Jabour slams plots to divide Iraq into mini-states

Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri on Wednesday slammed attempts to divide Iraq into several mini-states as unacceptable.

"Dividing Iraq into mini-states is unacceptable, who seek to live outside of the mainframe of this country must search for another place to call home," Jabouri said.

Al-Jabouri added in a speech in a Turkman conference in Baghdad that he is not against any constitutional rights, "but, we must put in perspective Iraq's interest above anything else."

Those who propagate these schemes seek to turn Iraq into mini-states under the rule of the "region's wolves", he said.

"We won't give up any inch of our country for the sake of foreign schemes at any cost," he asserted.

ISTANBUL — Dividing Iraq will render the resulting states weaker, the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament Salim al-Jibouri said during Turkman's Conference in Baghdad on Wednesday.

"Hiding behind the constitution to turn Iraq into small states living under the mercy of the wolves of the region is not allowed,” stressed al-Jibouri, as quoted by Kurdistan24. 

Al-Jibouri’s statements were made in reference to the recent announcements by Kurdistan Region officials regarding their plan to hold a referendum on Kurdish independence from greater Iraq.

Of foremost importance is maintaining the territorial integrity of the country, he emphasized, adding that any attempt to divide Iraq’s territory is impermissible and as it is likely to weaken the position of all the parties involved, the idea of division must be foreign-born.

"We will consider country’s highest interests and its unity against any dissonant project harmful to the country and we will defend its unity with all our strength,” al-Jibouri remarked.

“No one will be allowed to use the ideas of fragmentation, division, and dismantling [of Iraq] under any circumstance. Iraq will not be torn apart," al-Jibouri continued, adding that “we will not give up an inch of the land of Iraq in favor of aggressive foreign projects.”

"Those who want to live outside of this state [Iraq] shall seek life in another country," Jibouri concluded.

Jan Kubis, head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Ammar al-Hakim, as well as the head of the Iraqi Shi’ite National Alliance and representative of Turkmen parties were also in attendance.

This coming from a guy who is a party with the muslim brotherhood. He should look at the constitution more often. It explicitly states that any province may become a region of their own, and they are still part of the country of iraq. What no one seems to want here is for the provinces to have their powers and their own say so and laws to run their own areas just as we do here in the u.s. They are also suppose to be allowed to run their own security so that way there is no sectarianism.

He said the parliament speaker, that the war on the terrorist organization Daesh come to an end and that the next phase requires everyone to work in a team spirit in order to prepare a clear plan for the next stage and to serve the interests of citizens.
For his part, praised the Iraqi Awakening Conference on the role of the Speaker of the House and its contribution to the enactment of several laws that reflect positively on the lives of citizens.

Iraqi parliament speaker tells those wanting to ‘divide’ Iraq to seek life in exile.

The speaker of the Iraqi parliament has said that they are standing in full force against any project that seeks to turn Iraq into “small states” telling people who want to do so should seek life elsewhere.

“Iraq is one and will not be divided and anyone who seeks life outside this country should start looking for another country,” Salim al-Jabouri said in a conference in Baghdad held for Iraqi Turkmens and attended by other Iraqi politicians including Ammar al-Hakim, the head of the ruling Shiite National Alliance.
