to be used as suicide bombers once the forces enter the Old City. He explained that the female militants use Kalashnikovs and sniper rifles, and blow themselves up if they run out of ammunitions.

The extremist group has further started using female combatants in online propaganda videos, showing them wearing combat clothes and holding weapons. Until recently, women were being kept away from the frontline, but as a result of the increasing pressure from the Iraqi forces, some women have started fighting alongside men, whereas others try and make it through the Iraqi lines with the civilians escaping the battle, fully covered in burqas, in order to hide the explosives attached to their bodies.

"Iraqi Govt Sent Thousands of Tons of Medicine to IS"

"Iraqi Govt Sent Thousands of Tons of Medicine to IS"

ERBIL— In a video footage a member of Iraqi security forces accuses the government of sending thousands of tons of medicine to the Islamic State (IS) organization.

The source says the loads which were recently confiscated from a hospital in Sinjar Gate were purchased by the Ministry of Health.

The medicine is new, the product of August 2016.

The source says while the Iraqi hospitals suffer from lack of medicine, "thousands of tons of medicine are being transferred to the Islamic jihadists."

The source adds as the Iraqi government used to send the pensions of the people in the IS-held Mosul for the past three years, this transfer of medicine to IS held areas of Nineveh should not come as a surprise.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:45 P.M.) – The Iraqi Army, alongside the federal police, began an important operation, Sunday, to clear the last district under the control of the Islamic State (ISIL) in Mosul.

With the Islamic State completely surrounded in the Old Mosul District, the Iraqi forces gave the terrorist group one last chance to surrender last night; however, this was ignored.

Under the instructions of the Iraqi Joint Command, the army and federal police began shelling the Old Mosul District in order to weaken the Islamic State’s resolve before storming the area.

Once Old Mosul is liberated, the Iraqi Armed Forces will have full control of Mosul City for the first time since the summer of 2014.
