Intense clashes were ongoing till noon on Saturday, before Iraqi Army and allies stopped the advance to establish and fortify defensive positions in the liberated villages and their surroundings.

Iraqi Army captures half of ISIS pocket in Mosul in just 24 hours

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (11:00 P.M.) – After a week-long hiatus to evacuate civilians through humanitarian corridors, the Iraqi Armed Forces resumed their military operations around the last three ISIS-held neighborhoods in Mosul.

Led by the Rapid Response Division, 9th Division and Counter Terrorism Units, government forces finally managed to impose full control over the Al-Zinjili neighborhood amid deadly door-to-door combat and a ferocious battle with ISIS insurgents on Saturday.

Advancing southwards along the Tigris River, the Iraqi Army also took control of roughly 75% of the Al-Shafaa district which neighbors the largely ISIS-held Old City, a densely populated residential area which has been held in check by the Iraqi Federal Police for months.

With barely two suburbs under Islamic State control, the battle for Iraq’s second largest city is expected to come to an end within a fortnight. Nevertheless, a couple hundred exhausted jihadist fighters appear determined to fight to the bitter end.

Islamic State Attacks Abroad Likely to Increase

Shoguna B. Sobir

Islamic State Attacks Abroad Likely to Increase

ISTANBUL — Countering statements by US military officials who correlated the reduction of Islamic State (IS) attacks with the continued losses its territories in Syria and Iraq, analysts are saying that IS attacks will likely increase.

"As perverse as it sounds, the ISIS [IS] brand and its violent ideology still resonates strongly with a global following not deterred by its battlefield losses," said Martin Reardon, a Marine Corps and FBI veteran, as quoted US News & World Report.

However, earlier US Army Colonel Ryan Dillon, who is a spokesman for the US-led  anti-IS coalition, said that weakening of the IS in Iraq and Syria will reduce its ability to carry out attacks elsewhere.

"We are degrading their ability not just to conduct just battlefield operations but to plan, inspire and direct terror attacks," said Dillion.

Nevertheless, their losses in Syria and Iraq have not curtailed attacks abroad, of which there were a number in the past multiple days.

"Their messaging is still very popular," according to Otso Iho, a senior analyst with the London-based Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre. "We haven't seen a huge amount of signs suggesting that ISIS has lost that stature of a household brand yet."

The recent increased frequency of attacks Iho equates with a "substantial increase in the pool of potential attackers.”

"If Raqqa, say, falls in five months, that doesn't spell the end of ISIS," Iho noted, adding that "that doesn't spell the end of its influence, particularly as we see foreign fighters leave Iraq and Syria, and some of whom will be able to embed themselves in local networks in Europe."

The US Director of National Intelligence seems to share this doubt about the future reduction in IS attacks.

"ISIS is unlikely to announce that it is ending its self-declared caliphate even if it loses overt control of its de facto capitals in Mosul, Iraq and Ar Raqqah, Syria and the majority of the populated areas it once controlled in Iraq and Syria," the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a report titled Worldwide Threat Assessment of the US Intelligence Community released earlier in May.

"The number of ISIS foreign fighters leaving Iraq and Syria might increase," it stated, adding that the "increasing departures would very likely prompt additional would-be fighters to look for new battlefields or return to their home countries to conduct or support external operations."

IS Mortar Attack Kills Eight Civilians in Western Mosul

SOFIA — Eight civilians were killed whereas five others were injured as several mortar missiles were launched by the so-called Islamic State (IS) in western Mosul, a source from the Iraqi federal police said on Saturday.

Captain Adel Haider told BasNews that eight civilians were killed, while five others were injured, as a result of an IS mortar missiles attack against the district of al-Zanjili district. According to Haider, the IS militants started targeting the area of Zanjili after the Iraqi forces pushed the extremist group out of al-Shifa district and the Grand Nuri al-Kabeer mosque.

Colonel Khaled al-Jawari, from the Joint Operations Command, said that a weapon stash was found, while civilians held by the IS militants in al-Shifa were liberated earlier on Saturday. The troops from the Rapid Response seized a huge weapon stash with dozens of mortar missiles, as well as locally-manufactured rockets and other explosives, belonging to the extremists.

The Iraqi forces liberated the district of Zanjili in western Mosul, which is leaving the IS militants with only one remaining district in the city, as the Iraqi forces are close to liberating entire Mosul.

Iraq's military continues its push deep into the remaining neighborhoods that are still under ISIS' control in western Mosul as the terrorist group is no longer in control of western Mosul except inside the Old City and parts of the al-Shifaa neighborhood, a military source said on Sunday.

The government forces have recaptured most of western Mosul's districts months after the battle to liberate the city began, backed by US-led Coalition.

The source said that the Iraqi forces continue incursion into al-Shifaa neighborhood while the army's explosive disposal team was clearing landmines, booby traps and ISIS' explosive remnants in al-Zanjili district as well as saving stranded families.

This comes as Iraqi forces announced on Saturday the full recapture of al-Zanjili district, located in Mosul's Old City.

These efforts come as part of an offensive launched on 19th of February by US-backed security forces, supported by Iranian-backed sectarian IMIS Shiite militias to oust ISIS terrorists from Mosul, their last major stronghold in Iraq.

News outlets close to the Iranian army have released photos of Hashd al-Shaabi militia training children on weapons to prepare them for the fight against IS.

According Jame Jam Online, an Iranian website, the children were being prepared for the operation to retake Jurf al-Sakher town, 60 kilometers southwest of Baghdad, located in Babil province.

The United Nations organisations have repeatedly warned against recruiting children in the armed groups in Iraq. The UN’s reports have recorded cases of using children as soldiers by Islamic State (IS), Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Shi'ite militia of Hashd al-Shaabi.

Hashd al-Shaabi was formed in 2014 by a religious jurisdiction from the grand Shi’ite scholar Ayatollah Ali Sistani to fight the IS militants.
