BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:40 P.M.) – NATO will not enter the six year long Syrian conflict in any military capacity, the Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stated during talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday.

“If NATO joins the coalition, it will not change the role of NATO. We will continue to provide support, we will continue to focus on training. NATO will not be engaged in combat operations,” he said.

Merkel voiced the certainty that a final decision on that issue would be made at NATO’s summit in Brussels on May 25.

“We are in talks over whether NATO should officially become part of the coalition. These consultations are going on. I promised to the secretary-general we will continue them. We hope to be finished by May 25,” she said.

For the time being NATO provides intelligence information for the coalition from its AWACS planes and trains Iraq’s security forces.

NATO's entire mission standards need to be revisited . . . The Global situation has changed dramatically while NATO has not. Not withstanding the fact many NATO member nations aren't paying their Bills !

In or Out - it's make your mind up time and formulate a proper strategy for combating todays threats . . . as usual ( the NEW ) USA is now up to the task while the rest of the world tries to figure out a way to catch up.

We'll just carry on while the NATO member nations Bureaucrats put their heads together . . . more on this breaking story in about 10 to 15 years.

Merkel needs to remove her head from her warm and cozy robust derriere so she can finally see the light. Her mistake of allowing untold numbers of refugees into her country has caused the people of Germany unbearable misery, rape, and death. Nations made up of people will act like people. As long as they can reap the rewards and have to pay none of the dues they are happy. When the reaper finally comes to collect, where then will they be? Cowering like the people they truly are. NATO is and always be a precursor to the EU, socialist marxist imbeciles believing they world owes them their fair share all the while being the greedy fascists in which they return nothing in their cozy make-believe worlds in which they will dictate to you how you will live, eat, breathe and even poop.

That reminds me of a funny story. At the time of their so-called prophet, when he would squat to release that which was in his bowels, he cleaned himself with three rocks. Whenever a muslim enters a toilet facility they must do so with their left leg. Never shake the left hand of a muslim (and some asians and Indians, from India) for sanitary reasons. That last statement is not racist at all, its good common sense if you know the culture.

NATO leaders are considering playing a larger role in Iraq, where the alliance recently deployed a small training mission to work with Iraqi forces,  Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Wednesday after a meeting with NATO’s military leaders

“There is general agreement that NATO can and should do more,” Pavel said according to USA Today.

Dunford said the alliance may be in a position to provide long-term assistance to Iraq’s security forces once the militants have been driven from Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, and the level of violence has been reduced.

Any decision, however, would have to wait until Iraq’s government makes a formal request for continued support for its military, Dunford said.

“This is a global trans-regional threat,” Dunford said of terror groups. “We need a global trans-regional network” to combat it. "NATO  is an important part of that network.”

France, Germany resist U.S. plan for bigger NATO role against Islamic State

Brussels (Reuters) France and Germany are resisting a plan by U.S. officials for NATO to take a bigger role in the fight against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, in line with calls from President Donald Trump for the alliance to do more to combat terrorism.

Many alliance members hope the plan will be announced in Brussels next Thursday, when Trump attends his first NATO summit. But France and Germany have misgivings, allies involved in the discussions said.

Among the concerns: NATO might be caught up in another costly, Afghan-style deployment, irk some Arab countries or risk confrontation with Russia in Syria.

“They are not buying it,” said a senior European NATO diplomat, who said some other nations including Greece and Italy were also wary of the plan.

“They want to know what difference would it make. All 28 NATO allies are already part of this effort,” the diplomat said, referring to a 68-nation U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State that includes all NATO members.

French and German officials declined to comment, but German Chancellor Angela Merkel left open the possibility of NATO as an institution joining the coalition when she met NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg last week. Both ruled out any combat role for NATO in Syria and Iraq.

France’s new President Emmanuel Macron will have lunch with Trump – who last month withdrew his earlier charge that NATO was ‘obsolete’ because it was not ‘taking care of terror’ – before the Brussels meeting next Thursday.

While Islamic State is on the verge of defeat in its Iraqi stronghold of Mosul, and bracing for an assault against its de facto capital in Raqqa, Syria, U.S. officials are concerned fleeing militants could leave a vacuum that could prompt Arab tribal fighters to turn on each other to gain control.

U.S. officials say the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation as an institution could contribute equipment, training and the expertise it gained leading a coalition against al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. NATO military chiefs favour the move, said General Petr Pavel, chairman of the alliance’s military committee.

