King Bean
Liquor Shops Reopening in IS-Free Mosul Basnews English 20/05/2017 - 15:59 A Mosul resident forks out to buy booze after years of it being banned by ISIS. Photo: Getty Images MOSUL — Alcohol is once again being sold in Iraq’s Mosul, which was banned under Islamic State (IS) rule over the area since 2014. Reportedly, in IS-controlled Mosul, those who partook in drinking in public were whipped and those who smuggled alcoholic beverages were given the death sentence. However, as IS militants are continually being driven out of Mosul, more and more shops are starting to sell spirits. A retailer in the area is currently serving approximately 1,000 customers on a daily basis. “In the afternoon it gets very busy here. For three years, people were deprived of it yet they had been used to it before. There used to be bars, clubs and casinos. All of them were closed and only now are people returning to drinking,” said a retailer by the name of Abu Haidar, as quoted by The Sun. Today, a 25 cl of alcohol costs less than $7, - approximating the pre-2014 year prices, whereas proceeding the IS takeover the cost for the same amount was around fifteen times higher. “I feel so relieved – there were a few illegal stores recently and people selling from their homes, but this is a proper licensed shop so it’s cheaper and we want it cheaper,” said Mosul resident Karim Jassem, who also spoke of his past experiences in drinking under IS-controlled Mosul. “I was afraid. I would drink and by 11pm leave my friend’s house and drive home using the back streets,” he said. Eastern Mosul was declared liberated in January. The operation is currently in progress in the western side of the city. The operation, which was launched on October of 2016, is led by the Iraqi forces in conjunction with the US-led international coalition forces. http://www.basnews.com/index.php/en/news/iraq/351722