Diplomats said this could mean NATO using its surveillance planes over Syria, running command-and-control operations and providing air-to-air refuelling.

SYMBOLIC STEP

One compromise would be for NATO as an institution to formally join the coalition at the dinner with Trump next week, but leave the details of any involvement to a later stage.

“If allies can be convinced that it is only a symbolic step, a deal should be possible,” said a second NATO diplomat. “Trump goes home with a message that NATO is joining the coalition and NATO doesn’t have to do anything extra, at least for now.”

A broader hesitancy among European allies stems from the long mission that NATO has undertaken in Afghanistan, taking over the United States’ bid to defeat militants in 2003 after the attacks on New York and Washington two years earlier.

Given Russia’s concerns over NATO expansion in eastern Europe, and its role in Syria as the key military ally of President Bashar al-Assad, some allies also worry that deeper NATO involvement there could be taken by Moscow as a provocation.

But a stronger role in Iraq and Syria could also address concerns expressed by Mediterranean allies, such as Spain, Italy and Portugal, that NATO lacks a strategy for tackling the root causes of the migrant and refugee crisis.

Stoltenberg has talked about NATO’s “untapped potential” in building up armed forces. Options include more NATO training of Iraqi troops and police, as well as strengthening government departments in areas taken back from Islamic State.

“NATO is the only security organization with the skills and breadth to take on this task,” wrote Hans Binnendijk and David Gompert in a paper for the U.S. think-tank RAND Corporation.

NATO to join Anti-ISIL Coalition: AFP

BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:10 P.M.) – NATO will join the U.S. Coalition against the Islamic State (ISIL) forces in Iraq and Syria, the AFP News Agency reported, Wednesday, citing diplomatic sources.

This move by NATO comes just hours after U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, stated he expects the organization to join this coalition despite some reservations by member-states.

“The NATO (member state) ambassadors decided this evening an action plan on terrorism for the summit. It includes the accession of NATO to the global coalition against IS,” one diplomat said, as quoted by the AFP.

“This means that the AWACS will not just do airspace surveillance but airspace management,” the AFP quoted a diplomat saying, asking not to be identified.

“They are going to coordinate the flights and direct airplanes over Syria and Iraq but only for flights which are not related to bombings.”

NATO leaders will formally endorse the decision at Thursday’s summit, the AFP added.

NATO is set to join the US-led coalition against Daesh, diplomatic sources say.

In a show of “unity”, following the Manchester suicide attack claimed by Daesh, member states of the military alliance are expected to formally join a US-led coalition in Iraq and Syria.

The decision by the North Atlantic Council, the highest decision-making body within NATO, is expected to be officially announced at a meeting today.

One diplomatic source reported by Al Jazeera said: “The NATO ambassadors decided this evening an action plan on terrorism for the summit. It includes the accession of NATO to the global coalition against IS [Daesh].”

With many of the 28 member states already taking part individually as part of the coalition, the decision to join is said to be mainly political.

Diplomats said France and Germany will agree to the US plan, but insist the move is purely symbolic.

“NATO as an institution will join the coalition,” one senior diplomat involved in the discussions told the Reuters news agency. “The question is whether this is just a symbolic gesture to the United States. France and Germany believe it is.”

Earlier yesterday, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said he expected NATO to join despite reservations by some members states which are fearful of getting dragged into another conflict.

Tillerson said that NATO’s joining “would be a really important step” but that “there are a couple of countries that are still thinking it over.”

“I have had meetings actually with one of those. I think they’re going to support NATO joining and becoming a member of the ISIS [Daesh] fight,” he told reporters travelling with Trump.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said earlier that “many allies would like to see NATO as a full member of the coalition … because it sends a strong message of unity”.

He added that in light of Monday’s attack in Manchester, “it is important to send this message of unity against terrorism”.

Stoltenberg had previously stressed that there has been “no discussion at all of engaging NATO in a combat role” if it officially joins the coalition.

Ah so after the majority of fighting is done, NATO sweeps in and claims victory. Yep just like the libtards to lay claim to something they did not do. Remember zero's, to successful companies, "you did not build that,  although you did all of the hard work and spent many many late night hours on building it up, the government built it". NATO is going to say well we joined and see what we did, we destroyed Daesh for you. No need for thanks but give us lots of money so our leaders can get even fatter on the backs of the people.
